The game is awesome, been waiting for a Metroid game for a while. I am not totally on board with the exploration of it, but that is because I grew up playing Metroid Fusion first and I loved the linear story of Fusion. This came is polished and can keep you entertained for hours so I have to give it 5 start for a quality Nintendo product. You might think that the counter attack would make this easy, but sometimes enemies hit you 1 time and take over a full health bar. Not a pushover type of game.

I was really worried when I saw Mercury Steam was attached to the project but it’s fantastic. The new counter mechanic adds more depth to enemy encounters (no more enemies flying in a straight line). The metroid battles are really fun and some of the best boss battles in the series. Game does not hold your hand like zero mission and fusion. You are placed in a large area and left to explore it at your leisure. Samus’ new suit looks fantastic as well. Any fan of Metroid (or Castlevania) will feel right at home with this game.

While this Metroid game opts for a brighter color palette than others, it’s a beautiful remake of the original release with added combat mechanics. There are added battle cutscenes, but they’re not nearly as long as the ones Nintendo added in Pokemon Sun & Moon, so they don’t take away from the gameplay. New and longtime fans will appreciate this addition to the series. The game case arrived in perfect condition with no blemishes, rips or dents, and it was sealed in plastic. (This was removed for the photos, as I had already opened the case so I could play the game.)I haven’t completed this game yet, so I may come back and revise this review to reflect how I feel when it’s finished, but I’ve given it a 5 star review upon my initial reaction and the condition that the game arrived in.

Probably the best Metroid game to come out in the last 10-12 years. A bit repetitive during the middle, but the beginning and ending are top notch gameplay. Very fun, my only complaint is the use of save points…

I remember playing Return of Samus on the old GameBoy long long ago. I still have the game save just before the last battle (and it still works!)The 3DS looks quite amazing and almost unrecognizable when compared to the original. While the game elements are there, even the enemies, they feel more vicious and less oblivious to your presence so the challenge is certainly there even if you’re familiar with the old game — though there are newer weapons/abilities given to you to assist in mitigating the difficulty. The throwbacks in the music are a nice touch, bringing back remixes of the score from the original game and some later games. The game at it’s core is still super fun, and there is more than enough difference in this game and the original to make it well worth the purchase.
