I decided to read this book because the setting was in Barcelona and having just visited the city. The novel just drew me in immediately, the way the author described books and the power of books. And then the story takes off in so many levels and so many interesting characters. I couldn’t stop reading.

Beautiful edition of one of my favorite books. Well made with excellent paper stock and red paper edges. The story itself is a fantastic tale of the massive impact books can have on us in the worst of times. Murder, intrigue, and a hidden library of every booklover’s dreams, this is book to keep reading for years to come.

I got this book for a school assignment, but I really enjoyed it. The characters are so deep and there are so many parallels between them all. The story is so intriguing, with many layers and some metafiction. There is young love, old mysteries, death, innocence, and secrecy. It was fun to take notes and try to figure out what really happened and what would happen as I went along. Also, the setting of Barcelona is beautifully described. This book is of another world, another time and place. The city recovering from war, and the characters recovering from all that has changed in the city and their own seperate yet intertwined lives! It all seems to fit together. And for a translation, the words are beautifully chosen. Props to the translator.

I don’t typically leave reviews on retrolio but this book requires praise on another level. As an avid book reader since the age of 12, I can tell you this book tops the list of all books I’ve ever read in my life. I borrowed this from a friend of mine who highly recommended this book. After reading it, I returned the book to her, went online on retrolio and ordered me a copy just so I can own it! The writing is beyond beautiful, phenomenal actually. I haven’t witnessed this level of writing yet by any author. It’s so powerful you can’t help but immerse yourself into the book and feel connected with the characters on a deep level. Please, get it and read it!

I liked the story, the characters and the intrigue. Perhaps it was in the translation, but I found the language somewhat simple and lacking wordsmanship. Simply written, but enjoyable.

  6. Richard M. Jones

One of the best novels I have ever read. Ruiz defines metaphors. The book is throughly modern being metaphysical and existential in discovering self while investigating a mystery. The book begins with a visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and here is where the mystery begins. “The chairs stood in wake around the table.” is one of the many metaphors projecting this sense of ether-ness, an independent aura of influence, subtle and ever-present.

I bought this so I could read it for the second time – I highly recommend this for books that are really good. Second reading is more satisfying than the first. The intricate plot, great characters, set in Spain post ww2 and begins in a large below ground book storage facility/Store featuring rare books. Underground to protect from war damage.Protagonist is the son of the owner of this collection who begins the novel in early adolescence and proves to be likeable, intelligent and interesting. This is a lengthy book – the best kind when they’re good. I felt like I moved into the story right at the beginning. I slowed down as the end approached because I didn’t want to leave.

  8. Thomas Orput

I love a great mystery / historical fiction because of the chemistry blend of past people and events coupled with an engaging yarn.Shadow does that from page 1 until the end.I am super excited about a trip to Barcelona one day.Thank you!

The book is magnificent. The plot is well thought and captivating, it gets you hooked up from the first page and doesn’t let you put it away until you are finished with the story; characters are well-described and authentic. I wanted to reread it even before I was done with the book and I gave 4 stares omnly because it’s the series and I’m still not done.

  10. elizabeth o'mara

This was beautifully written with well-chosen words which provided both a visual and an emotional connection to the characters and plot. I consider the writer to be in a category all by himself. Even though it was a lengthy book, it provided much enjoyment. I felt quite satisfied after reading it.
