Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a 2001 crossover fighting video game develop by HAL Laboratory and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. It features characters from Nintendo video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pokémon, among others. The stages and gameplay modes reference or take designs from these franchises as well.

Melee includes all playable characters from the first game and also adds characters from additional franchises such as Fire Emblem, of which no games had been release outside Japan at the time, in addition to new stages and gameplay modes. Like other games in the Smash Bros. series, Melee’s gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the fighting game genre, with a counter that measures damage with increasing percentages, representing the knockback the character will experience, rather than a depleting health bar seen in most fighting games.

Description

Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise. Let Nintendo’s stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. And in typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. But the actual combat isn’t as intricate as in other fighting games.

However, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee’s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. And the camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Moreover, Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.

As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game’s existence. But the single-player mode is decidedly weak. Also the game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. However, sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands.

Pros:

  • Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat.
  • Many new characters and other goodies to unlock.

Cons:

  • Single-player experience is comparatively weak.
  • Too cute for a few folks.
  • Adventure mode is boring.

In buying the game ‘Super Smash Bros. Melee’ for the system Game Cube, my thoughts are heavily satisfied. I could not wait for this thing to arrive, I could barely even play anything else until it came. Besides the Game itself being a fantastic Battle game, the product was in fabulous condition. It was as the description said, and thus was trustworthy..It looked like they cleaned it really well, but it almost looks new. Great job.. THANK YOU for letting me re-live the past with Super Smash Brothers. -Aaron Kilpatrick Jones

Classics like Melee don’t come often, unless you update you’re Nintendo system everytime they make a new console, than you get one every four years. But if you’re a normal 20 something gamer who went with the X-Box and left the Wii to you’re grandparents, Brawl is not an option, luckily there’s Melee. A gamecube can be purchased from you’re local Game Exchange or Game Stop for around $40 (depending on the local economy prices will vary), or you can purchase one here, on retrolio.com for $19.99 plus shipping and handling. There’s no reason to not own this game. Order yours now.

I loved super smash bros ever since I played the first game on the Nintendo 64. I bought this game when I bought a used Gamecube one way. I was expecting many differences from the original, but I was pleasantly surprised! I was able to pick up this game quickly without much trouble. In melee, you can play through the new adventure mode or the classic adventure mode. Gosh, so many memories came flooding back when beating that evil large hand again.Any super smash bros game is beat played with at least one other human. It is still sort of fun playing against computers at the hardest level, but once you become a pro its easy to predict their moves. So I recommend finding some friends to play with to see this game’s full potential.I do admit I abuse captain falcon and kirby to the extreme. And I’m proud of it.

I got the game days before it was going to show up, and the product is in good condition. Of course the game is from 2001 (16 years old) so some scratches on the disc makes Adventure mode unplayable but who really cares. I now have the ultimate friend get together game, and i can now relive my childhood.

Simply one of the best fighting games, period. From a fun party game to a hard-core, technical tournament fighter, you can do it all with SSBM. Any Nintendo fan owes it to themselves to have this in their collection.
