I usually read non-fiction such as history or biography. Occasionally I read a quick, easy mystery like CJ Boxx or Carl Hiaasen to break up the monotony Since my wife and I are going to Barcelona for our honeymoon I decided to read this book as it came highly recommended. It did not disappoint! I haven’t read a complex, lengthy novel in years and I was lamenting the possibility of not being able to finish it before our trip since I usually read a few pages at night before falling asleep. Since I was laid up for a few days with a bad back I was able to finish it in record time (for me). This novel has it all: twisting plot, richly descriptive language, complex characters, and a setting which I am looking forward to visiting (thanks to the walking tour map included in the book). I am looking forward to reading more of Zafon’s novels.

From page one until the end. Characters, story, and setting are compelling. I don’t like reviews which rehash the plot, so I will not do that. You will find yourself paging back to get characters and story lines straight. That’s because the plot is complex and some names are quite similar to others. That is not a flaw – just a result of the ambitious undertaking of this author and his translator.Well done!

  3. Judith P Fabisch

This one kept me guessing most of the way through, and while I sometimes got lost in keeping tract of the many characters, I enjoyed the adventure of discovering the solution. Great if you love puzzles.

  4. Et in Arcadia ego

It has been years since I have so loved a story as I have Zafon’s “Shadow of the Wind”.Five stars also for the outstanding translation by Lucia Graves. In a few months time I am going to read it again. I want to walk in the gas-lit streets of Barcelona and revisit the well-crafted characters who lived there. I have to smile when I think of the lovable, humorous Fermin. Lacrymose over the fate of Nuria Monfort. Shudder at the thought of ill-using, bloody Fumero. These are just a few of the fine gallery of “dramatis personae” caught up in this complex, haunting, never to be forgotten story. It is reminiscent of the brooding, gothic city stories of Lovecraft, the darkly mysterious tale of Diane Setterfield. Then Zafon polishes off the story with truly satisfying denouement clearly beyond the ordinary. Upon closing the book, I let out a long sigh and thought “well done”.High recommendation. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of this story. Seriously.

My new book club chose this book (our first) on the recommendation of an enthusiastic fan. When I started it I realized I had tried to read it before – and failed, finding it too descriptive, flowery, convoluted, gothic and therefore tedious. The romantic hyperbole was enough to make me gag! However, I decided to give it another try so I wouldn’t be a book club drop-out. Thank goodness I did! For the first 150 pages or more I was still reading flowery excerpts to my husband such as: “…the storm spilling like rivers of blackened blood between the clouds…” spewing my critical distain. This kind of language was on every page! By the time I was 250 pages into the book you could not pry it out of my hands! I finally got it and was hooked! While it requires you to suspend belief as the outrageous story unrolls, it ends up being spell-binding and well worth it. I have not read many books written by Spaniards and translated into English, and perhaps that was why I found it difficult to get into, but the characters, dialog and storyline are terrific, and frankly the very language I ridiculed for the first 150 pages I find myself returning to and absolutely relishing! A great big wonderful read!

I loved the book, couldn’t put it down and finished it in just a few days. Carlos Zafon is indeed a very talented writer, his descriptions are incredibly nuanced and character development is complex and consistently interesting. The reader is drawn into the story as a participant rather than an observer. I did not want it to end and when it did I wanted to know more. Excellently written written and translated, this is a book you won’t soon forget.

I am half way through this wonderful book and today ordered the two others in the series. The author is a brilliant story teller. The characters are well developed. Do yourself a big favor and order this book now.

This is a book that many might describe as slow. That even I would describe as slow. But it was such poetry and sort of…relaxing to read. It’s a mystery, but nothing too terrible happens… it just has a nice feel and atmosphere and I really enjoyed it.

Hello, I bought this book by recommendation from retrolio and I am glad i did that. The summaries and advertisements which I read made the book seem like a fast-paced bestseller, but it is far from that. It is a profound, serious and in no way simple work about the love for books in an initially child’s, and later in the book a young adult’s life. The book spans over a couple of decades, including the Civil war in Span, though its focus is not the war. The main character comes upon a book which arises his interest and gradually this book and its author become a priority in his life as an assistant at his father’s bookstore. The boy starts investigating the author’s life, and the book becomes partially a biography and a chronicle of a mysterious writer’s life. It rests upon memories and correspondence of people, who knew him. Combining the past and present in a unforgettable mixture, “The Shadow of the Wind” is really a masterpiece. What I did not like so much was a repetition of two love stories, in the past and present, which were very much alike in their tragic and development, but this could have been done on purpose by the author.I would love to read the sequels to this book, which are three more books, but at a later stage, as this is a complex work and needs that one takes his/her time with it and its elaborate characters and plot.

One surprise unravels after another. It is a mystery with so many elements & characters that it is amazing. My tip: keep a graphic for the players in this drama. I can’t imagine how any writer could weave so much into one story and pull it together. It is a rich journey.
