An amazing read that captures excitement, sadness, humanity, and the pure will to live. There were moments in this book where you couldn’t help but feel as if you were standing next to these men, watching them go through mental and physical challenges that would asunder any normal human being. The toughness and will of the group held them together through multitudes of dangerous situations and it’s all laid out in a gripping read by Buddy Levy. I would suggest this book to anyone.

  2. AdrienFerry

The book was adventurous, but factual and well-researched.

  3. john gibbs

Absolutely great book. Everyone in my book club loved it. A somewhat forgotten part of American history brought to life in a way that keeps the reader hooked.

  4. Jared Bowling

Fantastic story that is articulated and visualized very well. Levy does a great job of making you feel present during these events.

A truly inspiring book I couldn’t put down! The voyage and bravery of these men is something that should be told! So glad I picked up this book. So sad when I finished!

Excellent book on the subject material. While I am severely limited in my exposure to historical narrative writing I feel this author could take any story and make it interesting. The style is wonderful and though I knew from the beginning how the expedition ends, I could not help but find myself rooting for the men’s success.I would recommend for anyone interested in history or adventure stories.

Great epic true story. Amazing what the human physical nature and spirit can endure and accomplish

Great Read ! But there’s more . . . per Wikia, “In 2013, a comprehensive 17-page report on the history of Fort Conger was published in the journal, Arctic Institute of NorthAmerica.” Years following Greely’s abandonment of the settlement, Fort Conger, other intrepid polar explorers and expeditions utilized the wood constructed building for refuge, exploration, and scientific investigation. Canada now recognizes the outpost as Classified Federal Heritage Buildings for their historic value and interest. Buddy Levy’s narrative, fraught with the life threatening trials and tribulations of those involved in the Labyrinth saga, gives existential witness to and is the epitome of the nature of the beast lurking in the North’s farthest and most frigid polar region. An unfathomable, frozen abyss that challenges a reader’s grasp of what it must have been like for the men of Greely’s expedition.

To be quite honest, there are no words I could possibly write in my review to do this story the justice it deserves. This is a true life, epic and heroic, and heartbreaking telling of The Lady Franklin Bay artic expedition. A 24 man group of scientists and discovers who are led by one man, Lt. Adolphus Greely to reach as far North as possible and to study, chart, graft and record as much information about the area as possible while up there. The ultimate goal was to study the environment as well as the capabilities of the human mind and body to withstand such harsh conditions. What those men did and what they went through is beyond anything I could ever begin to imagine going through myself. This was the late 1800’s so they did not have the high tech clothes and equipment that are available today. This book takes you there right along with them. Even in my sometimes 85 degree apartment, I could still feel the cold. This story was written so intricately, as if the author is there on the journey with those men. You will feel the happiness and the sorrow, the disappointment and the utter joy and you will finish this story with so much more appreciation for what you have in your life. I will never again complain about my cheap, affordable 5 minute microwavable meals. Or if I do, I will no doubt think about Greely and his men. I will never go through another winter and feel the same way again because no matter how cold I might feel in a moment, I will never experience -35 degrees b.
