Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a 2001 crossover fighting video game develop by HAL Laboratory and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. It features characters from Nintendo video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pokémon, among others. The stages and gameplay modes reference or take designs from these franchises as well.

Melee includes all playable characters from the first game and also adds characters from additional franchises such as Fire Emblem, of which no games had been release outside Japan at the time, in addition to new stages and gameplay modes. Like other games in the Smash Bros. series, Melee’s gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the fighting game genre, with a counter that measures damage with increasing percentages, representing the knockback the character will experience, rather than a depleting health bar seen in most fighting games.

Description

Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise. Let Nintendo’s stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. And in typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. But the actual combat isn’t as intricate as in other fighting games.

However, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee’s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. And the camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Moreover, Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.

As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game’s existence. But the single-player mode is decidedly weak. Also the game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. However, sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands.

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat.
  • Many new characters and other goodies to unlock.

Cons:

  • Single-player experience is comparatively weak.
  • Too cute for a few folks.
  • Adventure mode is boring.

In buying the game ‘Super Smash Bros. Melee’ for the system Game Cube, my thoughts are heavily satisfied. I could not wait for this thing to arrive, I could barely even play anything else until it came. Besides the Game itself being a fantastic Battle game, the product was in fabulous condition. It was as the description said, and thus was trustworthy..It looked like they cleaned it really well, but it almost looks new. Great job.. THANK YOU for letting me re-live the past with Super Smash Brothers. -Aaron Kilpatrick Jones

This game is one of the best on the market. It has brought hours of enjoyment for my son and his friends ( and me!).The graphics are great and the game play is very smooth. There are lots of options that make game play interesting … plus 20 or so characters to play with.Pausing the game during a battle captures some great action shots.Buy this game.

Best game ever. Only Con is the price

This Game is absolute madness on the Gamecube and continues to be one of the best reasons to get an Nintendo Wii. It’s that not only can you play Wii games on it but Gamecube games, Super Nintendo Games, Nintendo Entertainment System Games and many more on the online universe for pennies on the dollar but the Gamecube is perfect for this reason too and with other games such as (Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe, Metroid: Prime, Ikaruga etc.) that getting a gamecube for twenty bucks or so is just as much a good investment. The total quality of Super Smash Bros: Melee is easily the best out of the series. Adding the most to an already perfect game made this game a roaring successor to the original Nintendo 64-bit Game Console.Adding 15 some characters all new to the mix, a small mini-game missions’ section where you had to complete different obstacles, a trophy section with real game/character/item facts, newly remastered stages w/ classic 64-bit stages, a new single player Adventure mode where you can roam through the worlds of Nintendo’s All Stars, and a survival game system where you can battle the polygon warriors in endless waves to the death. This game is still revered as the best in the 3 game series as to date. The Versus mode adds new battle modes such as invisible players, sudden death capabilities or Giant Melees which keep the battles from becoming stale. The fighting capabilities allow for a greater range of attacks and make use of fade-away dodge features which allow v.

Incredible game. I’ve been looking for this game for awhile. The Super Smash Bros series is a legendary game series by Nintendo, and all the games are great but this one stands out as the best. So many great characters from every Nintendo universe coming together for a rock-em, sock-em battle experience that is sure to be fun for single or multiplayer. Choose from all of your favorites as it improves upon the greatness of the N64 original Super Smash Bros., but with more characters, more items, more levels, and better graphics for an epic fighting experience.

This is by far the best gamecube game there is, always good to have a working copy. :)
