Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a 2001 crossover fighting video game develop by HAL Laboratory and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. It features characters from Nintendo video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pokémon, among others. The stages and gameplay modes reference or take designs from these franchises as well.

Melee includes all playable characters from the first game and also adds characters from additional franchises such as Fire Emblem, of which no games had been release outside Japan at the time, in addition to new stages and gameplay modes. Like other games in the Smash Bros. series, Melee’s gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the fighting game genre, with a counter that measures damage with increasing percentages, representing the knockback the character will experience, rather than a depleting health bar seen in most fighting games.

Description

Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise. Let Nintendo’s stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. And in typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. But the actual combat isn’t as intricate as in other fighting games.

However, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee’s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. And the camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Moreover, Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.

As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game’s existence. But the single-player mode is decidedly weak. Also the game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. However, sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands.

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat.
  • Many new characters and other goodies to unlock.

Cons:

  • Single-player experience is comparatively weak.
  • Too cute for a few folks.
  • Adventure mode is boring.

Package arrived on time and came exactly how the shop described. In used- very good condition It is in excellent shape and my family has been enjoying it non-stop. I had played earlier versions of this game over at friend’s houses and really loved it and so when I decided to get a game consol I had to make this game part of my collection. It’s a great game for all ages although rated “T” for teen. Choose from several different Nintendo characters and battle with friends or computer characters of your choice. Choose several different varieties of game play, stages, and characters. Have never ending fun and the odds ever changing. I highly recommended this game choice.

Never got the chance to play the games when I was younger and the first I ever got to play was Brawl. With games, you never want to start at the end but the Super Smash games never go out of style. This game definitely stands up to the newer and shinier, Brawl.

If you ever wanted to beat the living daylights out of Mario, Link, Ness, Fox McCloud, and all the other over-rated characters Nintendo refuses to shut-up about, this is your chance. Well, this and the other Smash Bros game for Nintendo 64. Then there’s that NES emulation ROM game floating around on the internet…This has to be one of the best fighting games on this system, if the announcer doesn’t bother you. For God’s sake, Nintendo, why can’t you just give people the option of turning voices off?!!!!!The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is releatively simple so you don’t have to learn a lot of button combinations, there is a great selection of characters with lots of unlockables, you can earn trophies of past and present Nintendo characters, and the mini-games … well … the mini-games kinda suck. At least they’re not essential to winning the game. You can play as Mario of course, along with Link, Luigi*, Samus, Princess “Peach Toadstool, Bowser, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon, Fox McCloud, Ness, the Ice Climbers, Kirby, Pikachu, and Zelda. Yes, Zelda is finally playable on a U.S. Nintendo system, and she can turn into Shiek when you pull down on the control stick and press the B button simultaniously. If you intend to buy this game and want to find out for yourself who else is unlockable, don’t read the very last paragraph in this review.Except for in one of the special matches that don’t earn you anything, defeating your opponents is not about draining their ener.
