I didn’t start watching this series until recently. It just never interested me although I have a fondness for many British films. But some of my favorite TV shows happen to be HBO series, I have a hard time staying committed to prime time TV drama, they seem to get so far out there. One night I really wanted some television and I just didn’t want heavy crime, cursing or degradation. My son recent gave us a Firestick for Christmas and I decided to watch Downton Abbey. I watched all 5 seasons in less than 3 weeks. I absolutely love this show and the characters and the drama of the Crawley household. Watching Lady Mary evolve from a beautiful prude with a heckuva naughty side into a caring businesswoman and mother who the men fall head over heels for has been endearing. I have enjoyed learning about the traditions of the old English aristocracy, foolish as some of it seems, and viewing the lives of the servants who have their own drama. Everything is done so well, the music is befitting, the acting is outstanding, the drama believable, and the good guy usually wins. I regret that I had no interest in it earlier, but so glad I found it, I am hooked and will watch reruns for years to come. My only regret is that now that it is time to watch Season 6, I apparently have to pay extra for it. So instead for now I have gone back to Season one to take my time and catch all of the plots and nuances that I missed going through it so quickly.

Oh Lord, I had tried on episode and was not interested. A year later I thought to give it one more try. I started with episode 1 of season one through retrolio Prime. I hate to admit it, but I am hooked and enthralled. I find Thomas to be despicable and should be horsewhipped (applicable to the time) a tragedy that he survives. O’Brian left and it was one less viper in the basket. Bates with his in depth loyalty and dark side is marvelous. Edith who is searching for who she might be. Lady Mary with her soft aristocratic accent, I never thought I would warm to her but I have. This is an exceptionally well done series. It is well worth the time to watch. It is a wonderful cast, At the end of season 4 when all of the servants are at the beach, gently wading and enjoying the sand in their clothes. A reminder of how times were.If you enjoy a good story, wonderful characters, a fantasizing peak into the past with believable characters, take the time to enjoy Downton Abbey.

What can I say? Downton abbey is getting better every season. Not to be a spoiler, there are lot of surprises, lots of twists and turns…it is getting clear that show is coming to its end..sad but true..I wish it to go on forever…I did not like ms bunting and great to see her leave… Mr Branson maintained his grace,Lady marry in her own snobbish way could not steal any scene, rather housekeeping staff did..and the dog….he had his own place …what a wonderful writer, who gave importance to every character….well done. Looking forward to season 6

Season 5 is as 5-star excellent as the previous 4. Julian Fellowes is a true genius, having created Downton and each of its characters. His quality never flags. He has written the complete series. His characters each have such distinct personalities, good qualities and obvious flaws. However, and this is where so many authors fail, his characters are not one dimensional. You find yourself despising some only to feel later such empathy for them. Some, on which you are lukewarm, become ones you love. The staff who serve are among the most colorful and their lives are every bit as compelling as those they serve. All the characters continue to grow, some more willing than others to accept the changes occurring in England from the 1900’s through the 1930’s. The casting is also perfect. Just as one cannot conceive of anyone except Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh in Gone With the Wind, so it is with , Mr. Carson, Mary, Robert, Mrs. Hughes, Daisy and so many others which include the incomparable Maggie Smith as the matriarch, Violet. Please begin with Season 1. it will take you exactly 1 episode to be hooked and then, let the binge watching begin.

I have loved this historical drama from its very first season. This British PBS series transports you back to the early 19th century through its development of upper class British characters and their servants. The research that goes into accurately portraying of the mores, issues, and common dilemmas of the day comes through every episode. Throughout all five seasons, I found myself either cheering or crying through some of the more heart stopping scenes. Our characters, be he or she a noble person or part of the servant class, show us their resolve to push through. If you want to live vicariously through the difficulties and decisions men and women of the dividing (yet changing changing) classes were making based on their circumstances and what they perceived were society’s expectations, this is a series worth watching. The only downside is waiting for the next season to come around!

This was perhaps my favorite season, because so many outlandish mini-story arcs got introduced and then discarded like the issue of "Lady’s Sketch" that Cora, the simpering Countess of Grantham, is shown reading in the very first episode. I will provide no spoilers and encourage any of you reading this to discover the wonders of Julian Fellowes’s knack for delivering the implausible for yourselves. I will say this, though: I wish the series had gone on for a few more years. It ended just before the General Strike of 1926 and it would have been fun to see how Downton put up with that, and then the Depression, and then World War II, and the total post-war collapse of that whole way of life. If "Downton" bore any semblance to reality surely some of the characters would have been dead by, say, 1965, but given that the series started in 1912 and ended in 1925 or 1926 and no one seemed to have aged a day I’m sure they all could have lived on and been embroiled in the Profumo affair and maybe roll out the old Victrola to listen to a Beatles record.10/10, would watch again and again and again.

I just started watching this show and finished 5 seasons rather quickly considering work and family kept pulling me away (darn them).Okay, Ms. Mary, you can start liking her again and toward the end of the season, she might be forming something akin to a friendship with a female character. Up until then, I thought she only saw other females as rivals, and I still feel like but, I think that the timing is such that other women can recognize and at least understand her.Ana and Mr. Bates, it seems that they are always faced with struggle.Cora is ever the lady and I have decided that I want to be her when I grow up. She has so much love and understanding in her and she is never one to judge. Her spirit shines through in this season.Barrow is still Barrow but, OMG he has a bit of a soul that we can see in this season.Daisy finds strength, clarity and confidence and I have become so proud of the young lady that she is becoming.Mr. Carson surprises the crap out of me at the end of this season and it was such a long time coming.Rose’s energy is infectious and she never allows anything to dampen her happiness.Tom Branson makes a huge decision.Edith changes the lives of everyone in a good way.

We never watched Downton Abbey as it was being shown on TV, but a friend had the first 4 seasons and loaned them to us. We were hooked on the first couple episodes! What a marvelous story and interesting characters. My husband wants to hang the writer for all the intrigue and for getting us so involved with the characters that we watched as many as 3 episodes in one evening. We had to purchase the last 2 seasons for ourselves because we got so enamored of the story line we had to finish it off. Very well worth watching if you enjoy following a family and their everyday life trials and triumphs. If you ever watched the movie "Gosford Park", and enjoyed that, you will love Downton Abbey. *S*

We love this series, showing the transitions society has gone through since the early 1900’s. The characters are complex and believable, and the portrayal of life as it was back then, with the clear-cut rules for the different classes, is fascinating as it is a way of life that is no more. We like the way the show defines the expectations for the different classes, and how this is restricting and frustrating for each sector. And yet things are beginning to change drastically, making all classes unsure of the "new rules" and how to proceed in the face of the uncertainty. Of course, the show is basically about one family and the people who make up their household, and this family is basically made up of kind people who try to function with logic and fairness within the confines of their positions. Still, it is a fascinating look at a time gone by, and the story-lines are very engaging and complex.

The fifth season of Up and Downton Abbey proceeds quickly enough. I call this series The House of Many Changes. There are many story arcs here, some long, series long, some season long, and some that rise and fall within a show or two.The costumes and sets, including period cars, must have cost a fortune. We’ve been watching the Manor House six shows that is a reality show based on 21st C people living an early 1900 life of Edwardian England. The costumes on The Manor House may be authentic, but frumpy compared to those depicted on Down Abbey. The fashions are gorgeous and give an idea of the style of the time.I consider this period to be the height of modern history. Everything was changing. The Russian Revolution, the Irish uprising, cubist painting, atonal music, poetry, the arts in general, politics in general. The show emphasizes the changes from the 19th C before WWI to after. I would have loved to been alive then and witnessed it, were I to be well enough to do to appreciate it all. There are threats to the Crawley family keeping their estate together. Others fail. The series will end in 1925 and I cannot help but wonder how the family could survive 1929? That would make for an interesting addition to the show. At this point, PBS has cancelled season 7.We were sad to see the final show of season 6. Here at the end of season 5, we have a wonderful English Christmas. What could be better than that?
