One of the more monotonous fe games but still a classic. Gameplay is great but character interaction is meh

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is an RPG that’s long on strategy, short on story. But, for the DS, that may not such a bad thing. The storyline traces the travails of young Prince Marth, orphaned when his home is invaded by the forces of the titular Shadow Dragon. Marth must rebuild from an almost friendless youth to a young warrior who can liberate not only his own country, but those of his allies as well. The gameplay will be familiar to those who have played previous FE games; you take turns attacking the enemy, while trying to recruit new members for your ragtag army who have been forced or tricked to fight for the bad guys. Unfortunately, if any of your party members die, they’re dead for good – a remarkably realistic concept for an RPG! So, planning your attack, based on your strengths and weaknesses, is essential in getting your party through in one piece. It sounds simple, but I found it easy to lose oneself in the tactical and logistical planning required. While not full of some of the twists and character interplay of the console games, it’s a satisfying brain teaser with just enough personality to keep it from being an entirely intellectual pleasure. Definitely worth a buy if you like strategy games.

Bought as a present so I havent played this, though my son has been very quiet and focused, so it must be good for him!

This game is a classic, and anyone who is familiar with the Fire Emblem series need not even take heed of this review. A solid game for the DS, it contains all of the difficulty of the original game, and all of the annoyances. Dead party members are DEAD, no bringing them back. This can get frustrating, as it changes the course of the story if certain characters die, and in some cases, it is nearly impossible to keep them alive. The battle is intuitive and fun. It plays like a SRPG with an almost rock-paper-scissors feel to it. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is a fan of this genre of game, but be prepared for a lot of head banging and DS-throwing.

A brilliant turn based game… can be replayed over and over always good fun. Easy to play but can be challenging if you want to consider strategy …

i have been a fan of fire emblem ever since it hit the states. this game was great and enjoyed every minute of playing

  9. Mike

I have played every Fire Emblem released in the US so far and this is my least favorite one. Not that it’s not fun, because it definitely is. It’s a very good game actually. It’s just the least fun Fire Emblem I’ve played. The story is the weakest one yet, the maps feel barren, and the difficulty is probably the easiest one so far. The core mechanics are in tact and work as well as ever, however. I definitely feels like a Fire Emblem game, so there’s that. It’s still compelling enough to go through and from what I understand it’s a remake of one of the earlier Fire Emblems never released outside of Japan. Overall a very good game despite feeling weak in an already fantastic series.
