I guess I should point out that I’m a mid-30s guy who has been playing video games for three decades now. One of my first video games was MegaMan 2 on the NES.So, inevitably, I was going to like this game. I love MegaMan. It’s had its ups and down, but the series is sold, the formula is tried and true, and it’s hard to screw up a game like this. This one didn’t disappoint — I had a lot of fun with it. The gear system is an interesting twist without being hamfisted — it’s useful in a lot of contexts but rarely feels necessary. I also really like that it’s the kind of thing your remember just as you’re getting frustrated, but it’s not a very abundant resource, so you can’t just flip the easy-mode switch and stroll through the game.Honestly, this game is good, and you should get it.But that said, I have some very criticisms. First, the irrelevant, superficial complaint: I’m not a fan of the friendly, bubbly, cartoony look. I like the 8-bit graphics, and I liked the grown-up looking X in the SNES games. Every single thing is this game just seems like it’s a polished piece of kid-friendly shiny plastic.Second, the more substantive complaint: I didn’t think it was as much of a challenge as it should have been. I’m not saying it was easy, but compared to MM 9 and 10, this one wasn’t too tough. Some of the boss weapons also felt kind of gimmicky. If you know the old NES games, I was hoping for MM3 and instead got MM4 — it’s fun and I’m glad I picked it up, but this one is just anot.

As a life long player of Megaman games, I can say this is definitely one of the better ones. The gear mechanics are a ton of fun and very helpful once you get used to them. Weapon power ups also vary from each other and have actual use. Character designs are great. Many difficulty options and ways to customize your playthroughs.

Plays like the Mega Man games of yore. Has easy through crazy hard modes so it scales for new and experienced players.

A good game, for sure. But I prefer the PS4 version.
