The previous game in the series (named Suikoden IV, go figure) was in many ways disappointing. Luckily, Suikoden V rectifies many of the flaws, though it is not perfect. The biggest flaw? Missable characters. If you’re familiar with the Suikoden games you will recognize the game revolves around 108 characters, or Stars of Destiny. In the previous games it took a lot of effort to permanently miss a character – you’d have to choose to execute a character, or tell them to buzz off several times – something most players aren’t going to do without expecting negative consequences. Suikoden V fails in this aspect. There are a number of characters you will permanently miss if you fail to do some minor task at precisely the right time. Consequently I required a walkthrough for most of the game, simply out of fear of missing something that did not appear significant at the time (I call this Final Fantasy X-2 Syndrome!) Another significant problem occurs during the tactical battles. If your unit comes out ahead of a particular skirmish, the enemy unit will flee. Makes sense. Unfortunately they have a way of fleeing in rather silly ways – they will travel a considerably large distance (while everyone else is frozen), through your other units, often stopping next to your own weakened units, who appeared to be safe so far away and behind a wall of defense. Not so much. Other problems include long and frequent load times, random battles (try something new please), unskippable.
If you’re familiar with the suikoden series or a fan of turn based Jrpgs you’ll feel right at home. While more than a few aspects of suikoden 5 have been lifted from suikoden 2 & not reworked such as RNG(randomly generated) based character recruitment or the far, few specific character recruitment quest, & lack of fully viewable world map suikoden 5 makes up in relateable & likeable characters & dramatic storytelling. As a long time fan of the series, I loved it! In this game konami got back to the roots of suikoden with many shout outs to Suikoden I and Suikoden II. Far superior than Suikoden III, Suikoden IV. Cannot wait for Suikoden VI!!!! There’s a New Game + mode too which is great for replay potential.

I have loved all the suikoden games.I have the first thru the fifth.I especially like the game play and the characters in this one.I also like that you can make orbs and build your skills(great touch)There really isn’t anything i don’t like about this game.The characters have personalities and a great range of indivituality.Love the battles too.Rune archers,infintry,calvery and lots more.Sea and land battles that you have to use your head to win.Shopping,treasures,trading,prizes for winning battles and alot more pleasent surprizes on your journies.If you decide to get this game in my oppinion you won’t be disappointed.HAPPY GAME PLAY!

I am only about 50% finished with this game, but already I love it. This game has the old school charm of Suikoden 1 & 2. Unfortunately it has the old school camera angle. It’s not that the graphics are bad, it’s just that at the 3/4 angle view it’s kind of hard to see the detail. You can zoom up, but then it’s hard to get a view of your surroundings. Plus the non-cinematic cut scenes are in the wide angle.So if you like the Suikoden games like I do, this is a must have. Just don’t expect to be impressed with the graphics. Just like getting past the limited battle control of part 3 and the tedious sailing of part 4, it’s well worth the effort.
