casey –
Incredible story that will keep you turning the page. Written in an informative, yet entertaining manner. A must read for adventure lovers.
J. Peterson –
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!In our modern world, with GPS and satellite mapping, it’s almost impossible to imagine the world as recently as the late 19th century, when both of the Earth’s poles had not been reached and much of the polar territory was a total mystery that could only be painfully “discovered” by human exploration. This book of one of the many stories about the latter – full of human endeavor and drive to further mankind’s knowledge of the Earth.Adolphus Greeley was one of the many who attempted to push ever further northward. And one of the many whose expeditions came to grief in an almost predictable pattern, even though in this case, a few did survive after years of privation and struggle. This is a factual historical account, but despite that, in reading this account one keeps hoping that the eventual outcome will be better – yet inevitably, it doesn’t. The story is told in a very compelling and readable manner, and although I have read many books on polar exploration, this is one of the best I have had the pleasure to spend the time with.If you like to read about polar exploration, or humans pushing to the limit, or how humans can actually endure the unendurable – this is the book for you! (as it was for me)
