This is the third game in the Shantae series and, in my opinion, the best thus far. The story picks up where the second game left off, but knowledge of the previous games isn’t required to enjoy Pirate’s Curse.The player controls Shantae, a half genie who’s lost her powers, as she teams up with former nemesis Risky Boots to defend her hometown against the nefarious Pirate Master. The game mixes platforming and adventure game elements, as Shantae travels from island to island, fighting evil creatures, collecting items, and destroying the occasional old man.Pirate’s Curse is a pure joy to play, with smooth controls, a difficulty level that’s just right, a delightful cast of characters, hilarious dialogue, and awesome music. Beating the game unlocks "Pirate Mode," a new game + of sorts which allows you to start the game with all of the pirate gear so you can speed through subsequent playthroughs.For those who already own the digital version of the game (released in 2014), the only new feature on this 2016 retail release is a mini game called "Shantae Super Nab." The player presses the A button to send Shantae’s monkey form (one of her former genie transformations) back and forth between two trees to collect gems. It’s probably not worth double dipping for this alone, but the main game itself is definitely worth buying. One of the very best titles on the 3DS.

I’ll admit that this purchase was a no-brainer. Of course I’m happy with it. I’m such a big fan of Shantae and I had already played this game on PC and 3DS before finding out that it has a physical version. The game itself is a fantastic blend of metroidvania gameplay elements and Zelda-esque dungeons and progression all wrapped together in the delightful bow that is Shantae, one of my favorite game characters (and one of the cutest ones) out there. If you’re looking to get into Shantae, you might want to consider trying Risky’s Revenge first, but this one has more to offer and is not at all a bad place to start either if you think you’re ready. The physical game only really comes with the box, the game card, and a folded-up insert with a little information on it. This one came sealed but I just HAD to open it up and see. It wasn’t a bad price at all, especially for a brand new game. Also… Shantae in a pirate outfit… need I say more? ;)
