I love this franchise, and while this side-game is a completely different genre (something more akin to Resident Evil than Phoenix Wright), the story value is strong. It’s all about the story with these games. And, arguably, the aesthetics (visuals and music). If the gameplay were a complete failure, I’d deduct points. But the gameplay is passable (in some ways, moreso than Resident Evil!), and the puzzles are fun. You’ll get tired of seeing evil Monokumas by the end, but you’ll probably enjoy the plot if you liked the other games in the Danganronpa series.

    Very uniq game.

  3. Masblue

Different take on the Danganronpa series focused on puzzles with a bit of action FPS mixed in but not so much do to turn away players less inclined to fast paced play.

I am reviewing this from the perspective of a gamer who has never played the other two games. I am not a fan of visual novels, but this series looked extremely interesting. Ultra Despair Girls has a very good balance of text/dialog and action. I would say about 50/50. This was perfect for what I was looking for. I know a lot of reviewers say to play the other two games first because this is basically a sequel/prequel and spoils game elements from the other two Danganropa games, but since I have no interest in those games, I didn’t care. And honestly, I liked the story for what it was and was never confused about what was going on. Plenty of references to the first game, but events were explained through flashbacks or directly from the characters.First off the game seemed a little short. I was able to beat it in under 16 hours. Granted there are collectibles I missed, but I figured that was more important for a newgame+ scenario. So I would have something to still do and not get burned out on my first play though. There are TONS of great things about the game – soundtrack is catchy, character models look great, game runs well, the visuals ooze with style, and the voice acting was quite good.I wasn’t a big fan of how the leveling system worked. You would gain experience and level like a normal RPG, but your skills had to be found in skill books scattered throughout the game. It would be quite simple to walk passed a new skill if you weren’t super observant. Also, some skills can.
