Great game, and awesome to have on the 3DS. However l can’t help but feel like this is an extremely stripped down version of the WiiU counterpart. You’re almost like a ghost when it comes to the interaction part of sharing/playing levels. First is the matter of only being able to share when Streetpassing; it sucks and l like the idea but damn is it hard to get SMM streetpasses. Second is basically, you can only play select levels online; and they don’t even bother giving you a stupid flag when you complete a level, nor even let you write or draw silly pictures in comments on levels. The game itself is great, platforming takes a bit to get used to but is solid controlling, and making levels just feels great (with the exception of the 4 second load time every time you want to test) but Nintendo really dropped the fireball when it came to interaction with other players.

My 11 year old loves it. I think it’s a bit limiting for how much it cost. But he plays with it, so effective in that sense.

Once I heard this game was coming to 3ds I had to get it. After reading about how you couldn’t share maps online I started to get worried there wouldn’t be as much replay value to the game. While it is true you can’t share your maps that you’ve made on the 3ds, you do have access to a game mode called "100 Mario Challenge" that let’s you select a difficulty and play through 16 maps created by the community on the Wii U. You can go to the next map if it’s too hard by holding select down, and each time you play the maps are different. I’ve sunk a dozen hours into this mode alone without even touching the rest of the game yet. Nintendo kinda of drop the ball with what could have been a perfect game, but it’s still worth the price for how many hours of play you’ll get out of it.

The game itself is pretty good lots of different options when your making a world, however if you do own the wii version it is different and missing some of the options you have when creating. It is expected though that it wouldn’t be exactly the same but just something to keep in mind when purchasing.

Before the sequel on the Switch, we bought this when it came out. We currently have three copies: one for my 3DS, one for my New Nintendo 3DS XL, and one for my brotherâ€™s 3DS. You canâ€™t play with one cartridge on multiple 3DSes, or else all save data is erased, which is disappointing. You also need a decent amount of storage on your SD card. If you have a lot of pictures and stuff, you should buy a bigger microSD card. Thereâ€™s also a considerable amount of lag when making/playing courses in the New Super Mario Bro. U style. You also canâ€™t co-create courses at the same time. Rather, you can exchange them over wireless, making it great to share courses but not create them cooperatively. Finally, you canâ€™t search for courses online. Online courses are randomly loaded in Course World.Now, for the good: itâ€™s so much fun to create your courses no matter where you are. SMM1 does have quite a few differences than SMM2 still, so in my opinion itâ€™s worth having both. If you want to know all the differences between versions (upgrades and downgrades), look it up on YouTube.I also like the included courses and the challenge medals for completing them. Itâ€™s like a Super Mario Bros. Game, but in four different styles, and a lot of creativity you wonâ€™t see in an ordinary Mario game. Itâ€™s cool for variety, and just the fun of it. You could buy this game and never create a single course, if youâ€™re not that type of person. There are plenty of courses included (organized in 18 different worlds).

My 9 year old son enjoys making up new mazes and patterns for he and his friends to play. Only wish that it could connect to the television for easier viewing and play. The Switch has taken over the once prominent role 3DS used to play.
