NBA Baller Beats is an interesting game. It was designed of course to make you a better “baller,” but in the process you’ll find yourself having a lot of fun. As a veteran of past music genre games from Rez to Rock Band to Dance Central, I’ve grown extremely tired of the genre despite the number of quality offerings available. I decided to pick this up, simply for my love of sports and to see if the Kinect could properly track a basketball (an expensive risk I’ll admit).I can safely say that this is the best motion sports game I’ve played and I’m not even a hardcore basketball fan (although I do believe you have to at least LIKE the sport to enjoy this game). This is a game that rewards real skill and also builds skills if you are a novice (like I am). I have found that in the week or so of having the game that my handling skills have greatly improved and I’m able to dribble between my legs, do crossovers, and dribble without needing to look at the ball. Now I have played basketball years ago back in my middle school days but I haven’t really played outside of a game or two on a playground a year since. For those that do not know exactly what this game, I’ll try to explain it the best I can. Basically you are given a real basketball (it comes with the game but you can use any round bouncing ball if you wish) and you are challenged to dribble to a string of notes that come down ala Guitar Hero. You dribble to the rhythm of music and perform various moves to increase you.

Gave this to my son for Christmas and I don’t think he has stopped playing. Even my younger daughter is into it. Teaches some good ball handling and coordination.

I was surprised how well this game works. When I have friends over and show it to them they are pretty amazed at the concept. You have to know what you are getting yourself into though. This game will not work anywhere that you can’t comfortably dribble around a basketball. You need to be on a solid floor on ground level.I did minus one star because of some of the features. I’m about 5’10. I have almost an ‘idea’ place to play, but when they have moves like ‘jumping pump fake’ I can’t do it without hitting my ceiling. Also, some of the moves on the game like ‘pass’ or ‘pump fake’ can be done interchangeably in real life, but the game’s sensors aren’t accurate enough to differentiate between the two. Another example would be dribbling between your legs, and dribbling between your legs backwards. The Kinect and game software have a hard time recognizing the difference.Anyways, this game is really cool and will increase your handles if you play it often.

This was a gift for a 12 year old, and he was excited about it, and couldn’t wait to hook it up.

Challenging, it seems the sky’s the limit on how good you can get! Very impressed with XBox kinect on this game – as well as others.

This is a great game for anyone about 6 and up who has decent coordination. I am not a basketball player and my skills are terrible. I do play and coach a lot of soccer, and my kids (7 year old boy and 11 year old girl) play a lot of soccer and are very good. But my wife, who played basketball insists that my kids play at least one season of basketball every winter (the other season is dedicated to indoor soccer). It has been painful at times for me to watch my kids go from being either the best or one of the best on a soccer field to being one of the weaker players at basketball. They simply haven’t had much interest in practicing basketball (even during basketball season my kids tend to play soccer with me on days they don’t have basketball practice). However, being the fair minded parent that I am, I pointed this game out to my wife and suggested we get it for the kinect. We got the Nike+ workout game for christmas and my kids have actually enjoyed it. She was skeptical at first (concerns included: (1)you’ll break the TV; (2) it will be too hard for them; (3) there’s no way it would actually teach them anything useful), but eventually I won her over and we got this game a week ago. After one week, my kids love the game and their skills have increased dramatically. The first few songs they were lucky to get one star and the ball rolled around on the floor quite a bit. They both felt that it was slightly easier than guitar hero for them to learn. We limit their “screen time” to.

Excellent product. Very responsive to the ball movement. I don’t care about becoming a basketball player, but this game gets me and my kids off the couch. Kids can get pretty competitive.Luckily we have plenty of space in the basement. Next summer, I’m thinking portable projector and put it in the back yard (cement pad). It should be fun to call some kids from the neighborhood to play.Let’s hope they come up with more innovative kinetic games. So far, this one is a winner.

We can all debate whether NBA Baller Beats teaches real moves on the court (not sure when you’re going to perform a Backward Hopkins in a game), but there is absolutely one skill it trains you on… Keeping your eyes off the ball when you’re dribbling. Other than the skill of scoring, I don’t think there’s a more valuable skill than dribbling the ball effectively. There’s no way you can dribble effectively if you keep your eyes on the ball, because defenders will be on you so quickly if you don’t watch them all the time (much less find the open teammate). Before NBA Baller Beats, you can try to learn the dribbling skill in real games if your teammates let you. Of course, people who play basketball are competitive so you’ll likely not going to have that much of a chance if you start turning the ball over. Or you can bore yourself by dribbling in an empty court. Baller Beats allows you to practice in a fun, non-hostile (competitive) environment. If you use the game in a carpeted room, buy one of those bouncier kick-balls at the toy department. It’s a little smaller than a regular basketball, but will bounce like one on carpet and create less noise for your downstairs neighbors. A real basketball can’t bounce on carpet well. I wish you could buy more songs or more skill moves, but I heard the game hasn’t sold as well as expected.

I was skeptical of two things, would it really help dribbling skills and would my daughters like it? The answer is a resounding YES on both questions. For those who haven’t seen the product, it is like Guitar Hero with a basketball. There are two "lanes" coming at you and you dribble when the ball hits the bottom of the lane. There are additional moves like crossover dribble, through the legs, etc. The really cool thing is your kids almost instantly learn to dribble with their heads up! No more looking at the ball while dribbling. It took my 6th grader a little longer to warm up to the game, but now she is a fan too! Absolutely no regrets and would highly recommend this for any family with basketball players.
