  1. Nox Arcana

I guess in that way it makes the show unfaithful to the brand. And I get that. But on it’s own, it’s way better in every way except ‘camp factor’ than previous Stargate series. It was a crime to cancel it. It was the only bright light in a very dismal sci-fi world for a while (we have more options now like the expanse and discovery, but this was way before those and after Galactica had run its course. There was literally nothing else). It’s sad that it can’t be appreciated because it shares a name with a series that attracts goobers who only like cheese and unrealistic acting. None of them realize that SG-1 bore no resemblance to the movie with Kurt Russell, which was much more serious and actually awesome.

Such a shame SyFy cancelled this. Watching it again several years later and I think I like it even more than before. I wish retrolio or Netflix or somebody would resurrect this show! It’s not too late. The episodes ‘darkness’ and ‘light’ have some of the most visually mesmerizing scenes I have ever seen. There are no good scifi shows now where we explore the universe. They are all alternate realities, superheroes or zombies. It would be really nice to have this back. It is such a great show and it also has such incredible potential for growth. It is not an adrenalin rush as so many newer shows try to be but, is instead a very well done, thought provoking and visually stunning work. It is better (and in most cases is far better) than anything SyFy has brought us since and is as good or better than other scifi offerings on retrolio or Netflix. It would also appear from some of the negative reviews, if your looking for more of the same from sg1 and aren’t really open to something different you may not like it. I personally enjoyed the older series but always thought them to be less than what they could have been and more than a little cheesy sometimes and was always very one dimensional. I was never that big of a fan of sga because it often went too far into the cheesy side of the spectrum. Sgu is darker and much more complex with real characters and in my opinion, very good, but it is not a revamp of the same old formula.

I’ve been a Sci-fi nut for over 50 years, and I’ve never seen a series as well-developed as this franchise. Great actors, the cast includes some stars such as Lou Diamond Philips, but it’s mostly relative unknowns – they all shine!Special effects are marvelous, with lots of gadgets, creepy creatures are truly terrifying, and each storyline interweaves with plenty of cliffs-hangers.A serious choice for binge-watching, and interesting enough to watch all over again next year.Better than any Star Trek series or movie ever made, the ending in Season 2, Chapter 20 leaves this the perfect property to re-initiate a brans new sequel or prequel. With all the junk currently being produced to fill the bottomless pit of the New Media Content Era, one would hope the producers would pitch another couple of seasons and get retrolio or Netfix to step up.

I loved this series! it was actually the first one I watched before discovering the rest of the SG franchise. The others are great, but there’s something so damn cool about The premise of this show. I agree that it got cancelled just as it was getting really good. I know that it won’t ever happen, but this would be a great show for Prime to resurrect! Since SyFy does such a terrible job with keeping good shows (and Prime clearly is good at picking them up a la The Expanse) then I think this would be a perfect one to do!!

  5. John H. Hardin

This series is much richer and better written than most tv shows, or movies, for that matter. It is engrossing, but often leaves you unsettled. I suspect this series suffered in popularity because it wasn’t what people wanted to spend a hour with after coming home from a long day of their own problems. The challenges presented to the crew each week would be life threatening and often soul-crushing. And when they’d overcome some huge challenge by the skin of their teeth, there’d be mere seconds of respite before another threat would loom over them. The characters are complex. You will be shown why someone is the way they are. Even the most hated character might show such redeeming qualities you almost love them at times. But the most beloved characters will also show traits you won’t like at all. This show is complex and challenging. It’s not end-of-workday relaxing.

I hope this series gets a reboot at some point. It was by far the best work of the Stargate writers, producers and directors. Yes….it’s not SG1 or SGA. It wasn’t supposed to be. Although I loved both of those series, SG*U is different and far more compelling. This story is not about comic relief or Wormhole Extreme. It’s a serious action/drama with a compelling story and amazing cinematography. The characters are not action adventure heroes. They are realistic and have a lot of depth. The entire series is a single story arc. It was incredibly disappointing to see the series end after just two seasons. There is so much more to tell. A lot of unanswered questions. What happened to Franklin? Dr. Perry and Ginn?If you haven’t watched it, you should. But expect a series more like The Expanse and less like Wormhole Extreme ( the SG1 spoof on itself).

I have always been a Star Gate fan. I’ve never liked the good guy/bad guy formula composition of many Sci Fi movies. This is a series that I can watch again and again. The acting is wonderful. The story lines are very good. It is a shame that the really great series are cancelled all the time. Stories that have meaning and develop well. I wish they brought this back. Like the Expanse, this is a classic.

When SGU was launched, fans of its predecessors, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis expected more of the same. Namely, a team of intrepid heroes has exciting planet-of-the-week adventures while fending off evil and suspiciously human-like enemies, such as the Gouald or the Wraith, with FN P90s and lots of explosions. SGU broke the mold with its more serious look at space exploration. We could no longer magically understand aliens (what few there were). Technological societies were not present on every planet but instead were quite rare. To me, this made the encounters with the alien all the more exciting.Robert Carlyle’s Dr. Rush was no Dr. Carter, or even Dr. McKay. And Louis Ferreira’s Colonel Young was no Jack O’neill or even John Shephard. The SG-1 protagonists were extremely likable and heroic, and while McKay and Shephard had some issues with other people and authority, respectively, they were still likable and heroic. Variations on a theme. The SGU protagonists are more like real people. Deeply flawed people. Rush is selfish, cunning, abrasive, brilliant but not impossibly so, and at times just fundamentally unlikable. Colonel Young is insubordinate, moody, often unprofessional, but military through and through. Both characters are far more interesting than their predecessors. The other cast members are good but these two and their diametrically opposed world views really steal the show.Unfortunately, too many fans of SG1 and SGA hated they didn’t get another carbon c.

Still almost 10 years later I watch it and love it, the beginning is a little dry but like most that is where the character development is, the second season is where it really takes off and becomes so enjoyable and not just another version of SG1 its something totally different and completely new challenges.I hope for one day to read the news that this is getting rebooted and they can bring it back with the timeline that it took Eli just over 2 weeks to fix the last pod and he made it but it meant the trip was 10 years instead of 3 to match actor aging, I can hope and will hope that this gets brought back to try a season 3 and on.

“We’re not in [The SGC] anymore” – Dorothy.Everything about this show feels like a natural progression from SG1 and Atlantis. Camera angles, dialogue, and lighting are all conducive to the empty and hostile nature of the universe that permeates the ship. The crew face a constant false sense of security with reality-checks around each FTL jump via hunger, Aliens and bad blood among the ship’s occupants. It’s not totally a show that wraps up each problem per episode, rather strings them together well enough that removing one might ruin the over-arcing tapestry of the show’s seasons.I watched all of SG1 and enjoyed it, I really did but after watching SGU I dont think following with SG Atlantis will cut it.Give it 1/2 a season before you make up your mind, that’s my recommendation.
