Korny but thoroughly enjoyed this show :-)

I fell in love with ‘The Gamers’ franchise back when ‘Dorkness Rising’ came out. I was really apprehensive about this film because the creators had decided to shift the medium from the table-top RPG to the card game world, which if I’m honest, I’m not really into. The first thing you have to take into account is that these movies are very low budget. They are bank-rolled by the fans for the fans, so you’re not going to find mega-spectacular CGI and make-up and all of that. It’s also a threequel. So, if you haven’t at least watched ‘The Gamers: Dorkness Rising,’ you are undoubtedly going to miss out on a few things because Joanne, Lodge, Gary, Leo, and Cass have a history. If you aren’t into the Con scene, this may not be for you. You kind of need to have at least a little bit of geek knowledge in order to follow along, but if you’re willing to take a chance, it’s actually pretty entertaining.

The simplest review I can write: I had just finished watching another movie and was about to go to bed when I noticed retrolio had recommended this. I decided to watch a couple of minutes just to see what it was like. I couldn’t stop watching it. Two and a half hours later I dragged myself off to bed, and I’m regretting my late night this morning, but I’m still excited enough about the movie to write this review while I suck down coffee and try to pull myself together. Now, the caveat here is this movie was essentially tailor-made for me. I game. I’m professionally interested in crowd-generated narrative and the possibility of building businesses around it, which is what the main plot of this movie is essentially about. I get most of the in-jokes. I even recognized an old friend in the background at GenCon.With that caveat, I recommend this to anyone who has any interest at all in learning about Con culture or the table top RPG and CCG gaming scenes, enjoys documentary-style film-making and can appreciate low-budget but clever and well executed FX. The plot and themes are extremely ambitious, mashing up enough compelling material for five movies in a way that adds to the whole rather than bogging things down. The script is great, the acting and directing are excellent, the characters are appealing and relatable. This movie is not perfect. There are a few major editing flaws and dropped/confusing plots that I suspect got added in the Extended Edition without being completely finis.

Brain killing…stupidly true, amazing if you want to LOL at your own "youth".

  5. Randy Charles Ford

Surprisingly complex and humorous. Does an excellent job of capturing modern non-video role-play Gaming.

  6. jchapman

A funny and charming look at the world of gamers and geeks.

  7. Wayne Wilkinson

May the geeks rejoice, a movie for us by us

  8. Tony

I’m so glad I discovered The Gamers series! This group and these movies are the best. Must understand nerd in order to appreciate the greatness of The Gamers.

  9. C. Petree

I’m not at all familiar with the gamer world but I still loved this flick. Super fun. Enjoyable performances.

  10. StahrChylde

Not nearly as good as Dorkness Rising, but still a very good movie. I like the storyline a lot and it’s a different twist from the other.
