What a fabulous show! Just finished watching all seasons over a few weeks and it is just so overwhelming good! Not an episode is watched without shedding a tear or two and, I can honestly say, we became very involved in DB’s storylines. All the good things I’ve heard and read about DB are absolutely true. Every character is so well done from the Dowager (no shrinking Violet, here!) all the way down to Isis. Poor, sweet Isis… We are so very unhappy to be finished watching the seasons and can’t wait for season 6 ;although we are dreading the end of our wonderful escape into bygone times in one of our favorite places.

Does it really matter what I say? Downton Abbey is loved the world over. I will miss it when it’s gone. As an American I consider it lucky that the Brits let it ride this long. Six episodes and out seems to be the preferred form in England. Maybe they have something there. Leave them wanting more. I think maybe Downton Abbey may have struck the right balance. Any more and I might be reluctant to see these wonderful actors in other roles. A death sentence they don’t deserve Downton Abbey has been an amalgam of superb acting, lavish sets, (uhh, Highclere castle),meticulous attention to detail and most importantly, but maybe overlooked, some insight into the British Empire and it’s history, ( Americans pay close attention). If we can handle the changing times with as much grace as the Crawley family, maybe we will be okay. This brings me to the writer and creator, Julian Fellowes. I probably should have started here, but being ignorant of the processes that lead to a marvIelously successful series I may have unintentionally overlooked Him. Life is not fair. I do know that I will be watching Gosford Park, which I’ve been interested in in the past. Now even more so. Now that I have gone on and on after stating that it doesn’t matter what I say, I want to say that I think Downton Abbey may be more than just a wonderful production with all the right elements. I think it may be a partial look into England’s past and America’s future. Nobody gets to be on top foreve.

Really a great show! I was skeptical and my husband moreso but I decided to give it a try while he was at work. He came home while I was watching episode 3 of season 1 and after 15-20 minutes he asked if I would mind starting over again with episode 1 so he could watch it too. We were both immediately hooked and had a marathon week-long binge of it every chance we got. Super quality TV, fairly family friendly, addressed some major social issues of the period. In fact, the show was all about addressing social issues but cleverly done in a way that highlighted the perspectives of both sides on every topic and didn’t really vilify either. Some of the strongest proponents for both sides were also some of the most lovable characters which, imo, makes the writing very impartial. We were really bummed to see it end and still have conversations about the show and the characters a week later. Very thought provoking indeed.

I love Downton Abbey. I think it is at the very top of the heap. It is one of the best casts I can remember. The Brit aristocracy, to my recollections, has been vilified by so many writers, as if there were none of merit. I have regard for tradition when it serves a useful purpose, but I was never in the position of being pressured to maintain it because I was the successor. It brings to light the ambivalence of the peers in trying to keep what was entrusted to them while accommodating the political, social and financial upheaval going on around them. This resonates in the USA today as we grapple with the problems of refugees, national debt, countering the enemies we’ve made by our inept foreign policy and providing health insurance, educational opportunities and decent living conditions to our citizenry.

Once again, Downton Abbey does not fail to please. OK, the snobs have called it nothing but a "soap opera" in an historic setting. Perhaps so, but hardly ever has a "soap opera" been produced in such spectacularly beautiful settings both indoors and outdoors. Even the commoner cottages, with thatched roofs and small gardens, tend to be charming. About the only non-beautiful settings are the servants’ quarters and kitchen, and depictions of London roads. Having been studying WW-I recently it’s wonderful to watch the changes which it triggered, which upset cultures world-wide, depicted in a rather gentle fashion, as seen from an English "great house" that was getting by better than most. This story began well before the war, ran through it and ends season five somewhere around 1925. Who knows how far it will take us in history, but at least a season six is assured–as no doubt my watching it is, as well.

I’m enjoying season 5, but I am unclear whether the original UK version is longer or the US version. One reviewer stated that the opening of a scene when a teacher offered to teach the cook’s assistant for free was cut out of the streaming version. I just watched that episode (streamed UK version) and missed that part of the discussion. Another reviewer stated that the UK versions were fuller and that parts were cut out for American audiences. I sincerely wish that there was a definitive full-length version (like a "directors cut") that combined both versions and maybe even included other bits that were left on the cutting room floor. I’d pay money for that version of the entire show.

Downton Abbey is excellent……..but I’m very disgusted that they eliminate scenes from the DVDs that are on PBS. I record the series and have watched both and even though the scenes are not pivotal……they tie the scenes together and give a greater understanding of what is going on. I have noticed it in almost every season that I have watched…….comparing the PBS broadcast to the DVDS. Not sure why they do this…..they are not long scenes……..I also agree with the other review…….I have read where Season 6 might be the end of Downton…..but if they decide not to do Season 6………then they have tied almost everything up with Season 5 …… it certainly could be the end of the series…….I hope this is not the case…….I am looking forward to another season………actually many more…….but I think we are very close to the end of Downton Abbey…!

I watched this while doing not much else while recovering from a surgery. Downton Abbey, episodes 1 to 5 over the period of about six weeks as I recovered, then got stronger after surgery. Never imagined I would get so hooked. I found season 5 particularly interesting and well done with its (as always) multiple plots lines, many resolving satisfactorily. Both writers and actors showed increasing depth with the character; even some of the intentionally unlikeable characters showed their better sides. By the time I got to season 5 I was up and about and watching it the on computer screen as I did crafting (things they sell that raise $$ for the library). And for the first time I actually shed a tear or two over some moments. I was dreading this coming to an end. I already miss these people… the way you do when a great book ends. But you’ve gotten to know these people over years so even though it’s TV, you know them.

This is the best series ever!!!! Thank goodness retrolio offers it because, if my husband and I had to wait a week for the next episode we’d be devastated. We had seen all the five years worth of shows when they were on TV but we are watching them on retrolio Prime and find that there are many things we missed the first time around. We are glued to the TV for several episodes each night. Can’t get enough. ( Note: You really should watch from the very first episode in the first year. Don’t just start with a later season — you will miss SO much.)

I never thought I would enjoy a series as much as I do, Downton Abbey! The story lines move along quickly and with much interest, keeping the audience in suspense when it comes to your favorite characters. The meticulous costumes, staging, and reflection of a past-era is truly enjoyable. I just recently discovered Downton – watching every season with anticipation courtesy of retrolio Prime. I’ve digested this wonderful series all this past spring – limiting myself to the number of shows I watch – knowing the end is nearing soon. It’s like your favorite novel that you just can’t put down.Enjoy! And thank you to retrolio for offering all the PBS Master Theatre Series in it’s UK version for Prime Members.
