    Fantastic!

Impulse purchase. Haven’t finished the game yet because I am a chicken. Fun and easy to control/learn. I haven’t been a fan since the beginning like a lot of people who have reviewed this are, but it has nothing to do with the original game which I downloaded on PS3. Graphics and controls have come a long way since then.

Summary:I love this series, and this game is no exception. I had a great time exploring this classic, unique psychological horror experience. It has loads of benefits working for it, but there are some production quality issues that just keep this addition to the Silent Hill series below par to the rest. Why I love this game:1. Visuals: Great graphics. Very appealing and unique style, especially for the psychological horror genre. Enemies are very realistic and creepy; fun to look at and fun to bash in. :)2. Music: Perfect. Memorable tones accompany the story progression, infusing it with emotional impact. Eerie tracks keep you on your toes during combat situations.3. Sounds: Great. Sounds match the enemies. Ambience works great to pull the game world together.4. Difficulty: Balanced for the player’s enjoyment. Plentiful weaponry and healing items counterbalance the more difficult aspects of the combat such as gripping enemies.5. Story: Great psychological horror thrill. Most of the gameplay is tied into the grand story in the game. Story progression is slow enough to spark curiosity, but fast enough to retain interest. Being a prequel, this game is very much tied into the future of the Silent Hill series. Why I hate this game:1. Controls: Generally fine, but there are three serious hang-ups: (a) slow button response, (b) difficult to perform ‘finishers,’ and (c) investigation/attack button overlap.(1a) The slow button response I found to be really annoying..

Or at least that’s what you’ll think when playing, the PS2 version at least. I won’t tell you the story because that’s been said. The controls and camera angles are what you’d expect from a Silent Hill game and if you’ve never played one before I’d suggest starting with 2 or 3 ( or the original I guess, if you’ve got a PS1 lying around.) The graphics are pretty bad most of the time. The video scenes in the very begining and end of the game show how good they could be, but the developers either couldn’t fit that good of graphics throught all the scenes or were just lazy. The music is as good as always and Akira Yamaoka is truly a master at capturing the essence of Silent Hill in his music.I found the story to be pretty linear considering how good SH2’s story was, and the game was short. The Butcher came off as a cheap immitation of Pyramid Head of SH2. He was more violent than scary and was only given two instances of screen time. He doesn’t come off as a big deal in the grander scheme of things. And although Origins had a few fairly memorable scenes, they seemed to not linger around long enough to make an impact. But it seems like I’m complaining a lot which is weird because I really DID enjoy the game. I would say number 2 and 3 are better, but this one isn’t bad. It held true to the Silent Hill formula while still adding a few elements (portals to the Otherworld; breakable weapons) and I liked the changes in the firearms used. The rifle shoots much more quickly than.

Considering that this game came over from PSP to the PS2 it is a brilliant achievement of complete creepiness. The incorporation of the the mirrors which flip you between Normal World and Evil World is excellent. I physically felt dread as I touched that mirror in anticipation of Evil World. So dark that it is sometimes difficult to see, the strained eyes are worth it. I vastly prefer playing without the visual noise filter (which you can only turn off after beating the game). If you are a fan of these games, I consider this a must.

Fans of the series should obviously pick this up just for the whole history of Silent Hill thing. Konami has always had great graphics in the series, and while these are not as good as say Silent Hill 3, they are certainly decent and sufficiently creepy. This is a better looking port than say Liberty City Stories….The controls are about the same as the previous PS2 games, but do require a little more patience to get used to. I got some good scares and plenty of chills from this game, and some interesting plot points are revealed. Many people don’t want to go back to PS2 now that everything is Next Gen; But I have to say for fans especially, it’s worth dusting off that old console and popping this in. And yes, there’s fog!

Another PSP to PS2 conversion, Silent Hill Origins is a prequel to Konami’s original Silent Hill game, and fans of the long running survival horror series will happy to know that this installment retains the series’ penchant for the unbelievably creepy. You play as a trucker named Travis, who has just stumbled into the town of Silent Hill, and naturally, it isn’t too long before some very, very, bad things start happening. Fans of the series will see some familiar faces and surroundings, and the game also manages to provide some ultra-creepy environments and events, as well as a spectacular musical score that perfectly underlines the frightening proceedings. The game has been slightly visually enhanced in its transition from the PSP to the PS2, although things still look more grainy then they should. The only downsides to Silent Hill Origins is that the game’s camera doesn’t always work the way you’d think it would, and the game’s length may leave more to be desired. Flaws aside though, Silent Hill Origins is still a scary blast, and there’s enough extra content (like different endings) to find and comb through to justify picking it up. If you already played through the PSP version of the game, there really isn’t any reason to play it again, but if you didn’t and you’re a fan of the series or of survival horror in general, take a trip to Silent Hill.
