Well, if you’re into Skyrim or its predecessor Oblivion like I am, then this game might be for you. While it is definitely no Skyrim, it does remind me somewhat of Oblivion with some similar storylines and quests. While parts of the game are much more primitive than Oblivion, like moving around, and trying to pick up specific items (frustrating at times), and dumb dialog choices, it does offer a good variety of challenges and side quests… enough to keep you busy for hours upon hours. There are some great creatures to kill and the locales are pretty detailed. But the maps suck – not very informative and there are no labels so you really don’t know where you’re going, or into what particular structure you are going. The controls take a while to learn, and I wish I could make my character run faster than he does. But, this is the closest game I’ve found to the Oblivion/Skyrim theme, and I’ve tried plenty, and am having a good time with it. Give it a try if you can find it at a decent price.Fun – 4/5Graphics – 3.5/5Storyline – 3/5Movement and overall flow of the game – 2.5/5Maps/Quick travel – 1/5

Gothic 4 was a purchase on a whim. I had a few days to burn until Fallout New Vegas came out and I was looking for something that would keep me occupied over the weekend. I had known about it for a couple weeks but didn’t expect much from it. While at Gamestop, it caught my eye and I decided to give it a try. About a week later, I’m still playing the game and enjoying it immensely. It’s got it’s problems but nothing that kills it for me. Hit the jump to see my first impressions of Arcania: Gothic 4.From what I understand, the Gothic series is pretty big in the UK but never really hit home in the states. We’ve gotten the games before but they usually received mediocre reviews with little fanfare. So, before it ever hit shelves, Gothic 4 had that going against it. Plus, throw in the fact that you probably never heard of it before me telling you (unless you’re an RPG buff) and the game could float away into obscurity. If that happened, no one would notice, but you should. Why should you care about this game? Because it’s not half bad and if you have taken a liking to games such as Oblivion – third person RPG’s with swords, spells, and quests – you may very well find yourself enjoying it.The game begins with a no named character who is a shepherd in a small island village. His wants to marry his girlfriend but her father forbids it. So, the father sends the man on three trials which basically teach you game mechanics. After your final trial and subsequent approval.

It’s like skyrims younger cousin. Not as long. Not as involved. Still pretty good.Ever since skyrim I have been searching for the next best thing. A bit of hope with this game. About 25 hours, interesting characters, pretty good customization. I liked it.

i’ve read a lot about this game, and most of it is bad. although i am new to the gothic series, i think this game is just terrific. the one thing that none of these reviews mention is the fact that there are absolutely no loading screens, except when you die. go into a cave, no load screen. go into a house, no load screen. to me that is was really mad me like the game. i play a lot of RPG’s and this is the first one on xbox that i have encountered that is like this. you see fallout and oblivion are two of my favorite games, and both of the games have loading screens every time you go into anything. which of course is nothing to really complain about, but that’s just it, the simple fact that there are none give’s the game so much more of a better standing. so what if it messed up the gothic series, and gives you a lot of the same things from other games, that doesn’t mean that this game isn’t good for what it is. this game for me was probably just as addicting as fallout 3/oblivion and fable 2. and all of those games are very addicting.
