I never played either game when it was on the PS2. I decided to give this game a shot. They are amazing. These games are not for everyone. Very little dialogue but the stories…I actually teared up near the end of one of the games. The sound tracks are amazing and the world will captivate you. When I beat the first colossus in SotC I actually felt guilty. No lagging. Great trophies to challenge you. For people who are big on graphics these are upscaled PS2 graphics. They look great for being about six years old. If you like adventure games do yourself a favor give this game a shot. Support this game so Team ICO will release The Last Guardian.

Either way, you should load your disc, pick ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ and lay back a bit, as it all starts “right” from there..The first string plays as the intro cinematic and choir starts. First few ten seconds, brief silence synchronizes perfectly with scenes. I knew it right there this must be something very special. The intro continues to impress me, the entrance to the forbidden land, the contrast between the two, the first view of the great bridge (I can’t help but think how on earth could anything build such thing of this scale, even with today technology). This large land is lifeless, yet beautiful in its way. You can go almost everywhere right after the start with your best and only companion, a horse named Agro. No music will ever play on your way to the Colossus, this emphasizes solitude atmosphere even further. Worry not you won’t miss the way (often) as your sword will mostly shows it, wherever sunlight can touch it.Riding Agro is much more like riding a horse (than any other games). You can kick him to run forward, steer left or right, slow down or stop (you can even do several stunts). But you cannot simply use Analog Stick to control his direction or speed directly (as in most other games). This could be annoying at times (to get him do exactly what you want). Why wouldn’t the game developer just let you control the horse directly (much simpler that way)? A well thought reason there is.. you will be experiencing this whole world from the protagonist’s sole pers.

Ico and Shadow of Colossus are quite exceptional. They’re concurrently beautiful and minimalistic. There’s not a whole lot of music, but when there is it is quite becoming. Not to mention, they’re poster children for the argument of video-games-are-art movement. They have also paved the way for other games, like Journey, to be accepted by the masses. And that’s quite a feat in a day where Call of Duty is the norm.I won’t go into too much detail here because chances are you already are familiar with these games or have heard about them.In Ico you take control of a little boy with horns cast away into a labyrinthine castle. You must escape this castle with a female, Yorda, who’s stuck in the same boat as you. All the while fending off shadow monsters who attempt to abduct Yorda. It’s an escort mission at its core.Shadow of the Colossus throws your character in a large beautiful but desolate land in an attempt to awaken an unconscious woman. (Love interest? Friend?) It’s just you, your horse and sixteen giant colossi. Beat all the bosses and you win.Minimalistic in concept, stunning in execution.Frankly, the games are better on this collection than their PS2 originals. These games were built for HD before HD was even a standard! I mean that in the sense of the scope and presentation of the visuals lend themselves quite well to large format TVs that have become more and more the norm than, say, a 32 inch tube TV that I originally played Ico on back in 2001.The remas.

I would rate this game a 4.5 since there is no .5 scale here, I am willing to give it a 5 for the two gems.ICO slightly disappointed me for it’s visual representation. I have to be honest, this does not look “that” better than it’s original PS2 version. Instead, the old ample feeling now becomes a little empty after the graphics remastering. I have to say I think they could have done a better job adding more details and texture. On the other hand, SotC managed to excite me once more. The boss fights are awesome up to nowaday standards. I won’t spoil it for you, one of the boss fight (hint: flying, sands) is the best I have encountered in my whole gaming career (yeah let’s call it a career).A lot of games in the new gen have been inspired by these two master creation. GoW, UC series, even games like LBP2 have their own reflection of the two games. ICO has brought the brilliant mode of AI computer co-op and deep relation between the player and an AI character. SotC shined with all original large scale magnificent boss fights. They are stunning. And over the top, you have two worlds that will put you in and make you feel.Must-buy if you are true gamer

I was going to purchase Shadow of the Colossus on PSN for $19.99, but was reminded by a friend to try to buy a disk when possible so I checked on retrolio to see if it was still available. This disk comes with both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, two major hits from Team Ico and Sony, now in full 1080p HD with optional 3D and a number of extras. Highly recommend these games, and this is a nice update if you have them or enjoyed them on the PS2.
