Sly Cooper was one of the big three mascots (or pairs as it may be) for the PS2. Alongside Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank, Sly inherited the mantle left by the first three Crash Bandicoot games on the PS1. In this respect, Sly overwhelmingly succeeds. I can definitely see Crash Bandicoot threads that run through this game. Sly acts a spiritual successor of sorts with mostly linear levels, great level design, polished graphics, and entertaining voice acting. The controls are really tight and the levels are varied and fun. Overall, the game feels very well polished with special praise going to the cel shaded graphics which really stand out, even today.Having said all of that, Sly is definitely skewed towards kids. The story is decidedly PG. Jak 2 this is not. The levels are extremely linear, and while collecting all of the special tokens may not be super easy, completing the levels usually is. Additionally, Sly can pull off certain spy moves and super spy moves throughout the game. The spy moves can only be mapped to one button and the super spy moves are totally context based. Altogether, they make the experience a bit more friendly than most other platformers.Sly is a lot of fun. It’s pretty short, but it’s great while it lasts.

This is the 2nd time I’ve purchased this game in the last 10 years because all my grandchildren love it. The first one broke and they were devastated. Out of 6 of the grandkids, 4 look forward to coming to Nana’s to play it. The other 2 love to watch the others play, like it was a cartoon.

Don’t let the title of this game throw you. Almost undoubtedly, many PS2 owners will overlook this game, thinking it’s simply kid’s stuff. Well, know now that Sly Cooper is the most original game to come along in quite awhile, and for kids and adults alike, it’s one of the best titles out there, hands down. Everything, from gameplay to presentation, is perfect, and it’s truly a rewarding gaming experience. The game is a typical 3D platformer, with the hero, Sly Cooper, master thief, trekking through various locales in hopes of restoring the five pieces of his “Thievius Raccoonus”, his family’s great book of stealing. The book was torn apart by the group known as the Five Fiends, and now, it’s up to Sly and his buddies to overcome the villians and steal what is rightfully theirs. The graphics are splendid, taking full command of the PS2’s capabilities with gorgeous — and fitting — cel-shading. The voice-acting, while a little hokey, has its moments, but the real prize of the game is its overall presentation. From opening credits to cut-scenes, Sly Cooper weaves a fun, truly original tale that can only beg for more sequels. The gameplay is precise, with Sly a cinch to control. A quick tutorial mission acts as the first “stage,” so novice gamers will have no problems figuring out how to make Sly climb, jump, swing, and do other marvelous things with his unique cane. Special “Super Sneaky” moves are available with a simple press of a button, and special techniques can be unlocked.

I have played this game ever since I was little and still pick it up every once in a while for a play through. The game is kind of kid oriented, but the commentary between the characters is still funny. The controls are easy and you do get very used to them. Try switching to another game with differing controls, and I was in a world of hurt in the other game. The power ups you collect from each "normal" level are so much fun to mess with, especially Stun that you can only get after you defeat Clockwerk, the leader of the Fiendish Five. I would highly recommend this game to anybody that is looking for a light gaming experience and wants to chalk another one up on their "favorites" list. Happy playing!

Beautifully rendered levels, intuitive controls, and varied gameplay make this a great platformer. The storyline is fun, if not a bit dopey at times. The boss battles take on different formats: ranging from memory-testing button mashing battles to typical Crash Bandicootesque skirmishes. This adds variety to the gameplay. The moves learned from collecting all pieces of the Thievious Racoonus are typically worth the hassle of finding all of the level’s hint bottles, though some are totally useless. The two standout drawbacks for me were the game’s length(about 10 hours of total gameplay) and lack of difficulty. This left me wanting more. Other than that, this is one solidly constructed game that should be on the top of everyone’s rental list, but left out of your shopping cart.
