This may be the last review every written on this site about this game. I hope it is. I hope that there is not a perpetual need for football / gaming nerds to dig through the bargain bins at their local game store to find a three year old game with cripplingly bare-boned features and a creepy mix of fantasy teams/stadiums and legendary (and not so legendary) players of the past. The aesthetic is jarring – seemingly more at place in an “nfl blitz” type of game. But, just like other bits of fluff like a game’s commentary and purported broadcast-style presentation, it fades into the background after a few days time, leaving you to grapple with the only thing that you buy a game for – the gameplay.Because, this year, as I played through the demo of of the only “football” game in town (madden 11), I realized something. On a whim, I went searching online, and found a lot of others had realized something too. Madden 11 – is not a football game. An NFL license does not a football game make. Crisp beautiful screenshots does not a football game make. Licenses are a convenience, as are graphics. Physics and intelligence (well – the fake/programmed versions of these things) is what makes a football game. I started to wonder why a running back, once wrapped up at the legs, would slide past three defensive linemen who were standing in front of him. I wondered why star pass rushers would grapple with an offensive linemen for any length of time, never being able to shake him. Or.

Well, to start out, I have been a “Madden” fan since the early 90’s. I am a football fan period!! With that being said. I bought this game cause i did not want another Madden game for my PS3, seeing that i have so many of them for my ps1 & ps2 systems, which i still play. I wanted something different to make the experience fresh for me on the PS3. I also did not want to pay an arm and a leg for another game, you know with gas prices being what they are and all! :) This game was an answr to my prayer! i have no other 2K games to compare it to, so i guess that helps. True enough, it only has old school players to chose from, but i don’t have a problem with that seeing these are the players that i grew up watching and made me fall in love with football anyway. ok the overall graphics could be a little better, but with the HD effect, cool sideline and huddle views, oh and my favorite part of all the trash talking, it wont even bother you. as far as gameplay, same as Madden to me. It is a little hard on defense to stop the run, but you wont mind that either when you are on offense. the only reason i gave it 4 stars and not five is because it would have been nice to be able to mix the up to date rosters with the all-pros. But overall i LOVE IT!! IT is hard to put the controller down, and i have not felt like that in years about a football game. BUY IT!!! If you are a real football fan you will love it like i do!!

great game if you like the classic greats of football and know football strategy as this game requires allot of customization to get your team setup the way you want to play.

Ok, it may not be the NFL because we all know EA and the NFL monopolized the NFL gaming competition. However, on PS3 at 1080 this game is one of the best looking sports games hands down. The play is bone crunching, hard tackles, gang tackles, interactive fans. The sidelines are brimming with all kinds of activity and when you run out of bounds into the sideline, you hit whomever/whatever is there.Due to NFL license as mentioned above, 2K had to get creative and I think they did an excellent job and creating some really awesome looking stadiums. The only draw back for me as a single player is that the season is not on-going with the same team. Once you win the APF Championship your done and have to create a new season.I am not much for online sports play. For the price you can pick this game up for it is worth every cent. There is not a football game out as accurate and as detailed as this game. After 20 years you think EA would get it right but Madden 09 is yet another hyped up flop. Anyone that has played the series for any amount of time can hardly disagree. The new contender will be back breaker and the Euphoria engine. But in 2010, EA’s NFL license expires. Let’s hope the NFL will not renew this load of garbage and allow fair competition back into the football franchise. If not, I will continue to boycott the NFL as well.

Although not as feature-rich as the Madden series that I’m used to, this game has a lot to offer. The game play exceeds that of EA’s Madden games, especially the more recent Madden versions. Although the details of the graphics (faces, etc) may not be as clean and realistic, the game play (which is much more important) is better. The players move more realistically, they react to hits more realistically, the physics of the game feel much more real. The fact that EA has the NFL license leaves 2K Sports stuck using some historical players and made up teams, but they do well with what they have to work with. The lack of a franchise mode keeps it from being a 5-star game. If future versions add such a mode, this game would be everything Madden is supposed to be but has lately fallen short of.

I love this game! The graphics are great! Playing with the old time players who I never got to see before is so much fun! For the price, this game brings lots of fun to football!
