Sometimes I must remind myself of what a JRPG is. Turn based battles. Dungeons. Bosses. A cast of varying characters. And a unique gimmick that sets it apart. Conception II is the textbook definition of a JRPG.In the world of Attera, the 6 elements basically have balance throughout the world. One day, the element of Dusk started to go on a rampage creating a total of 8 Labyrinths, with each one spawing monsters to hunt down humans. In response to this, the Star God has granted teenages from the ages of 16-18 with the "Star Brand", which generates the element of light, Ether, to combat the monsters. You enroll as the "God’s Gift", a male with an abnormally high Ether Count. You enroll into a large school for Deciples (The name given to people who are branded) and now must travel with a cast of 7 female characters to destroy the labyrinths once and for all.Conception II is notable as other than the main plotline above, there are about 4 other plotlines intersecting the main one. Which means, this game CAN and WILL get confusing if you don’t keep up with the terminology that this game expects you to know. Unfortunatly, the characters is where this game starts falling apart. The main character starts off with an interesting revenge story, but it doesen’t go from there until your nearing the end, and even then it’s unfulfilling. The seven heroines is where the game picks up a little. Each one of the 7 heroines have varying personalities and bonding with each one is.

This game is downright weird, and it’s pretty awesome. Let me explain. The game is set in a fantastic world in which random people spontaneously become “branded” with a mark from the “God of the Stars,” and must travel to an academy in order to develop their skills and fight the bad guys. Your character has been blessed with a ridiculous amount of “Ether” energy, making you literally “God’s Gift” to the world, and people keep reminding you of this by constantly referring to you as “God’s Gift,” or even “G.G.” sometimes. It’s your job, as the “God’s Gift” to infiltrate the labyrinths that the bad guys come out of and sterilize them.*At its heart Conception 2 is an awesome ATLUS RPG, with tons of fiddly rules and things to customize in order to get the max damage out of your characters. When fighting, your guys surround the enemies and, depending on where each one is during certain circumstances they will get bonuses to chaining combos, damage bonuses, etc. It’s a very entertaining battle system, I have to say.The rest of the game is a dating simulator, which is kind of how games have been trending lately anyhow so… why not? (I’m looking at you, Captain Shepard!) It’s just that this game doesn’t try to hide it at all. The better you do at talking to the girls, the more they will like you. If they like you a lot, they get stat bonuses in the dungeons, which is all we care about, right??Anyway, here’s where it gets weird. The titular game mechanic of Conception 2 is the ability.

This game is fun and quirky! I thoroughly enjoyed dungeon running, and classmating. My biggest gripe is that the sparse online components are local only, not through the internet. The DLC in my opinion is for the most part, reasonably priced.
