The game itself is an attempt to take the 3d lords of shadow action combat and translate it to a 2d style. It works for the most part but has some strange design choices. The game is broken down into 3 main chapters with each being a different characters to play as with different abilities. To work this in all experience and upgrades gathered in one chapter carry over to the next, despite it making no sense from a story perspective, it was nice keeping allthe unlocked combos. There does not seem to be any chapter back tracking so once youhave all abilities in a chapter go get the upgrades if you want them that play through. Also, exp seems to scale as you progress chapters. I found my self at level 10 by the end of chapter 1, 15ish at the end of 2, and max level of i think it was either 18 or 20 by the time i was a bit through chapter 3. Took me about 11 hours to 100% the game on normal and while it was fun enoughi don’t see a replay in my future like i use to with the previous portable castlevania games, mostly because i hate all of the insane levels of quick time events. Even opening a chest is a button mash adventure for no reason. As some who has played the series since the first game i appreciated the more flushed out story that lords of shadow brought and mirror of fate does a good job connecting the dots in the end. Chapter 3 is basically just explaining everything in chapter 2 though so it really only comes to a full completion by the very end.

good game, nothing out of this world, epic story, great music, the only thing dislike of this game is that you can play with 3 character but all play the same even Alucard.

  3. Diane

Just wanted to reiterate what others have said – that the typical gaming sites generally missed the boat with their ratings on this one, especially the IGN review. As someone who played the original Castlevania’s on the NES and then picked it up again on the PS3 with Lords of Shadow , this game was a great blend of those two concepts. I missed the whole Metroidvania-type games that began with Symphony of the Night, so can’t comment on how well this game would be perceived if that’s your style. The graphics are amazing considering the platform, and the orchestral music is just as good as LoS on the PS3 and is equally incredible. And they did a great job at incorporating the LoS fight mechanics into a 2D platformer setting. On complaint is that the bosses can be a bit easy due to the auto-save points mid-battle – it would have been nice to have an option to turn those off.

The game was quite enjoyable , in that it had good action and story building . I wish there was some way for me to enjoy it again. I let my friend borrow the game once i finished and he loves it as well. Good buy
