When I first got a Gameboy, I had quite a few games, but I had three or four that were my Go To games: Metrod II, Mario:Six Gold Coins, Tetris, and Shanghai. It was easy to spend hours immersed in any of them. For about the last ten to fifteen years, fans have been begging for an updated version of Metroid II, similar to Metroid: Zero Mission. That hasn’t happened until now with a beautiful 3-DS game.If this had been a colorized, graphics updated port, I would have been thrilled. But instead of just doing that, this is almost a new game. The addition of the map was much needed. When I played before, I had to do my own map on graph paper and it still was a challenge. The new melee attack is a nice addition, but it is taking me some time to adjust to using it. The way I have played Metroid for years has been, Fire, fire, FIRE! This game is a bit different in that you need to learn how to use the counter attack.I’ve ony had the game for a few days and am getting adjusted to the new controls, but I am thrilled and anticipate spending even more time with this game than I have with other Metriod Games. There are timew when I enter an area and can say, -WOW, this looks great! I wonder what Area X will be like. I can’t wait to get there to see.Great job Nintendo!!!

Fantastic! I never got to play the original two games but Super Metroid is my past, present, and future. I never got into the Prime style of games as much because I prefer the 2D sidescrolling type. Game has a very nice, updated look to it and I love the music. The new counter move seems a little gimmicky and overpowered at first, but later in the game is used less which I think is a fine balance. I don’t usually enjoy boss fights but always seem to like the Nintendo ones; this game is no exception! These fights are a lot of trial and error as you learn boss patterns but dying in this game isn’t terrible at all as it sets you back only to the previous screen or so and load times are fast; no simmering in your failure! If you’re a fan of old school Metroid or side scrolling games, I highly recommend! This was the first game I played on my new 2DS XL and it was perfect! I would suggest holding off on using the amiibos until after your first playthrough. They only give you extra tanks and such and I thought the difficulty without such things was very appropriate.Great game!

Samus Aran is back and kicking ass in 2D. This is a remake of Metroid 2 on the Gameboy and it’s had a huge update to graphics as well as mechanics. A lot of fun, a lot of surprises, and the story made me like Super Metroid even more.

I have been waiting for a Metroid game like this for a very very long time. Even if it is a remake and remaster of an old Gameboy title, it did the series justice. This game provided a good challenge at times and hours of exploration. It even has the charm of roping you back in for another play through, or getting you to want to explore every area and get every last power up. Music track was alright, but not the best the series has offered. Graphics for a 3DS were great. Controls varied but overall were great. After playing this and seeing what they were capable of, I would love to see some of the other older titles receive the same treatment. This is a must have item for any 3DS owner.

Great and fun gameplay. Feels like a proper side-scrolling Metroid game. Completed "normal" mode in ~12 hours. Difficulty felt balanced. Using the amiibos makes the game a bit easier, might be useful for hard modes.

Newcomers and Metroid fanboys can rejoice together – We got the Metroid game we both need and deserve, after a 10 year break from classic side-scrolling action. I’m only 4 or 5 hours in, and I’m about 20% finished, to give an idea of its scale. I have loved all the other mainline Metroid games, so I tend to explore every nook and cranny for secret upgrades and shortcuts. The only thing I can say as a warning is this: this is a difficult game. Even on Normal I have died WAY more than I ever do in the other games (okay, maybe Super Metroid wins in that category for now). It isn’t difficult in a frustrating way though. Unlike other Metroid games, it lets you start a boss fight over again without returning you all the way to your last save point. This solves the frustrating 3 minute slog back to the boss you just failed to defeat over and over. This allows me to focus on memorizing the patterns and attacks of the boss, rather than wanting to throw my DS at the wall because I’ve spent more time walking to the boss than actually fighting him.Even though I’m not finished with the game yet, I still felt I should write my thoughts on how much I already love it. The 3D environments are beautiful, even though you can only move side-scrolling. This reminds me of thr first time I ever got hooked on the old games, but with a beautiful and refreshing polish.Samus has returned, and the wait has been worth it.

Samus is back for a proper 2D adventure! The controls are perfect, and even the 3D effect is done beautifully.I hope they use these assets to make a whole new game.Super recommended.

Samus Returns was an excellent game, and it holds up very well to the older 2D entries in the series. I say this as a life-long fan of the series, having played through every mainline entry Super Metroid and forward many times. Compared to the others, I would personally rank this game above Fusion, but slightly below Zero Mission and Super. My runthrough of the game with 100% items took exactly 20 hours according to the 3DS timer, and ~15 hours according to the in-game timer. That makes this the longest 2D Metroid game by quite a lot, and arguably the lengthiest game in the whole series. The gameplay is extremely smooth and natural-feeling, and once you get used to it you almost wonder how you ever got by without free aiming. All of the abilities are well implemented and the maps are very well thought out and beautiful to look at. I also loved the new Aeon abilities you get in this game, which adds a whole new dimension to the existing gameplay formula. If I have one complaint, it’s that the maps don’t interconnect in quite the same way as they do in Super or Zero Mission, but that’s mostly to stay true to the original Metroid 2 which was laid out differently from those games as well. Also, while I personally enjoyed it, many people aren’t fond of the new Melee mechanic, which is essential to progressing through the game.In terms of difficulty, this is certainly the most difficult Metroid game. I feel pretty safe in saying that. The saving grace, however, is that the game is *v.
