I bought a Japan version of this last December. It is a very cool piece of gear no doubt about it. However, once again sony seem to be missing the boat. This would have been a knock out if they had designed it to allow seemless and simple transfer of video. They should have also designed it to accept flash memory. If Archos can do it why can’t Sony. The idea that we are all going to start buying UMDs as the primary medium for video content is something dreamed up by some pencil pusher in accounting. Morevover, the idea that I am going to buy memory sticks for all of my media content is similarly displaced.Accordingly I am giving this a 4 on the basis of its design as aportable gaming platform.PS: I have looked at the posts on various hacks to get PSP to do things that SONY should have designed into the unit. Their design team should take a look at this and learn what people want.

I fell in love with the PSP after my cousins received one for Christmas this year. The PSP is a Jack of all trades system games, movies, music, pictures and web browsing all in a relatively small package. The graphics looks top notch, some have commented they are some were above PS1 and below PS2 and I’d have to say I agree. The screen is large and sharp movies and games look suburb. For a little less than the price of the newest ipod you can get a PSP and a 512mb SanDisk memory stick duo which should be enough room to put on a full length film or 3 or 4 episodes of your favorite T.V. program. The built in Wi-Fi is also a bonus, you can surf the net on the built in web browser, web pages display perfectly on the PSP’s high resolution screen. The built in Wi-Fi also allows you to challenge people from all over the world in your favorite games. If your a Tech Nerd like me and want something that can do it all the PSP is for you, if your a 10 year old kid go get the DS this machine is way to expensive for a beater system for small children.

Let me start out with I am a portable gaming machine. I commute over 2 hours each day sometimes 4-6 hours. So portable gaming is a way for me to forget about the hussle. I got the PSP when it came out, and I must say it is all that, a bag of chips, and a pickle. However the unit does have flaws. I do NOT have a single burnt out pixel on my unit. However the UMD drive door does not fucntion cleanly (it sticks, etc.) Now aside from horrendous battery life (I reccomend buying the power block for an extra 4 hours of play, or 2 recharges to your PSP), a broken door, and what to me seems like they spaced out the buttons to far (I actually use my index finger vs. my thumb to press the triangle key) despite these very minor flaws, if you want or need a unit that can blow away your imagination, this is it! The product has the best screen I could ever imagine on it, I feel like I am looking at a 60″ screen sicne I have to turn my head left and right to see on the sides of the screen. But in my opinion rivals an xbox on graphics it really is that good.dead pixel people; Buy the extended service warrenty, and if it has burnt pixels, drop it a few times, and get a new one. NOT ALL UNITS have this problem.

On 3/24/05 I picked up my PSP along with Ridge Racer (highly recommeded launch title). My PSP included the Spiderman 2 UMD and sampler UMD disc. On to the system it took about 2 hours (roughly) after charging it I was blown away with graphics that are near or on par with the PS2 system. Setting up the system was no ptoblem I didn’t bother reading the manual only the quick reference guide but that was enough onfo for me anyway. It can do a few things that the DS can’t play movies (UMD format) play MP3s and store photos. I wasn’t completely blown away with the music playback on the psp but I have an Ipod for music. The standard 32MB memory card (which was really meant for game saves) just won’t do I suggest either a 512MB or 1G card. I have been hearing a lot of moaning from people who are complaining about dead pixels um what LCD screen doesn’t suffer from this? Read the manual page 13 states that the dots are not a defect I may have one myself but it doesn’t bother me unless I physically check the screen and go looking for it. Hopefully it will fix itself (I won’t bother returning the PSP I might end up with a unit thats worse and has more dead pixels than the one I think that I have already got or some other issue(s) entirely.) I don’t have issues with stuck or broken buttons or any of that other nonsense. If you are that unhappy return it for a refund and buy a DS. I on the other hand LOVE my PSP and can’t wait to see what else gets released on this sexy beast i.

Despite the fact that one pixle is out, I still love my psp, and you can bearly notice it… The screen resolution is great, and I assure you, your jaw will drop the first time you see it. Never before has a handheld been made with this type of quality. Another thing I love about this system is that the games are alot more complex. One thing I would be careful about it the type of memorie card that it uses… The one supplied with the system will onyl hold 5-10 songs, and to get a 1 gig will set you back another $150. another must with this is a screen protector. You’ll be happy you spent the $10 when your friend has an aweful looking screen, and yours is still shiny!

This is a very reliable and fun game system. I have had mine for a couple years and it still works great. The games are more fun than what you would expect on a portable system, but have can get quite boring after a while. The wifi capability is good bonus, although its not very practical for browsing the internet, as you have to type in the individual letters and it doesn’t support most online video. The pictures you can store on the system look pretty nice, and the music player is convenient. Another good feature are the umd movies, which are great once you get used to the relatively small screen, but that doesn’t take long. You can also upload movies onto a memory stick and watch them on the PSP if you prefer that instead of umd, which can be more expensive than just renting a movie and converting it on your computer. All in all this is a great system and I would recommend buying it.

This gaming system is almost perfect in everyway. The only drawback is the use of the new UMD discs which in my opinion, is not as good as non volatile memory like cartridges and memory sticks. At least this system has both optical and a non volitile memory port so that perhaps they’ll have games in the Duo format; that will especially be important if the games ever evolve beyond 1.6 GB.As far as the dead pixel problem, it’s because of the low “yield”. Right now, they probably have lower yields then they like but it’s quite common for new displays to exhibit this during early stages of the production cycle.I, for one, am sick of the little kids posting complaints about the PSP and how much they like the DS. After all, this IS suppose to be a system designed for older people who have jobs that can afford to pay for such a system. I would suggest that the kids stick with the cheaper kiddie systems like the DS until they can get a job and pay for a PSP.

As many of the other reviews have indicated, the first thing you notice is how amazingly beautiful the screen is. Even the PSP itself is pure beauty. However, as you start playing your games, you start noticing that its beauty has been smeared with fingerprints. Hardly noticable once you are playing (unless you are playing a “dark” game). The power of this machine is amazing. Graphics are great and sound is fantastic. I owned a DS and thought I loved it (see my DS review). But when I laid hands on the PSP (my brother got one) I had to buy it. I don’t want to deal with 2 handhelds, so I sold my DS to my cousin for the PSP. I do not and will not regret my decision. DS is a cool inovative machine. However, all that goes out the window when you experience the truly amazing technology in the PSP. I own Ridge Racer and MLB 2006 and both are keeping me busy with joy. If you are true to yourself and enjoy games, visuals, sound, you can’t go wrong with the PSP. Its the Major leagues of portable video gaming. If you like to stay in the minors go with the DS. I for one, have graduated to the majors. I tip my hat to the folks over at Sony. Ladies and Gents, this is one handheld war Nintendo will not win.

It seems that the PSP is not a flash in the pan. There’s a lot more games than there were before – several RPG’s, 2 fight games, stuff for kids and stuff for adults.Unlike the Gameboy, some of the games out there are actually geared at adults.ok, it’s bigger, so it’s more hassle to carry than the GB micro, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. it’s got WiFi access, memory stick, MP3, loads of available movies (and several programs out there that let you transfer your DVD’s to PSP files).the only real drawbacks I see with it right now are that Sony isnt taking advantage of it’s memory card to make downloadable games available and the battery – the battery life isnt nearly long enough – if you’re a constant user like me you’ll have to recharge at least once a day.hopefully we’ll see a PSP2 sometime – it’s got a ways to go.
