Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee is a 2001 crossover fighting video game develop by HAL Laboratory and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. It features characters from Nintendo video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pokémon, among others. The stages and gameplay modes reference or take designs from these franchises as well.
Melee includes all playable characters from the first game and also adds characters from additional franchises such as Fire Emblem, of which no games had been release outside Japan at the time, in addition to new stages and gameplay modes. Like other games in the Smash Bros. series, Melee’s gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the fighting game genre, with a counter that measures damage with increasing percentages, representing the knockback the character will experience, rather than a depleting health bar seen in most fighting games.
Description
Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise. Let Nintendo’s stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. And in typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. But the actual combat isn’t as intricate as in other fighting games.
However, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.
Super Smash Bros. Melee’s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. And the camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Moreover, Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.
As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game’s existence. But the single-player mode is decidedly weak. Also the game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. However, sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands.
Pros:
- Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat.
- Many new characters and other goodies to unlock.
Cons:
- Single-player experience is comparatively weak.
- Too cute for a few folks.
- Adventure mode is boring.

I was prepared to give this game 1 star because I played it for the first time today and I thought "this game is stupidly easy!" Then I realized the game was preset on "very easy." So that explained things. My first impressions of the game is that it has the most beautiful graphics I have ever seen. There’s not a single flaw I could find. The colors are bright and vibrant and the characters are very well detailed. However, the pitfall to this game is the loose controls. They’re too simple to be a good fighting game and too loose to be a good platformer. In this fighting game you’re asked to sometimes perform some difficult jumping and, while that’s not the toughest thing in the world to do, it should be a lot easier. Street Fighter it’s not. The game is huge though and offers a lot to a single player or multiplayers. The game creators thought of everything. Even putting a mini Star Fox type game during the credits. If only this game had better controls it would be a perfect game.Graphics: 5.0Control: 4.0Sound: 4.5Fun Factor: 4.5

With just buying this and playing it once more It brought back so much memories!!I’ve owned this game before back when it first came out, however since I was younger I got careless with it and it was far beyond saving it. And I must say this game is still the best of the best even though Brawl is out and the 3DS/Wii U version is out i still love melee more. Not only because it was a piece of my childhood but also because it had memories from where I was in grade school they had a carnival and also they hosted a tournament in one of the rooms where it involved Smash Melee I totally signed up and topped everyone and became the Champion. Those were the days. Where I always picked Falco (and still do) wearing red and just always murdered everyone of my friends and strangers lol I was even given the nick name (The Suite) because every time I picked Falco wearing red Id always say (no one can beat the suite!!) every time I won lol

Plays well, though does take a little bit for the console to read the disc whenever it’s loading.

I have played thousands of hours and watch tournaments of the highest caliber of play and there is no better fighting game. I will attempt to change that subjectivity into something a bit more objective. The game is pixel perfect. That is the attacks completely line up with the animation and graphic of the sprites, there isn’t just a bulky ‘area’ of affect like you’d see in street fighter or even a high/mid/low range you’d seen in other traditional fighters. Every pixel can be hit by any other pixel. The controls are incredibly solid and to a point fluid and intuitive. They allow for an incredible range of precision and timing that opens up unbelievable combos and techniques. (The most well known being wave-dashing). In expert play, it isn’t uncommon to see a player entering four commands a second, each command within that second having to hit a certain precision. That is to say you cannot simply spam attacks for the same effect. The game is good, but honestly probably subpar for the fun multiplier free-for-all type battles. If it is just you and some friends wanting to bulls*** for a while, brawl is probably the objectively better game. But if you’re interested in tournament style competition and seeing how far you can manipulate and master a game, I’d argue no other game goes nearly as far. There is a reason this game is being played ten years later. The best and most defining statement about this game can be summed up with this observation: The better player will always win. N.

The only game I know that has kept the value of the entire game and gamecube worth far more than it would’ve been otherwise. It is truly one of the best things ever made.

This game is the highlight of my Gamecube collection. No matter what games have come out since the debut of the console, I still come back to this one to unwind and enjoy what many have called “a love letter from Nintendo, to Nintendo.” Each of the 25 playable characters has a wide range of strengths and weaknesses which makes the game extremely versatile. Even though it’s a fighting game it’s still kid-friendly because it features those cute and lovable Nintendo characters. Being an adult gamer, I am constantly impressed with the sophistication in modeling, backgrounds, and the overall attention to detail.

Arrived super early and it came with everything not one issue with the game or case ….

The SSB series is without a doubt an amazing series. This my only critique is that they might have done better waiting a year or two before releasing this game; mainly for better graphics and the fact that it was released 2 years after SSB64, where as the gap between SSBM and SSBB was nearly 10yrs. The space gives fans a longing for what bright ideas Masahiro Sakurai and the SSB team have next.
