Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is a remake for PSP of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (originally released for PCE (thank you for mentioning this, M. Sanges)). It’s not just a lame port, however, the game’s been beautifully remastered. The graphics look just great, and apart from the overall difficulty of this title, it doesn’t feel like you’re playing an old (school) game with some polish over it.This time around, another member of the Belmont clan, Richter, is out to put an end to the once again revived vampire overlord Count Dracula. One of Dracula’s minions has abducted Richter’s girlfriend, and so Richter got his whip Vampire Killer from the attic to get her back.Like most Castlevania games, you play the game from a 2D platformer perspective, running sideways, climbing up ladders and jumping off or onto platforms. With your whip or a couple of secondary weapons like Holy Water, you take out all foes. There is a second playable character in the game, Maria, Richter’s girlfriend’s sister, but you have to free her from a more or less hidden dungeon first. She doesn’t use the Belmont whip, instead she controls animals that fight for her.Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is hard, which sometimes makes it frustrating to play. First of all you don’t have to get hit that often to run out of health points. In addition there aren’t a lot of options to replenish your health points. And those that are, are usually hidden behind for example walls that you have to break with yo.

If you are looking for a special, one of a kind platformer, this game is a compilation of what Castlevania fans have been waiting for, and without the hefty price tag to actually own all of the games included! Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Akumajo Dracula X: Chi No Rondo, and a spectacular remake of Chi No Rondo all make this game a worthwhile purchase. Most folks in the US have been waiting for Chi No Rondo since the mid-90’s when it was released for the Turbo Duo. Importing this to the US was a costly and timely manner, usually cumulatively costing $400 for both the game and Turbo Duo console, and the “system card”. For many, though, the gameplay, soundtrack, and replay value were worth it. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is arguably the best platformer ever released for the Sony Playstation, and has been hard to find at times. The music, graphics, challenge, and replay value all make it a must-own. This compilation is truly one of the best values you will ever find for a video game. The only reason it does not get 5 stars from me is that it does not include the Japanese Sega Saturn version of “Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight”, which is essentially Symphony of the Night, but with 2 bonus levels, character helpers, and music.

The re-mastered version of Rondo of Blood is one of the hardest Castlevania games I have ever played. It is not so much the enemies or the obstacles you have to overcome, it’s the restrictions of the main character-Richter Belmont. Once you get to the third stage you can rescue Maria and use her as a playable character. She is much easier to control than Richter. You can also unlock Symphony of Night (“S.o.N”) and the Original Rondo of Blood in subsequent stages. You can also use the old cheats for S.o.N which makes things interesting. The graphics are really incredible for the re-mastered Rondo of Blood, but it is really frustrating to get through the stages because of Richter’s restrictions. If you are a fan of the series you won’t be disappointed; just try not to break your PSP.

This has to be one of the greatest gems of the PSP. “Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles” is not only is it a great stand alone game, but it also includes two other Castlevania games within it!Also included are:Castlevania – Rondo of Blood “The original game for the TG-CD that is very different form the PSP.”And the most sought after Castlevania…Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – complete in it’s entire as it was released for the PSone.Symphony of the Night can be downloaded through the Playstation Network for about $10. But why do that when you can get THREE games for the price of the one!!!There are is new voice acting by the original voice actors on the other two games as well!!!
