Now THIS is a good book. I’m glad I read this on my Kindle for a few reasons: there were so many great quotes that I could easily highlight, the vocabulary was so rich, making it easier for me to look up the words, and finally, I could turn off the “percent read” at the bottom because I didn’t want this book to end. Gripping, humorous, romantic, and mysterious all wrapped into excellent storytelling.

Sadness, passion, love, loss, heart pounding terror, fear and so much more! The words flow beautifully and make you turn the pages as quickly as you can so you can find out what happens next. Love love love!

There have been only a few books in my life I’ve remembered or will remember always. And no book when I’d finished it, had left me in tears. This one is that kind of book. I wanted to know every single character in the book – save one. And I wanted the book to never end. I will never forget the stories contained in the book of books. And yes, there is more than one story. The author ranks among the very, very best. While I read it on Kindle, I won’t be satisfied until I have a hard copy on my bookshelf. I’m sure I’m be reading it again. I plan to savor the turn of every printed page.

I have to tell you, I bought this book after I saw in the opening credits of Liam Neeson’s movie, "The Commuter." I thought, "If it’s good enough for Liam, it’s good enough for me, ha!"I really enjoyed the book. It’s not action packed but the story is incredibly absorbing and extremely well written. The only reason for the four stars is that it does drag in many parts. In addition, and this is no knock against the author or this book (it’s a knock against me!) the writing is incredibly advanced! It took me a while to read this because there were many times I had to put it down because I felt like I was reading a text book! and my head was too full =) However, I continued through it, and I am glad I did! Definitely recommend this story!

I can’t put into words just how much I love this book. I read The Shadow of the Wind because of a recommendation from my mother-in-law, who knows what a bibliophile I am. I finished this book last night after not being able to put it down for almost three days. After finishing it, I cannot believe I had never heard of CRZ before now.It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made feel like these characters were family by the time it was finished, and I’m so thankful that there are two more books to read, because I’m not ready to give them up. It’s such a beautiful and heart-wrenching story, one of the very most wonderful books I’ve ever read – and I’ve read A LOT.I cannot express how much this book touched me; it truly is like a Carax novel, you get lost in it from the very first page. If you can read, then you MUST read this book, you’ll be a better person for it.

It’s not often that a book has me by the first paragraph. This one not only captured my attention, but riveted me. The plot is full of surprises and never lets up from beginning to end. The book was originally written in Spanish, but the translation is rich and beautiful. More than once I have lingered over descriptions and turns of phrase, reveling in the language itself.Because I love this book so much, I intend to read more of Zafon.

If you are looking for mysterious, fanciful, dazzling, intriguing, heart breaking, and winding then this is the one for you! Beautiful story telling with masterful character development, you will love Fermin and be as in awe of Julian as Daniel is!

Carlos Ruiz Zafón, born in Barcelona in 1964, is known as one of Spain’s most successful contemporary writers whose works have been published in 45 countries. His first novel “Prince of the Mist” (1993) earned the Edebé prize for young adult fiction. He has authored an additional three young adult novels, the last “Marina” published in 1999. “The Shadow of the Wind” (2001) is Zafón’s first novel written for adults; a second adult novel published in 2008 was entitled “The Angels Game” and his latest novel “The Prisoner of Heaven” (2011). Zafón, while a native of Spain, has lived in Los Angeles since 1993 where he has been developing his writing career.”The Shadow of the Wind” is a novel of the mystery/intrigue/love story genre. It is narrated in the first person by the main character of the work; dialog is denoted and is attributable to the person speaking. The writing style is variably complex with many descriptive passages drawing vivid depictions of persons and places; a talent attributable to the author’s penchant for film and screen plays. Although described as an “adult” novel, the writing invokes the author’s previous entry into literature writing for young adults. The composition liberally draws from the persona of young characters in the story and invokes that subtlety in the overall cast of the writing. The tale takes place in Barcelona during the early 1900’s and extends to about 1958. At its heart, the story is about a small cadre of young men brought togethe.

Full of mystery, quirky characters, beautiful women, a scary bad guy and an exotic locale. The human heart and the capacity for love feature as heavily as the many twists and turns down rain-drenched streets and seemingly abandoned mansions.. Writers and book lovers should enjoy this one.I’m thrilled there is a trilogy and am on to the second in the series.

  10. K. S. Rossman

This is a series of 4 novels and this is the first and a wonder of the mind. I love the city Barcelona and the series takes place there through generations of books shops and well anyone who likes magical realism an books will be intrigued and maybe enthralled by the tales.
