I wish they remade more classic Game Boy games, but if I had to choose one, I’m glad it was this one. Since the original Metroid II is one of my all time favorites, I only wish it had been remade sooner! Not only are my favorite elements here, there are new features and abilities I could never have dreamed of. Nintendo could have lazily rehashed elements of Metroid: Zero Mission, but instead gave us a 3D side scroller that feels modern and also ties in with the Metroid Prime series, and still feels like a 2D game. The analog control is great, especially using the ability to freely fire in any direction. Overall I find it challenging but fair, and this is a killer addition to the 3DS library, possibly the swan song of the system? Let’s hope not, but if the system ended on this note, I would be ok with it.

Simple, if you play the game for 3 hours without noticing it, you are on the right track. The mechanics are simple yet engaging, somehow they took notes on avoiding boring backtracking with nice puzzles and destroying enemies to discover secrets via scanning. I do not know how long the game is but after a day, it is rocking.

The 3d graphics on this 2d game are unwelcome, but developers can’t seem to help themselves. The control is good. It feels quite loose, especially as options open up: Makes me wish that I had a real controller in my hands. But it can be adjusted to. Actions that were tricky in previous Metroid games are pretty smooth, like switching between weapons and even bomb jumping. I like the use of the touch screen for using weapons – lots of controls! The progression of weapons and abilities feels a bit fast, with the wall clinging ability of the ball coming up quickly, so things like bomb jumps seems worthless at first. But there are little tricky parts where a combination of skills is important, like clinging to a ledge to switch to shoot a regenerative block then falling into ball form to cling to the opposite wall, or freezing an enemy to stand on them lock your weapon switch to missiles on a regenerative block… Again, wish I had a better controller. There is very little time wasted spent farming to regenerate or exploring. Objectives are clear and I’ve been blazing through. Only a few hiccups along the way: At one point, for example, the graphics made spotting a ceiling exit difficult. There are explanations for power ups, but no real explanations of anything else in the game. Encountering the electrified attack of a metroid stumped me at first. All the populations of enemies are unique, and must be dealt with differently. Getting used to the new mechanic, the shield, is a must.

Samus Aran is back and kicking ass in 2D. This is a remake of Metroid 2 on the Gameboy and it’s had a huge update to graphics as well as mechanics. A lot of fun, a lot of surprises, and the story made me like Super Metroid even more.

Metroid II: The Return of Samus is mostly fondly remembered for it’s fantastic ending that leads right into Super Metroid. There was more to the game at first. Being a Gameboy game it was actually quite an impressive feat and managed to evoke some real classic Metroid tropes such as a great atmosphere and a sense of being lost. Unfortunately, the original Gameboy game hasn’t aged well and it’s also rather difficult to find. This is where the remake Samus Returns comes into play. It’s a remake and an updated one. It takes the best of the classic 2D Metroid games and combines it with some of the finest qualities of Metroid Prime. The end result is perhaps the best Metroid game we’ve seen in a decade. The story in Samus Returns is pretty simple: Samus has destroyed Mother Brain and has now gone to the Metroid home world of SR388 to get rid of the Metroid menance once and for all. She will go to their homeworld and beging eradicating the Metroid’s one by one. But the deeper she gets the more dangerous it becomes. And in this remake she’ll run into some harrowing new dangers. The story is simple, but the fun of Metroid storytelling is seeing what unfolds in the story by what you discover as you explore. And there is plenty of that to do in Metroid Samus Returns. Metroid has never been that story centric, though. The most story focused game in the series (Metroid Fusion) ended up telling a GREAT story on its own, but the more story heavy a game is the more likely it is to be linear..
