  1. Draconis March

My rating is based on multiple factors, all of which will be described in detail.Controls: 5 starsThe controls are very innovative and unique. It’s fun to aim the Wiimote like it’s actually Samus’ arm cannon; and even more fun to use the nunchuck like a lasso when using the Grapple Beam.Graphics: 5 starsThe greaphics in this game are nothing short of amazing. It takes full advantage of the Wii’s capabilities. The details, particle effects, and the like are beautiful.Plot: 3.5 starsFor those of you that like a good storyline, Corruption might as well not even have one. These games have nothing to do with each other except for the Space Pirates, the Galactic Federation, and Dark Samus. The plot of this game itself is actually decent, but considering the fact that it has almost nothing to do with its predecessors is disappointing.Comparatively: 3This one falls short of its predecessors. The bosses and puzzles are MUCH better and harder in 1 and 2 than in 3. In 1, I died a few times. In 2, I died a bunch. In 3, I didn’t die once. The Wii controls vastly impair your previous ability to have 4 missile types, 4 visor types, and 4 beam types all at the same time. In this one, you only get ONE of each at any given time. In addition, 2 was going in the right direction with multiplayer. This one could easily have had an improved version like that one.Overall, 4. This game is amazing and worth the money, but don’t expect it to be just like the first 2.

Recently I found a very good deal on Corruption, so I thought I would give the game a try. This is the first Metroid game in the Prime series I have played, and I have to say that I am sorry I passed on an opportunity to buy the Metroid Prime Trilogy when it was on sale for $30 (the game is now out of print and a used version goes for at least $70). I have to admit this is one of the most enjoyable games I have played in a really long time. I am roughly a third of the way through the game, and I am hooked. This game feels epic. Every world, character, and prop, and piece of architecture is beautifully created. Retro Studios really pushed the hardware of the Wii to its limit. Artists will tell you that form is the first and most important aspect of design- especially in video games- and the artists of this game went above and beyond in creating a very unique and memorable universe. Yes there are more realistic looking games out there on more advanced systems with higher polygon counts and high-def textures, but on a design aspect Corruption puts most games (including games that came out five years later) to shame. Nothing in this game feels stale and every room feels like there is some history behind it. Stills of this game do not do the graphics justice. The sounds in this game are also first rate, and the music feels very much like a Metroid game. Initially the controls do take some getting used (mostly the button layout), but after a couple hours of play I found.

I had played the original versions of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes for the Gamecube, and while I enjoyed them, it took quite a long time for me to get used to the controls. Now Retro Studios brings us what may be one the best games for the Nintendo Wii console. Its controls are superb, its atmosphere is top-notch, and as usual, the gameplay is classic Metroid, just the way I like it!
