I have never played guitar but never had the confidence in my commitment to get a teacher or even really look into starting. When I saw the Rocksmith videos on YouTube I decided it was time to give it a shot. On the surface its basically like Guitar Hero/Rockband except instead of playing a fake guitar and learning a made up note pattern you are actually learning to play a song on a real guitar. In 2 months or so of playing around an hour a day I’ve gone from literally slamming my hand on the guitar to being able to play mos of a couple of songs. Its not perfect. It can be frustrating sometimes but thats normal for learning an instrument. The song DLC is plentiful. Some of the songs are amazingly complicated and daunting. It could probably benefit from having some more classic songs instead of a lot of the bands I’ve never heard of. I’ll admit I’m old and don’t know all the new bands but some of these tracks have to be pretty obscure unless you’re in college. All in all, its been good. So good I bought it again for my Mac so I can practice when I’m not near the xbox.

I’m 52 years old, left handed and have NEVER played guitar in my life, but always wanted to. I got an electric guitar for a gift and bought Rocksmith for myself. I’ve have had it for less than a month now and am very pleased with the progress I have made. The lessons are very simple to understand and follow. I love the way Rocksmith starts you off at one level and adjusts to your ability. Slower or faster, simpler or more complex. As you progress, it progresses, if you need more work, it slows down for you. The best part of all is I can practice when I want, for as long or short as I want. Twice a day, twice a week, it’s up to me and the game never complains! Trust me, this game has more patience than any human teacher could and is ready to pick up where we left off when I am. I highly reccoment this game for anyone of any age (righty or lefty) any experience level. If you want to play guitar…get this game!

I’m conflicted about how many stars I should give this game. As for the game itself, we love it! My two oldest boys and I have been playing it almost every day since we got it. We even bought an inexpensive bass guitar and another cable so we can play two-player. The game is a lot of fun and I do think it can teach you many of the basics of playing guitar and develop some of the ‘mechanics’ of playing. Playing the songs is, of course, fun (and it doesn’t force you to play songs you don’t want to), but the ‘arcade’ games are fun and helpful, too, teaching the fretboard, chords, and scales. The only downside is the connection to the Ubisoft servers. It worked flawlessly for the first few days we had it, but we’ve been unable to connect to the servers for many days in a row now. I’ve just spent a few frustrating hours last night and this morning trying to figure out the problem and have not been able to. Ubisoft support, while prompt, has been less than helpful. There are two reasons you’d want to connect to the servers, to use their Uplay service to track progress and to purchase new songs to learn. Fortunately, you can apparently buy songs through the XBOX Live store as well, which is what I was looking for. I don’t care so much about the online tracking of my progress…So, 5 stars (easy) for the game, drop one star (and maybe more) for the issues with connectivity and support.

I’ve played guitar for several years (20) and then stopped for whatever reason for about 10 years. I’m now getting back into it and loving it even more. That said, I purchased this product to make re-learning more fun and to change things up a bit. I am ending up using it a lot more than expected, it’s really a lot of fun and has improved my playing. Be advised that in some cases you may need external audio (surround system or other sound source) in order for it to work properly. Luckily mine seems to work fine plugged into the HDMI port on my TV.

I’ve been trying various methods of learning guitar — iOS apps, YouTube videos, Hal Leonard books…but nothing kept me motivated like this game.PROS:1) Plays at your level — if you’re struggling, the app plays the riff slower. As you get better, more note complexity is added.2) lots of lessons offered. Lessons are broken down into college course numbers, i.e., you should finish all the 100 courses before moving on to the 200s. Lessons are kept short with emphasis on practice.3) Riff-repeat mode is outstanding. Optionally, a section of a song will repeat if you make any mistakes — allowing you to "nail it" before moving on. This is one of the best features of the app.CONS: (no software is perfect — I develop software, so I should know)1) needs more music (more variety) and downloaded music should cost less. $12 for 3 songs is pretty steep.2) Doesn’t teach you how to read music or tablature. When you play for real, you will struggle when switching to sheet music and keeping proper tempo may be difficult as well, since the app keeps you at the right tempo. I highly recommend practicing with sheet music in addition to Rocksmith to avoid these problems later on.

Our household has two people using Rocksmith 2014 – myself with 19 years experience (albeit a very interrupted 19 years) and my 13 year old son with less than one year experience.Rocksmith 2014 works great for both of us. The difficulty adjusts on the fly depending on the skill displayed by the player. It can also be adjusted manually. The ‘101’ training lessons are great ways to learn essential guitar techniques and include training tracks with feedback, increasing difficulty, and scoring.Learning songs consists of applicable ‘101’ lessons, replaying of certain song sections and riffs, and the familiar graded accuracy and note streaks. The variety of songs that ships with the product is excellent and many more high quality songs are available as DLC (I’ve bought a few already). The DLC songs are of the same great quality as the included songs.Rocksmith 2014 offers bass, lead guitar, and rythm guitar. We have not tried bass, but my son plays lead while I chose rhythm and those definitely are very different from one another. The guitar tuning can be picky at times, but once you figure out how to tune the way the program likes it, it ceases to be a problem. The difficulty of songs scales very well for both lead and rhythm. A beginner rhythm player would start out with chord root notes played every measure or every other measure and slowly work their way up via power chords, A5 chords, complete chords played once per measure, and then increasing in frequency until the song is.

This really is a wonderful product. I can’t say that it will teach you to become an epic lead guitarist, but it does wonders for improving familiarity with the guitar and helps improve dexterity and rhythm. My only complaint with the product is that while it does change its difficulty level based on how you are doing, the jump between levels seems a bit large. You’ll start off plucking the top two stings, having a great time and doing well, then suddenly, it’ll start throwing really obscure chords at you, so it can become overwhelming really fast. I wish you could enter in which chords you know, and which chords you want to learn next and have them introduced to you in a more methodological way.All in all, I still give this product five stars, because as a brand new player, it can get really discouraging plinking my way through songs that I really don’t much care for, Rocksmith allows me to still play guitar, but play songs that I totally love.

I’m reviewing this after only playing it for a total of 3 hours, and I think I love it enough to warrant 5 stars (even if there are a few faults).Be aware that the game does warn you with a piece of documentation that there’s a possibility of audio lag, and the solution is to use non-HDMI cables (the ones that come with the system) from you 360 and route the left/right channels through a separate audio system (or to headphones using a y-cable). I ignored this warning and play the game using optical-audio (which they say also suffers from lag), and I found the lag to be fairly unnoticeable. Now, I’d consider myself somewhere between a beginner and novice. I can play "rhythm" and understand certain scales (but don’t know how to use them). I’ve also played other games like Guitar Hero and Rockband, so the formula of these music games is not lost on me.Though this game purely succeeds for the reason that you’re actually LEARNING guitar, and not just learning to play 5-buttons on a plastic controller. The time you devote to this game, as long as you’re keeping up with and taking away from it, will earn you actual guitar-playing skills. That along is worth 5 stars.Time to throw out the old guitar books.

I bought this as a fun little way to learn more songs. I’ve played guitar for 12 years, and I consider myself to be an "advanced" player. It did what I wanted it to. I learned some songs, I learned parts of songs that I couldn’t figure out how to play, and some of the educational tools were good for learning things that I, as a self-taught musician, hadn’t quite figured out yet.As for using the game for almost purely learning purposes, it’s pretty good at that too. My friend wanted to learn how to play the bass, so he bought a bass. I taught him some basics, but there’s only so much I can do without taking a lot of my own time, and his, to teach him how to get going. I let him borrow Rocksmith 2014. He played it for a couple weeks, and there was an insane amount of improvement. What took me a year to learn on the bass, took him less than a month. A year later, and he hasn’t played Rocksmith in a while, but the basics and fundamentals it did teach him have helped him on his way. It’s no longer painful to sit there while he just plays around on his bass.

First of all, some background:I have attempted at least 3 times in my teenage to adult life to learn guitar without the money to hire teachers. Now that I have the money, I don’t have the time. I am actually a self-learner so loathe to get actual teachers anyway, so I specifically looked for this product for the motivation. Here’s what I suggest if you are considering this product:- You’re serious about learning.- Lose all illusions about learning how to "play" the guitar in 60 days. You will sound like the real thing but if you truly want to learn, you will have to do this outside of Rocksmith.- You are a self-learner.- You have at least two life-time or pro guitar players to ask stupid questions like "my callouses came off in the shower, what do I do?" And "do you alternate pick?" I have the supreme fortune of knowing a professional guitar player who is good enough to earn a living off of playing the guitar.- You supplement with other lessons and practice some arpeggios outside of the game. You will NEED SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS AND LESSONS.- You have to be extra careful not to develop horrible habits while playing the game, because it will not guide you very well on finger placement, technique, etc. Consult guitar friends and online resources. LEARN SOME MUSIC THEORY. You will need to know scale, pitch, and the relationship between notes.- Don’t be antisocial. Sign up for the Rocksmith forum and also get a Raptr account that tracks how long you spend.
