I read 60-70 books a year, and this is hands down the best book I’ve read all year. It drew me in from the first chapter and I couldn’t put it down. The prose style is subtle and beautiful without getting too far away from the reality of the world—and that reality is what’s so special about this book! The plot is quietly terrifying, but not in a way that make me scared to read it, nor was it too much to handle considering everything else that’s going on in the world right now. I was desperate to find out what happened in the end. You will be too when you read this book, and you should.

This novel is not your typical thriller. It is not your typical apocalyptic read. It is at it’s heart a story about family. How family is every little thing and what actually constitutes a family. It is a near perfect read. I was totally immersed and deeply invested in these characters. I would have preferred a bit more clarity as to where the future lay but I understand why the writer chose not to gift his readers this. The future is not promised.

A family of four tries to get away from the bustle of New York City by vacationing in a semi-secluded, but luxurious rental. However, their reprieve is short-lived. A series of unexplained events shuts down the cell towers and satellite systems, rendering modern technology useless. In a twist, the owners of the rental show up with the news that most of East Coast has lost power. Dramatic events unfold as the two families grapple with the unknown and a new reality in a world ostensibly destroyed.

We readers are privy throughout to the thoughts of each of the six major characters in LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND. Whatever they choose to say aloud may (or often does not) reflect their internal assessment of the situation at hand. At various points the author inserts unexplained events which leave us as mystified as the characters themselves. We learn from him as well more about the outside world then the six are ever to know. These devices catch us up as we read along, propelling the narrative forward and inducing a growing sense of isolation and fear. The entire novel seems especially prescient under the current actually existing circumstances – which only serves to heighten the suspense. I read it straight through in two days and found myself (a dystopian enthusiast) quite taken in by the entire experience. If you haven’t read STATION ELEVEN, yet, it would be a perfect follow-up! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An interrupted vacation in a secluded area of Long Island, a possible national (or global) emergency, race, class, and family dynamics…obviously, Leave the World Behind is a very timely novel. As Clay, Amanda, and their children, Archie and Rose, enjoy their time away from Brooklyn, they hear a random knock at their door late one night. Standing outside are the owners of the house, George and Ruth Washington, the elderly African-American couple who own the Airbnb home Clay and Amanda are renting. The Washington’s escaped from NYC after a massive blackout caused them to feel unsafe in their high rise apartment. Obviously, neither couple was happy with the situation, and polite skepticism was the order of the day.“It was torture, a home invasion without rape or guns,” thinks Amanda. What unfolds over the next forty-eight hours, as the couples come to an uneasy truce, is bizarre and creepy. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the flowery prose, I did appreciate the tension that built slowly throughout the novel. It’s a short, quick read, and I couldn’t seem to turn the pages fast enough. I was genuinely curious about what was happening.Unfortunately, the conclusion wasn’t my favorite. I understand why Rumaan Alam chose to end it the way he did, but, for me, it was a disappointment after the potent build-up.Overall, this is an enlightening social commentary on the state of our country, and I appreciated its felicitous message.3.5 starsMany thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for my re.

Bravo!!! Finally a novel that speaks to the human condition in post modern life, and profound delusions most of us use to build our precarious sense of normal. There is no normal. Especially now, and more importantly here.We have not had a normal. Normal has eluded us for so long, we are forced to reconstruct it, using the flimsiest of materials. But more importantly, we have lost the ability to appreciate just how abnormal things are.The prototypical family of four head out of the City in the oppressive month of August, off to their pedestrian vacation in a remote Airbnb. The gradual erosion of cell service, and finally loss of all service on any device, cuts a stark relief of what any of us think is a “normal” day.Very soon, the owners of the Airbnb arrive unannounced, deeply shaken about a massive blackout in the City. But it’s far more than a “regular” blackout. Something has happened for which they don’t yet have words.Stunned by the loss of WiFi, and no way to learn what’s happened, the characters break into two camps. The first is to frantically try to maintain some sense of normalcy by cooking food and washing laundry, breaking out the alcohol, and waiting for “news” to come. But it will not come. The second camp decides to go forth, and explore what is actually happening. To simply observe, without bias, what is happening outside of the secure fortress of the Airbnb. Because, as the author so gently points out, the natural world isn’t subject to the brainwashing we per.

This novel really scared me — not like a horror story or a supernatural story — it scared me because it quickly took the characters from a quiet mundane life to a totally changed life but they didn’t know what had caused the changes and what was going on in the world.Amanda and Clay and their two children live in New York City and rented a house in an isolated area – near the ocean but actually in the middle of nowhere. The house is beautiful and they settle in to have a great week as a family. Until the second night…when there is a knock on the door after dark. No one they know – but who was it? It turned out to be the older couple who owned the house they were staying in. They were out for dinner when the power went off in New York City so instead of going to their high rise apartment where the elevators and air conditioning wouldn’t be working, they decided to drive to their vacation home to see if they could stay there until the power went back on. But were they who they said they were??? The power was still on in the vacation home but the television, phones and laptops no longer worked. Amanda and Clay let the owners stay for what they planned to be one night and then the world started to go wrong – no one really knew what was wrong but it just wasn’t right. As the four adults and two children try to discover what’s going on, things just keep getting worse. Amanda and Clay want to keep their family safe but they don’t know if they are safe from the owners of the hous.

This book left me breathless…just, wow. This author is masterful – the suspense and terror was palpable for so much of this novel, yet there were moments of clarity and beauty that were poignant reminders of how fragile life ALREADY is, and that we truly should be long life as if it were ending tomorrow, because it very well could, and slowly is. Amazing, but definitely a heavy read with many triggers (this is a book about the end of the world and what that may look like), but so worth it.

My favorite kind of book – can’t put it down, & provides lots to think about for some time to come…

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam is a suspenseful work of literary fiction. It starts slowly with Amanda and Clay renting a remote country house to spend a vacation with their teen children. As the story progresses, the owners of the rental home seek shelter due to a dramatic blackout on the east coast, so they arrive unannounced after dark. The drama increases after their unexpected arrival as suspicions arise and mysterious catastrophic world events unfold. This novel reminded me of a Twilight Zone episode where communities will either unite or dissolve due to suspicion and paranoia of the unknowable “enemy” and I found it to be cinematic in its scope. There are underlying threads of racism, current US politics, and survival of the fittest.I am rating it a 4.5 because I feel like several elements could have been explored a bit more and the ending felt abrupt, but I recommend this book to those who enjoy suspenseful gothic narratives.
