I didn’t think I’d like this at first, but I know I enjoy science fiction novels, so I gave it a try. Arthur C. Clarke would be proud.I agree with those who see it as a cerebral adventure, exploring not just “what’s out there” but also “what’s in us.” As the Mars series points out, “Mars is the enemy; if you stay there long enough, it’ll kill you” or something to that effect. Presumably space itself tries to do so too. I suspect that’s the God’s honest truth of it, and one ignores it to ones own peril. In fact, mistakes in the entirely hostile environment of space will probably be totally lethal very quickly. Survival takes the kind of thinking that SGU encourages, especially given the varied types of people who ended up quite literally “in the middle of nowhere.” How would one deal with multiple personality types thrown together and put under maximum stress? With each adventure, I realize, “I’d never make it more than a day.” Heck, I’d be psychotic within hours.My only complaint about the series is that the crew make more than their fair share of mistakes and still manage to survive it; at least they survive to learn the lesson that life is fragile, vulnerable and rare, so beware. Here the biggest threat to survival is the head-to-head encounters of the two major power positions, Rush and Young. It’s back to high school again, complete with the space jock and the computer nerd, while all the “classmates” stand around and watch. In short, how not to do a real trip.
I fully agree with others that it is such a shame this show only made it for two seasons. I was a fan of the previous Stargate incarnations, but this show is VERY different. It’s fairly dark, for the most part, and the stories tend to be much more character driven and deep, and there is a very palatable sadness that hangs over the episodes. The show is more about human nature, loneliness, loss, and yet still contains a helping of hope as well. The final episode even brings tears to my eyes as it really ends with a moment of both joy and loss. Unfortunately, I think most watchers of sci-fi based shows want more lasers, explosions and giant creepy monsters than they do human conflicts and an exploration of emotions and homesickness. But by far this was my favorite of the Stargate shows and I miss it very much. Highly recommend.
Sad to see that the adventures do not continue. I’m dying to know if they survived those three years or not, what happened to Eli, etc. I surprisingly got very into this show. I really wish there were more seasons. I have binged this series on retrolio over the past couple of weeks. After this last episode I thought to myself “I would pay extra to watch more seasons” only to find there were no more seasons. I don’t ever write reviews, so I definitely loved this enough to feel like I had to say something. It was a great ride while it lasted. Albeit, in the beginning I felt it was all kind of cheesy and somewhat predictable. However, over time, I came to love the characters and all the crazy situations they got into. I love sci-fi and I feel this turned out to be a great sci-fi that I will think about for quite some time. I’m sad to say goodbye already. Bring it back, retrolio.
When this was on TV, I missed the Pilot episode, or at least I paid little enough attention to it that when I watched subsequent episodes, I didn’t fully understand what was going on. So I never really got into this show as much as the other SG franchises, all of which I loved.I binged watched this on retrolio Prime, and it all made so much more sense. But through the entire first season, I still didn’t particularly like the show. The characters seemed inherently shallow and unlikable. They did not get along, and the internal conflicts were sometimes painful to watch. There was some overacting by the secondary characters, and responses which seemed a bit over the top. Overall, not impressive.The 2nd season was even worse. It delved right into the topic of religion, and that was something that is simply taboo in a Sci-Fi show, at least to me. Even more unlikable. But… somewhere around the 2nd half of Season 2, the show hit its stride. The characters started working together. They started acting like a family, instead of random strangers stuck in this terrible situation. The alternate reality from space travel was awesome! Both the concept and the execution, and how that tied into their journey, and the future possibilities, now that they knew what was possible. They picked up a 2nd shuttle too! Cool!I totally get why the decision was made to cancel it. If it were up to me, by the 3rd episode of the 2nd Season, I would have cancelled it too. But, all that terrible set up for su.
All I can say is I find most tv SCIFI Ludicrous, Pathetic or maybe Bearable.Exception Prime’s series”the Expanse” (Beautiful).”Stargate Universe” is even more wonderful.I am now watching all 41 episodes again for the 3rd time.Why ? Incredible graphics, compelling stories, very real concepts, a few flaws ,but hey even the gods make mistakes.
While other Stargate series are interesting and entertaining, this series, SG•U is more enticing. It touches the human nature and bring it into the series. If we can ignore the obvious aspects of the show, such as the show being a melodramatic, cliche-filled, frequently-predictable SciFi action fantasy, the show is less cartoonish and idealistic but more realistic in its own way.What would happen if undisciplined groups of people were thrown together in a life-threatening situation? Will they be able to form a community and work together to survive? What if the only way for them to survive is to work together? What if everyone will have to find a way to learn to put the community first before individual desires? Can we survive the catastrophe?In terms of production style, this show reminded me of Battlestar Galactica. Perhaps they have some connection and/or influence. The light, colours, camera angles, the way that it pans, zooms and jumps resembled that of Battlestar Galactica.Overall, a great show. Interesting to watch. Disappointed that the series did not survive beyond Season 2.
Perhaps this should have been its own series, rather than an extension of the other SGs. I thought it was the best, and it’s not even close. I did find the others entertaining (SG-1, Atlantis, the movies…) but this takes a much darker, more serious tone. Absolutely love this series and it’s a shame that it ended. So much potential.If you’re into the comical happy-go-lucky franchise of SG-1, you might not like this. TRY to separate yourself from that and enjoy this series for what it truly is…a SciFi adventure into the unknown. It’s dark, it’s depressing. Like a SciFi soap opera with the right balance of drama and action. Other reviewers are correct – the cast is, for the most part, very unlikable. But the mysteries that unravel keep you guessing and keep you interested if you suspend disbelief. I do not believe this series was intended for the folks who simply want to root for the good guy. It is entirely unclear who the good guys are. But I did find characters with whom I could identify. It just depends on who you are.It starts with a bad situation and usually gets worse, with a few happy moments along the way. And I loved every minute of it. Most great programs go on too long and have really bad endings. This one ended too soon.
What the hell is wrong with network execs? This show was fabulous, really imaginative and not just shoot em ups like so many. Truly loved it and as soon as I see the last episode of season 3, poof, there is no more. This show was a strange experience for me, like many shows the first season seemed to be a struggle for the cast and writers. Characters were annoying and their relationships were honestly terrible. But as the show started to get into its groove and characters developed beyond their initial idiocy it actually became a pretty great show. It sucks that it was cancelled because I feel like eventually it could have become one of the all time great sci-fi’s.So close, yet so far.
What I enjoy the most about this show is that it shows us the nuance of human characteristics. We, like people, have grown too used to the hero arch types where the hero is always a hero at all times. However, in reality, humans are not good or bad but vary on the spectrum based on the situations. Most shows are missing the nuance to a person and their depth.Every episode, a character adjust their beliefs based on circumstances and information available to them; that does not make us evil or good. Instead, the growth and change we see help us acknowledge that people are not one-dimensional. That makes them You will grapple and struggle to choose and have a single favorite. Change is the only constant.Dr. Rush and coronal Young are the most nuanced, some of you may agree with me, and some may disagree. If nothing else, we can acknowledge that they have flaws like every human on planet earth. They make bad decisions and recognize that their positions on the crew has not made them infallible.The fact the visual effect is not too polished does not detract from the show but enhances it making it look real. You being to feel the crew’s anguish about the limited amount of open air space and trees.

Amazing television. Human drama that can only be realized through science fiction. Superbly written, acted, directed and produced. Season 1 does do a lot of character and story-line building, but sets up so many payoffs in season 2. Quite different from the first 2 Stargate series with more tension and less humor. (Still there are chuckles) Do not watch an episode or 2 and think you get it. The character development from beginning to end is quite engaging. Truly great TV.

I absolutely love this show. It is vastly better than Stargate Atlantis. I really wish that they hadn’t canceled it. I want to know what happened to them! To me it had a great story line. The characters were portrayed just as they needed to be. These were regular people not soldiers for the most part having to suddenly figure out how to survive on an ancient ship and deal with things that they never in their life had expected to deal with. To me the producers had something really special and different and should have made at least one more season and not left us hanging here. To the nay sayers, I say, you don’t know what you are talking about. Sg1 was great though it had some tedious seasons, Atlantis was boring but Universe did not have one boring episode. It was supposed to be different from the others and not a carbon copy. Producers you folded to soon. Bring it back!

When it first aired I considered it rather boring. Possibly because it was so different from the other SG series. After just watching it again I found that I enjoyed it much more than the first time. A reboot of the series would be nice, at least to show them getting back to earth (even though some were extraterrestrials). It’s highly unlikely that they’ll be bringing back the original cast though.

Even though its been off-air for ages now, I still watch the entire thing at least once a year. It’s funny, I remember when SciFi canceled this show and replaced it with wrestling. I still haven’t watched Syfy since and have killed cable as well.Granted, there where many things that happened in this show that where totally unnecessary but the concept, the ship, roaming from galaxy to galaxy, sign me up please! Note: As an odd tribute to this show, I play the game No Man’s Sky and I named my main ship Destiny and so far, we have traveled through 5 galaxies and I do not plan on stopping anytime soon.

I just finished watching the series again after I guess 7 or 8 years now, and it gotten better with time it’s more realistic then Atlantis and other seiries before they were more fun fairy tale stories and they did good with those stories, But I think Universe was just a little too serious and different for that audience at that time and previous series, I hope they look at bring it back it’s a great story and science fiction. With them going on a amazing starship but thats really advanced in a lot of ways but primative to what they were dealing with before that’s a neat twist. leaves room for more possibilites. I really enjoyed watching it again.

this was a great show held back only by the pacing (flashbacks, communication stone plotlines) and the producers. it was screwed by the network but it left a perfect hook for a wide open science fiction universe. a real playground for any writers room and showrunner. hell i have based my own table top RPGs on this kind of setup, because it’s perfect for anything you could want from week to week, long plots or short plots.if i were to write a treatment it would be simple: math boy pulled it off but they missed the window, and he broke his promise. but instead of 50,000 years he managed to pull it off with only a (insert time x since cancellation) delay. during this time math boy basically lived in a space suit and a shuttle, with a finite amount of air and water molecules that he recycled and processed between his body and the airlock for x years. he spent his days meticulously repairing sections of the ship and learning the ships systems and the ancient data core. he is changed by the experience (he can be fit and more serious, grown up with a bit of mystery.) we emerge from FTL x years later, attempt communication with earth to find that there is no response, even from the stones. we have an extra try the stones by having you know, dr badmanners insist on forcing the saftey overrides. the extra screams in agony and almost dies horribly in a way that lets everyone know that unless we come up with a really good mystery that needs a short timeline on earth or whatever, we’re no.

While many fans of SG1 and Atlantis were put off by the darker tone of SGU, I think it is a worthy addition to the SG family. The relationships are more complex and some of the main characters are difficult to pigeonhole into the usual stereotypes. I think this ambiguity of having a character who is saving everyone but is not a very pleasant person is hard for people to digest. I would argue that this series is the one that comes closest to having characters that are like real people. There are also themes of people getting life threatening diseases like kidney disease and ALS that are not caused by anything in the plot. Once again more like real life. It is a real tragedy that it was canceled with just 2 seasons, as the characters were developing in interesting ways. I think the show would have done much better if it had come out a few years later.

Universe had more character development than the other Stargate shows combined. The characters are more complex and not just surface level. Greer in particular started out as just a jerk to hate on, but ended up as my favorite character. Every character had their flaws, but they all played off each other so well. Sure, with this number of people, there were a lot of people that were just bodies to fill the cast, but secondary characters got their moments to shine as well.They took some basic tropes that make it into every fantasy/sci-fi show and put a spin on them. Time Travel, groundhog day, character metamorphosis.It’s a crime that this show ended. Universe deserved better. The cast deserved better. Stargate SG1 had how many movies after the series ended? They could have given us one for Universe.It would be 5 stars except for the cancellation ending.

I so enjoyed this series when it was on. During the first season some of the acting was painful to watch, though most was excellent. I really hated the visits to earth. If I’m watching a show called Stargate I probably am not really interested in earth stories, know what I mean? I thought season two was much better, and then left on a cliff-hanger and cancelled. How sad for fans.

I’ve watched all the Stargate series and SG Universe is by far the best. The alien technology was amazing, the cast and the acting is excellent, to where i really felt like I knew the characters so the character development is the best in all of the SG series. Also, unlike the other SG series which I spread out watching over quite some time, I binge watched SGU over several days, wanting to know with anticipation what would happen next. Two cons: I wish ther had been some sort of resolution regardign the Command ships during the series as they sort of got old as a recurring issue. The other con is that this series should not have been cut short after 2 seasons!! I was extremely disappointed. I would have liked it to continue for at least another two or three seasons as I felt it ended way prematurely with too much uresolved. I’d love to see this series either revived or somehow dovetailed with a new SG series or new Stargate movie to find out where Destiny is today in the realm of Stargate.
