This is a nicely packaged box set, cool art, whatever. BUT. There’s no episode list anywhere on the box, on the discs, in the package – nothing. I don’t know if this would be a problem with every dvd player or not, but when we had to stop an episode and come back later, the dvd would not “play all” on that disc, so the disc would end….or so we thought, and then we’d pop the next one in and see “previously on” snippets we had never seen before. This happened every time we had to stop a disc. If we let it play straight through, there was no problem, but maybe double check the main menu for “more” and “more” again, to make sure you got them all!

I’ll save any details about the series but just want to say that every other 5 star review you’ve read about this series for the story, animation, music, and voice acting all being excellent is completely correct. This series has stood up to time really well and the ability to buy it on Blu-Ray now is a really special treat. It’s wonderful for kids and adults alike, and the writing in this show is really fantastic. It has excellent pacing and the character development feels genuine and well-paced and not forced in any way at all.I find that season 1 is definitely the slowest feeling overall but for first time viewers it’s quite important to watch the whole thing in order to best understand and appreciate the overarching story. Even though season 1 can be a bit slow at times the show gets progressively better and better – especially from the second half of season 2 onward. Some episodes definitely stand out more than others but they’re all really just fantastic.110% would recommend this show to anyone. Blessings!PS – for those who don’t know, the series “The Legend of Korra” was the sequel to this show. In my opinion, it’s not as good as this one by any means, but it’s still decent and worth picking up if you enjoyed this show.

I don’t really understand how to review a dvd box set. So I’ll just tell you about Avatar. This was a gift to my niece. As she grew up we watched it together always. At this point, it’s practically a collectors item. This series in an original American animated odyssey that can easily answer to any authentic Japanese anime. It captures enough of the otherworldly mystic ability but the characters could easily be people you know. It’s American heart with Japanese style. There are always unanswered questions. Especially with me. But this series from start to finish is about family, including the family that you don’t share DNA with. But the people in your life who you matter to. And who matter to you. There’s the wisdom of the ages, from one of the greatest characters, who unfortunately passed before finishing the last season. And so distinct and wise was his voice, that his character didn’t say very much after. And he will never be forgotten to any fan who watched because we all wished that he was our uncle. But what he was a part of before he left this world, was no cartoon. It was a work of art. And he played it brilliantly. Yes. There was air bending and fire bending, earth bending and water bending. It was really about growing up and that journey into self discovery. Not from one character. But from almost all of them. Results varied. But the best part is that we are dropped into the middle of a story. A world we don’t know. Geographically it could be earth? But we.

Loved the show when I had first watched it so got it for my kids for Christmas. It came in a simple bubble mailer and when I removed the shrink wrap I noticed that the case for the discs was extremely damaged. I kept the item and ordered a replacement case because all of the discs work perfectly but the item was in packaging that was not protective enough.Sadly not the first time I have had this same thing happen for other orders of various DVDs and software cases damaged when sent in bubble mailers. The positive side is most of the time the discs have been undamaged. Bubble mailers don’t seem safe enough for the rough way these seem to be treated during shipping and I wish suppliers would stop using them for these kind of items. Also wish retrolio had the packaging review option like once did but don’t seem to anymore.Simply put, beware that the item might get damaged during shipping and it is up to you to decide to get a new case or return it.

EDIT: The Blu-Ray version took care of the image quality on the episodes and it now has subtitles, but the featurettes are in a weird format. So I’m adding a star from 3 to 4.Below is my original comment on the DVD:—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–Thank you Ashley for the screenshots of the bad image quality. This applies to the first disc of season 1 (episodes 101 to 104 and the Kung Fu featurette). The other discs are ok.I’m dismayed by the lack of subtitles. If I hadn’t turned on subtitles on Prime (I watched when it was free for members), I would have missed one of the most important scenes in the series. The voice of the lion turtle in episode 319 is so low that I would have missed the crucial spiritual insight that completes Aang’s development. That theme is reprised multiple times in The Legend of Korra. You can google a transcript to get the text.Of course the content is great. Along with Korra, this is my favorite animated series.

This show is amazing. Flat-out awesome. As the characters grow and develop during the run of the plot, it makes for one of the best children’s shows of the 2000’s (considered a dark age in the genre of American cartoons) and is pretty enjoyable for all ages. The first half of Book 1 really drags a bit (noticed this after my second trek through the series), but is necessary due to the world building/framing. After that, the series goes up, up, and up from there and never comes down.As far as this Complete Series boxset is concerned…..it’s pretty much the three individual seasons/books releases (2006, 2007, 2008) with less impressive concept art and a simple compact boxset to hold all three together. Visually, it’s an unimpressive casing compared to simply buying all three seasons separately. Beyond this superficial comment, the *real* downside to the quality of this set (and the individual set editions before it) is that Book 1: Water, Disc 1 has AWFUL image quality/display properties. You heard me right, if you are having this problem, your copy isn’t bad…..they all are. All animation stills are blurry with a choppy quality that seems to be the result of a terrible digital scan during creation. Again, the problem is….it’s on ALL copies of this show’s release and they are bad from the "production factory" core. There is no avoiding it and frankly, the only way you are going to get a better quality picture, is to find one of the many illegal cartoon stre.

Long ago, my Last Airbender DVDs were used in harmony. But then, everything changed when the Blu-Ray came in a pack.Only my bank account, master of all my expenses could stop me.But when I needed it most, it was empty.A couple weeks passed and I discovered a new bank account.Actually the same one, but I got paid. And although it’s initial status was great, I had a lot to earn before my expenses were done. But I believed, I would give it a whirl!(So I bought it and it’s amazing)

This Blu Ray set is the best the show has ever looked, no question. I appreciate the original aspect ratio being preserved instead of it being stretched out to 16:9. There are some issues with the picture, though. Large fields of solid color or certain visual effects show a lot of noise in the picture. I remember first noticing it in the Book 1 episode The King of Omashu, but it is most obvious during the Book 1 finale. There’s a part where most of the screen is covered with a red color effect. Everything affected by this has a digital fuzziness to it. This is less of an issue in the other two seasons but it’s sill there. Maybe something to fix with a remaster later on?There’s a ton of special features and commentaries, though they are all from previous releases. It’s a real shame that the Avatar Extras pop up facts weren’t included. I’d have been happy even if they had included them as an extra subtitle track. I also wish they had taken this opportunity to create some new special features or interviews or something, especially since this is the 10 year anniversary of the series finale. Some people have reported that there’s been a few cuts in the show. Nothing too significant, just a few seconds of footage. Apparently the Book 2 episode The Chase has some content missing. I can’t say if this is true or not myself, but it might be something to keep in mind.Overall, I can’t think of a better way to watch the show, but I can’t help but feel like this could have been even better.

Compared to DVD quality w/ 2.0 stereo AND upscaled 720p w/ 5.1 surround (a very impressive upscale), and the luray is easily the best quality for the series thus far. I do wish there was an option for surround (hence the fifth star absent), but thankfully audio gear and speakers both have a matrix for creating a virtual 5.1 without any issue. Still, if the audio was remastered with modern tech in mind, it’d be a perfect set. Still, for this price ($30), this is easily the definition of MUST-HAVE amongst all the options. Especially compared to the recent Samurai Jack bluray, which I got as well for $80, this is a steal as work was actually done to make the visual experience the best possible. SJ, while a fantastic series, is an absolutely laughable bluray. Avatar Aang for the proverbial win.

If you’ve never watched this series, I highly recommend it. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, the story telling and art work are amazing. Do not confuse it with the feature film. My kids were hooked on this show and once my husband and I watch a few episodes, we were hooked, too! We even made an event out of the final episode airing so many years ago. I was so happy when retrolio had this as a prime deal on Prime Day!
