Spirits & Spells

Spirits & Spells is a magical adventure across spooky environments. Lead characters Alicia and Greg explore their 3D surroundings by jumping across platforms and solving puzzles. However, players are challenge to collect sparks, enabling them to freely switch between the two children to take advantage of their distinct abilities. A Halloween theme pervades the action, as both characters find themselves transform into their costumes (Ann as a witch, Greg as a devil) and must venture through a haunted house, cemetery, dark forest, and secret laboratory before finding their way back home.

This game is publish by DreamCatcher Interactive Inc., Wanadoo edition. And develop by Wanadoo edition
release in Sep, 2003 for PlayStation 2.

Description

In Spirits and Spells the player takes the role of the two kids Alicia and Greg who visit a spooky old house with their friends. Unfortunately the Bogeyman steals the souls of their friends and turns them into stone. Of course the two heroes have to get them back. So they visit the Land of Dead and have to survive a cemetery, a haunted house and the lab of a mad scientist.

However, the player can switch instantly (but limited because it costs crystals which can be found in the levels) between the two characters which is often require to progress in the game. Also both have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Alicia is disguise as a witch, is invulnerable to ice and can shrink herself. Greg on the other hand is the master of fire, is disguise as imp and has a super jump. Moreover, both have the same basic fighting abilities: hitting an enemy or jumping on their head kills them. But the same goes for the two kids which die with the first hit. Besides the fighting the game consists of platforming and simple puzzles. The game is in 3D but there is one linear path to follow (with a few junctions).

I played the game several times and had to finally give up on it. My boy, however has been playing it for the last week non-stop. I’ll hear him in his room screaming at the screen but he keeps at it. When I tell him that he should put it away and try another game he has, he just looks at me and says, “But i like it.”It may be aggravating to those of us with years of gaming experience, but the younger set seems to like it. I did enjoy it the first two levels, then my patience wore thin.Oh, by the way, the ratings are based on how my son feels. I’d probably give it a two star all way around.
