SSX on Tour

SSX on Tour is a snowboarding and skiing game, the fourth title in the SSX series of video games for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and PlayStation Portable. It was release in North America on October 11, 2005 and in the PAL region on October 21, 2005. The PlayStation Portable version was release in Europe on October 28, 2005. In 2007, a prequel title SSX Blur was release, which took place between SSX 3 and SSX on Tour. The GameCube version contains Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach as playable characters. This was part of a deal Nintendo had with EA Sports to have Nintendo’s intellectual properties appear in EA franchises.

Gameplay

The gameplay in SSX on Tour is similar to that in SSX 3, with similar controls and the overall aims of events remaining the same – snowboard down a mountain while gaining points for various tricks that can be perform. After each trick, a player’s “boost bar” builds up, and once full enables a player to perform special moves. Known as “Monster Tricks” now, previously known as “Ãœber tricks”. Despite the similarities, numerous changes were made to the structure of races and events themselves.

Players can now create their own characters, selecting his/her symbol, makeup, height, clothes and hair. In addition to whether they are a snowboarder or a skier (skiing being a new feature in the game). Once create, their ‘boarder can compete in official competitions (known as “Events”). Or unofficial challenges known as “Shreds”. Each complete event or challenge gains their character “Hype”, raising their profile and moving them up the SSX charts, with the ultimate goal of reaching number one.

Custom-Created Characters

With the focus now on custom-created characters, the original SSX cast is moved into the background slightly, appearing in various Shreds against the player. And available to play as when not on the Tour itself. In addition to seven returning SSX veterans (Elise, Mac, Kaori, Zoe, Psymon, Nate and Allegra), three new characters make an appearance: Tyson, Sid and Skye.

In the Nintendo Gamecube version, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach appear as playable characters. Also in this version, the slope that was name “Last Call” in other versions of the game was rename to “Nintendo Village”. With certain textures in the level replace with Mario theme iconography. Unlike its predecessor, SSX3, no online play was include on any of the versions of SSX On Tour. The main focus was on improving the single-player storyline mode, implementing the character-creation system. The selection of new tracks, and the addition of skiing as well as snowboarding.

The PSP version also differs greatly from the main console versions, with limited customization to custom-characters and levels borrow from SSX 3. It also has omit the use of bonuses on the special “Monster Tricks”.

Presentation

However, this game is presented in the style of a sketch-book, a new direction for the SSX series. The cover artwork as well as the in-game menus are all shown in sketch formats, simplistic images often on a line background. The special in game collectibles, display as snowflakes in previous SSX games, have been replace with sketchlike doodles known as “skulvis”, which were actually controversial within the team according to art director Rich Curren. “When we look at the SSX franchise, everything was shiny and slick and felt too ‘produce,'” said Curren. “We use drawings that looked like they were produce by a 15-year-old kid – not even ‘good’ drawings at that. We commit to this concept and it work.”

    Favorite gamecube game

I’ve been an avid fan of the SSX series for quite a while, owning all but the first installment of the series. So naturally when I learned that SSX On Tour was being released I rushed to a store and picked up a copy. The first thing I noticed (other than the catchy, sketch style menus) was that I wouldn’t be using my favorite character, Allegra, this time around. Instead you get to create your own character, which was good and bad. The cool side is that you get to customize him or her to your heart’s desire, the downside is that they are strangely silent. Your character will not taunt others or cheer when victorious, something you may take for granted in previous SSX games.Upon starting the “On Tour”, the main mode of gameplay, I discovered the single greatest dissappointment that this game has: there is no freeriding around the mountain. One of my absolute favorite things about SSX3 was the ability to just cruise around the mountain, which gave the game a much more realistic feeling. If you wanted to participate in an event you could either take the lift or just take your time and board down to it. This fantastic feature is sadly absent from On Tour.My final gripe is the voices of the characters that you do encounter. Kaori’s funny Japanese jibberish (at least for we non-Japanese speaking people) from previous games has been replaced by a harsh English speaking voice that can easily be summed up as “unpleasant.” What they do say is generally less than interesting. T.

    Works perfectly!

  4. ClaudieFay

My daughter loves this game, it’s one of her favorites. The game improves the player’s skill level, and helps them get to a higher play level.

  5. Rachel

Got mine used but in great shape and in the orignal case with booklet. I am very pleased and it brings back lots of memories! No scratches at all on the disk.

  6. John Brookes

Received within a few days, no issues!

  7. Rowen Dovani

I have loved this game for years! I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to take out my will and play a few old games. I found out that my SSX on Tour was damaged and I was heart broken. I then found this! I am so happy to have it again!

Now before I start, I must state that I haven’t played any previous SSX games so I can’t compare this one to the others. The best thing I think about SSX: On Tour is the soundtrack, I love Red Flag, God Killed the Queen, Run for the Hills, and one other that I can’t remember right now. All around its very good there. The controls are easy to use but may be a bit confusing at first, but I’m a bit slow at those things, you may have a different experience. The character creation is very nice, with the brand name equipment to customize your character with. But the absence of personality from your person is a bad aspect there.I also disagree with the addition of Mario and them in this version of the game. If I wanted to be Mario I would go buy a Mario game.
