I was really excited at the prospect of an Iron Man movie, but worried it’d be overloaded with SFX or that the character wouldn’t work. I raised an eyebrow when I heard Robert Downey was playing Tony Stark, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Last time I did that, it was when Michael Keaton was cast in the first Batman movie. In both cases, my doubts were groundless. This movie is, in a word, superb. Usually I won’t say that, especially about a modern SF film. This time, they got it absolutely right. The pacing is perfect, the characters are actually developed well, the story is well adapted to the 40+ year Iron Man mythos, and the SFX are used to support the story. Usually it’s the other way around, with the effects totally overwhelming the rest of the film in order to please fanboy types and kids who just want eye candy. While the film is generally very serious, there are nice touches of both humor and romance. The supporting characters and actors — and I mean ALL of them — are excellent. Downey’s characterization of Stark, and the gravitas he brings to the character once he realizes what his company has been doing with its weapons, is absolutely spot on. Jeff Bridges is perfect as Obadiah — as callous a villain as ever walked the earth. Many film companies still seem to think all you need in any science fiction film are blinking lights, big explosions, and female characters in tight spandex. That’s what Gene Roddenberry ran into when he tried to make the orig.

So I am the only woman in a house of boys and men. As you can imagine, superhero stories are all the rage in this house. Not only does my husband take everyone to the movies when they come out, he buys all of them on blu-ray so they can watch them ad nausea afterwards. I’ve resisted their urging to participate in all this craziness. Until now. The boys insisted I go with them to Iron Man III. I said I couldn’t because I hadn’t watched the first two, expecting that to solve the issue. I was mistaken. After a week of hounding, I finally agreed to watch the first two so we could go as a family.I was surprised to find myself completely engaged and entertained. Robert Downey Jr. has created a character who is egotistical and self-centered, yet intelligent and worthy of your respect. If you’ve watched him in the Sherlock Holmes movies, you’ll find similarities. I found those equally entertaining.Of course what we used to call "special effects," before they became a standard Hollywood tool, are key to telling the story. I sometimes feel as though Hollywood relies too much on the digital world but in this case, they are not so much an addition to the story, but central to it.If you are looking for great film-making, you might peruse some film festival winners instead. However if you want a few hours of fun to escape reality, this is a great choice.

After twelve years, I think this is still the best of the MCU. I love some of the others, for sure, but the stars aligned on this. Jon Favreau was given the reigns, fought for them, and delivered the best superhero origin story, in my opinion, on film. It works as a stand alone or as the beginning to the biggest series ever. If the MCU just didn’t exist, this would still be a banner film in the superhero genre. As good as Superman or Batman.

Ah, Robert Downey Jr, you are the absolute perfect man for the role of Iron Man. Excited to finally have my hands on a digital copy of this; I think it is going to be me and Robert Downey Jr tonight for date night, since my husband is off doing his soldier thing. I love Tony Stark’s biting humor, his self-inflated ego and in the end, his understated vulnerability as a human. In reality, he’s the jerk that you can’t help but love. I’m usually not big on action movies or the comic book world, but Iron Man definitely pulled me in, so of course then I had to watch the Avengers movies and then I needed to know the stories behind the rest of the characters, so Iron Man was my gateway drug, per se, into the Marvel world.**I purchased the digital copy of this movie free using my No Rush shipping credits; however, I have owned a physical copy of this movie for several years**

I have never been a comic book guy, and super hero movies are seldom high on my “I got to see that” list. However due to the almost universal praise of this film by reviewers that I have come to trust, I gave it a try and got the retrolio Video on demand purchase last weekend. I got the Hulk on a rental for the above listed reasons, and quite liked it as well, and was happy I watched it first, to get the tie in of Tony Stark industries…In any case I watched it by myself first because my wife is really not a “Comic Book GUY” but I thought it was so good I asked her to watch it, and surprisingly she enjoyed it as well. So why does a comic book work as a movie? It is an interesting story about a life changing epiphany, and how the things you want, may not be the ones you need or love. It is an interesting story about the futility of bargaining with evil. And how any evil thing we do may come back to bite us in the backside, no matter the motives. Also… Iron man is a fun movie with wonderful CG’s a very cool visual experience. So, leave your disbelief at the door, and enjoy this very fun ride of a movie!4 1/2*

Iron Man will always go down as the film that started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It adapted the Iron Man origins story and his rivalry with Obadiah Stane from the comics. The theme was about whether Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) who was a playboy billionaire could become responsible and fulfill his potential as Iron Man.The film included much of the Iron Man legacy from Marvel. In the comics Iron Man was created when Stark was wounded by Communist guerrillas during the Vietnam War. Here they shifted that to the war in Afghanistan. The original Iron Man suit was big and bulky and grey and they represented that. Obadiah Stane was one of Stark’s great rivals who tried to destroy Stark Industries. Here Stane was Stark’s second at his company and worked from the inside against Stark. At the start of Iron Man Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) was his secretary and she’s included along with Jarvis who was originally the butler at the Avengers’ Mansion but here was turned into an intelligent computer program that assisted Tony. Finally, James Rhodey (Terrence Howard) was made into an Air Force Colonel when in the comics he was Stark’s best friend, pilot and eventually War Monger, but that would come later. The story came in three acts. First, it lays down Stark’s playboy lifestyle as he blows off an awards ceremony to gamble and sleeps with a reporter. That part ends when he’s wounded in Afghanistan. The second act is when he’s a prisoner of Raza (Faran Tahir) and his Ten Rings insur.

Good movie. I remember seeing it in theaters when it came out. Wow that was 11 years ago. Seems like yesterday. Saw Endgame and like many people discovered Ironman is no more 😥 so I had to buy it. 😠Thanks RDJ you did a great job as IRONMAN. 👊😎

This film, apparently thanks to Downey, takes itself just seriously enough.Stark’s conversion from being a rather thoughtless genius-billionaire weapons manufacturer to someone who wants to stop the psychopaths who make war on the innocent is the best part of the film (imo). But on a different axis the chemistry between Stark and Pepper, and the action humor is *also* the best part. Threatening his robot assistants, being bounced off the walls during testing, being targeted by USAF fighters, and what seems to be a tiny homage to the nominally-second Star Wars film produce a fair number of giggles.Unintentionally humorous I’m sure is that, despite the foreign locale nominally being Afghanistan, most of the Bad Guys with speaking parts appear to be speaking Arabic, not Pushto. I expect that’s why the script “explains” that the Bad Guys are really an international, multi-lingual criminal gang: they didn’t want Pushto-speakers convulsing in the aisles from laughter.I’ve watched it several times already; it’s a film that doesn’t wear out its welcome.

Even as recent as 2006, the super hero sub genre of film had been losing steam. X-men 3 ended up being a joke. Superman Returns was 40 minutes too long and ended up making him a confused and ineffectual moron with a school boy crush that has an illegitimate son. The Fantastic Four movies were too juvenile to be taken seriously and the lord of the new superhero generation, Spiderman, became a jazzy, emotional clown in Spiderman 3. Longtime and loyal fans were very upset and the uninitiated millions who did not keep up with comics were simply unimpressed. The start of 2008 brought uncertainty for future of these films. The first bastion of hope came in the form of a film adaptation of a rather unknown superhero. Ironman was the story of weapons developer Tony Stark who after receiving a near fatal wound in his chest, creates a super powered suit of armor that allows him to fly and shoot lasers. The teaser trailer to Ironman created a tremendous amount of buzz. Longtime fans were more than excited. They seemed to be almost transformed by the divine touch. Casual movie goers seemed also excited and wanted to finally learn of this strange unpopular character. But as is the usual order of the industry, a good trailer does not ensure a good movie. Some people were skeptical, others hopeful of the movies success and impact. By May of that year everyone got their answer. Ironman opened to world wide acclaim and critical praise. The movie was a qualified success and gave fans a new her.

2008 gave us three excellent superhero films: The Dark Knight, The Incredible Hulk…..and Iron Man. Director Jon Favreau truly did his homework while researching Marvel Comics’ high flying superhero, and it shows. I think i was one of the very few who thought it would be tragic if there were missteps to putting Iron Man to the big screen. I mean, for every Spiderman or X-Men 2, theres a Ghost Rider or original Punisher. But Favreau understood the appeal and complexities of billionaire Tony Stark, and took what was considered by some to be a second tier character and gave him three dimensional authenticity. For starters, lets not forget Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, who created Iron Man in “Tales of Suspense # 39” in the early 60s. Theirs is the blueprint from which this film sprang. It is soooo faithful to the origin of the character, despite modernizing certain elements, which i was totally fine with, since it made total sense: Instead of Vietnam, we see Stark captured in Afghanistan. Instead of a jungle warlord, we have members of a Taliban-type organization, yet the weapons manufacturing angle remains intact. We see Stark’s interaction and subsequent friendship with fellow inventor/prisoner Yinsen, well played by Grant Toub. The moment when Stark creates and puts on his original, bulky silver suit of armor had me grinning from ear to ear, blasting his way from captivityAs he returns to America, Stark, who was a munitions manufacturer for the U.S. military, decides.
