Gamertag Gremdude here with another review. I originally preordered this game for the PS3 but when retrolio pushed the freaking release date back to 9/11, I went ahead and picked up the Xbox version. Just finished this game and I have to say I pleasantly surprised overall with the game. Most of the points made by other reviewers are correct. Voice work is pretty bad throughout. There are limited enemy types and they just keep introducing “new” version of the old enemies with more hit points. Some of the quests are pretty boring and this game could definitely use a better quest direction indicator. The framerate(especially near the end of the game) is pretty awful. So why do I like it so much? It is just a fun game!! Sure it is not a hardcore RPG but it is fun watching your character get stronger and stronger throughout the game(if you play, I recommend putting skill points into only one kind of combat until it is full and then move to another as you level up.) Whichever skill you invest highest in will really pay dividends. If you going to be a mage, just pick fire and max it out as you will be practically unstoppable by the end of the game.Graphics are pretty nice. Rain effects are well done. The game really never looks that smooth with a choppy frame rate always but this never really effects the gameplay. For the guy who said you can finish the game is 16 hrs, SURE if you don’t do any sidequests!! I spent 25 hrs playing this game!! You can finish Fallout III in 12 hrs if you do.

I am a big fan of the Gothic and Risen series. This game is not as good as Gothic 1 or 2, but it is not horrible either. The graphics are nice. I find that I cannot stop playing. Having just finished Oblivion again, I picked up this game and have not been able to put it down. Give it a chance, I think you will enjoy it. It is Gothic in name only. You will meet some old friends in this game. If you are really craving the old school Gothic feel, Risen and Risen 2 will not let you down.

Gothic 4 is an entertaining medieval fantasy RPG. The world graphics and indeed the animations are top notch except when it comes to characters having a conversation, this is probably where the game looks it’s most amateur. Overall it’s a good game not as good in my opinion as elder scrolls, dark souls or dragons dogma but the game is certainly better than any other medieval RPG not mentioned above. The game is technically open world albeit areas have to be unlocked via quests. The combat can be a tad simplistic but serves its purpose and is very effective at switching weapons quickly. The beginning of the game and the first area (the island) is rather tedious, but after escaping the beginning area the game quickly transforms from annoying to fun. All in all there is nothing wrong with this game, but there are things that could have been better. If you are looking for a medieval RPG and you have already played elder scrolls, and dragons dogma then this is the next best game. I recommend giving it a try!

i actually love the game.. im a big fan of rpg’s when u add an open world makes it better. all & all i’d say get it.. its basically skyrim on an older engine. i mean u pretty much do the same things, only real difference is its old school gaming.

I bought this game before reading the poor reviews from all the gaming sites and I’m glad I did because I may not have bought one of my favorite games of 2010. I disagree with the low scores. This game is great if you love this genre of game. There’s plenty of exploring, lots of armor/weapon drops that all have different “skins” to change the look of your character, lots of recipes to collect for crafting (nothing complicated or time consuming like MMO’s), graphics are much better than Risen or Divinity II. They give you a reason to explore with rewarding items in chest hidden and not so hidden all over the world, along with a few items to collect if you are into that sort of thing, which I’m not. There are a few bad points to consider before purchasing. The dialogue is pretty bad, but I play with the sound down to watch tv at the same time and it doesn’t seem so corny when you are reading subtitles. The combat is a bit clunky, but not enough to ruin the game. The skill tree is shallow, more depth would have greatly enhanced the game.I had been waiting for something like this for a long time and I’m completely happy with my purchase. I don’t see any reason for a second play through, which might be another factor to consider before purchasing. I actually have been playing this over Fallout: New Vegas. I keep sticking New Vegas in my 360, but can’t stop thinking of Arcania: Gothic 4 while playing it and usually switch.
