This is my favorite game! If you love classic RPG gameplay, great fantasy plot line, or if you’re a fan of the original Playstation version (or any other DQ title for that matter) then this is the game for you. There are quite a few changes from the original Dragon Warrior VII, but most are very welcome additions that made the gameplay much smoother. Buy this game now! This game alone would be worth buying a 2ds, 3ds, or New3ds.

It’s Dragon Quest 7, but with expanded content from the PS1 version, and no more random encounters (tho sometimes mobs will spawn right on top of you, so thats basically the same.) Expect to be in this for a long haul, but also expect to love it.

    Excellent gift for the holidays

An absolute masterpiece of a game. If you like JRPG’s, this is for you. It’s a massive game and you can sink a lot of time into it. I’ve put about 60-70 hours and I’m still enjoying the game. Square Enix took their time with this localization and you can tell. It’s a fantastic re-imagining of a former PS2 game.

Love this series, I grew up with these games and to now have it on a portable device is a welcome change. Graphics are good and the gameplay is smooth. If you’re a fan of the series don’t miss out on another great title. There is a lot of story and grinding for levels, but easy to follow and welcomes any new fan to the series smoothly.

The graphics are amazing, I love the story.

I have been a fan of the Dragon Quest series since Dragon Warrior Monsters on the Game Boy Color. I preferred the monsters games to the main series because the coolest thing in the series to me was the awesome monster designs from Akira Toriyama!DQ VIII looks great to me, far better graphics than the most recent DQ title I’ve played , V. The 3D graphics look great on the 3DS with or without the 3D slider turned on. It takes about 2 hours to get to your first battle, which is both boring and tedious, I’m not gonna lie. But once you get into the first battle you get to see the changes they’ve made to the battle screen. First off, the 3D character models and their battle animations look vibrant and alive. No longer do we have to leave this aspect of the battles to the imagination. I appreciate everything that’s happening on the top screen of the ds. The Battle decisions, monsters, and your team all fight on the top screen with bottom devoted to your HP and MP stats. This looks cleaner than in previous installments. So far there’s no random battle either *gasp*!You can see your foes in front of you and choose whether or not to engage with them.I can’t comment on the full storyline of the game because I haven’t finished it yet, but so far it seems charming and full of DQ’s particular brand of action role playing game play. I’m excited to put some more hours into it and watch the story unfold between these colorful characters and the world opening up around them.

If you liked Dragon Quest 8, SNES Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, etc., chances are good you will like this. The graphics update is on par with DQ8 and the signature art style was rendered perfectly. The sound is good, the combat is classic menu-based style, the monster design is excellent, and the class system is a welcome addition to the combat mechanics, but also changes the characters’ costumes, which is nice too. DQ7 itself doesn’t add really anything to the genre — and doesn’t intend to, but rather takes a bunch of aged mechanics and just puts new graphics on them. So honestly, if you’re a fan of classic JRPGs, you should know almost exactly what to expect concept and gameplay-wise, but it really is the quality of execution that makes a JRPG emerge as a classic, as DQ7 certainly has.Two disclaimers:1. This game is like 100 hours long.2. Story-wise, it focuses more on NPC characters in the many towns to which you travel, and the main plot and main character story arcs make up a minority of the game’s long playtime. In summary:If you like classic JRPGs and the disclaimers aren’t dealbreakers, then this game is definitely worth checking out.

  9. Robert Pryke

Dragon Quest 7 is a unique game in the Dragon Quest series. Most DQ games are about 30 hours long. This game is 100+ just for the main story. If you did all the side quests and the new random dungeons you could easily get 150 hours out of this title. The nice thing about this game is the length doesn’t feel like filler. Much like the Witcher 3, the length comes from little stories that you discover around the game world as you progress. However, you really need to like classic 1980s JRPG gameplay to enjoy this game. This game is not for you if:You don’t enjoy talking to every NPC in a town, perhaps multiple times, to move forward. You want a game’s first battle to start before 2-3 hours into the game. You hate menu based combat and puzzles. You can’t choose or change jobs until about 20 hours into the game.If these things don’t bother you, then you have a great game to play that can be done in little bursts. The game has a weak overall story arc, but excels in little stories for each gameplay section. It makes it a nice title to play on a handheld as you have goals to accomplish and finish. The game has great writing, great scenarios and you’ll care about the people that you are helping out.Mix that with a job system to customize your characters and you have a fun game that keeps you wanting to come back for more each day.As a fan of Dragon Warrior 7 on the PS1 I was excited about this remake. I loved it then but for most people it was just too archaic to play with the grap.

This game is AMAZING! I’m over 20 hours in and (very minor spoiler) I’m finally almost able to choose a class! What more can you ask from in an RPG? I have been completely immersed while playing and looking for items and secrets everywhere, making sure I don’t miss anything. I cannot recommend this game enough to RPG and Dragon Quest fans!Something really nifty about battles in this is that there are certain items like a Wizard’s Staff that can be used from the inventory to cast magic and being able to quick-swap equipment in battle without using your turn. For example, you can be using a bossing weapon that hits a single enemy hard then switch to a mobbing one for hitting multiple enemies if a boss spawns more monsters.Traveling between different areas in this game, due to its unique nature, is extremely easy too! I’ve never felt like it’s tedious to run back to an area I’ve been to before for any reasons, especially since you get Zoom (a spell to essentially teleport to a previously visited town) quite early on in the game! It’s really cool to have all the areas that this game has and be able to actually explore them as you wish without it feeling like a grind to walk all over the place. When there are monsters in the field, you can just ignore them if you really want to unless you’re in corridors or something.
