Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee is a 2001 crossover fighting video game develop by HAL Laboratory and publish by Nintendo for the GameCube. It is the second installment in the Super Smash Bros. series. It features characters from Nintendo video game franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox and Pokémon, among others. The stages and gameplay modes reference or take designs from these franchises as well.
Melee includes all playable characters from the first game and also adds characters from additional franchises such as Fire Emblem, of which no games had been release outside Japan at the time, in addition to new stages and gameplay modes. Like other games in the Smash Bros. series, Melee’s gameplay system offers an unorthodox approach to the fighting game genre, with a counter that measures damage with increasing percentages, representing the knockback the character will experience, rather than a depleting health bar seen in most fighting games.
Description
Starting off with 14 characters (an additional 11 are waiting to be unlocked), the game has a pretty standard premise. Let Nintendo’s stars beat on each other until the timer runs out. However, a lot of emphasis is put on knocking opponents off ledges while avoiding the same fate. And in typical Nintendo manner, there are quite a few power-ups to assist you in the melee. But the actual combat isn’t as intricate as in other fighting games.
However, the ultra-cartoony layout of the many, many arenas sometimes adds a strategic element not usually found in similar titles.
Super Smash Bros. Melee’s strength lays in the mayhem created in four-player fights. And the camera does an excellent job of positioning itself so all combatants are constantly visible. Also, Melee sports some of the best visuals seen in a Nintendo product. All the characters are highly detailed, and the movements of each are smoothly infused with personality. Moreover, Donkey Kong lumbers and Princess Peach fights with grace.
As the multiplayer mode is the key reason for this game’s existence. But the single-player mode is decidedly weak. Also the game features an adventure mode that plays somewhat like an old-school, side-scrolling Mario game. However, sadly, despite its good looks, its gameplay is rather uninspired. This game is clearly at its best when there are two or more players with controllers in their hands.
Pros:
- Fantastic graphics and sound keep the action upbeat.
- Many new characters and other goodies to unlock.
Cons:
- Single-player experience is comparatively weak.
- Too cute for a few folks.
- Adventure mode is boring.

This game is one of the best on the market. It has brought hours of enjoyment for my son and his friends ( and me!).The graphics are great and the game play is very smooth. There are lots of options that make game play interesting … plus 20 or so characters to play with.Pausing the game during a battle captures some great action shots.Buy this game.

Ah… I remember spending hours playing this game with my friends growing up, it’s one of the reasons I liked going over to their houses so much. Hours and Hours spent destroying Mario… lol.Gameplay: Highly Interactive, fast pace combat. Requires fair timing and gobs of time to master any given character. Event modes are a lot of fun, such as the normal campaign and the Adventure mode. Adventure mode was a new take on the basic campaign mode, giving you access to running through a land accumalting damage before taking on bosses. Other training modes help, and the home run contest is new. 4/5Multiplayer: this game shines when you have multiple players involved. It’s main feature is a versus mode, which has many characters to chose from, tons of settings and maps. This feature is all about a party atmosphere. 5/5Controls: Game cube controller is a little difficult to get use to, but the controls are simiple, though difficult to learn for younger players (age 10 or below). 3/5Story: not much here, it’s a fighting game.Graphics: For a gamecube game, this game had fairly standard graphics for the time. 3/5Unlockables: Tons of unlockables, from maps/characters to trophies. hours and hours of gameplay required to unlock everything. 5/5Overall: A solid game, one of the more notable for the Gamecube. This game brings people together to battle there favorite Nintendo characters to the death. lot of fun, and replay value. best with friends. 4/5

I absolutely adore this game. In my opinion, it is way better than the original. There are so many more new things to unlock, like characters and stages. Trying to unlock some of the characters drove me a little crazy because I would get very frustrated. It’s a great game to play with company, or by yourself. There is a new Adventure mode that takes you through some cool levels, although after playing it ten or more times to try to unlock Young Link, it gets very old. I love how the 1 player mode randomly selects foes and stages, so it’s not like you’re always playing the same characters in the same stage as you did in the first Super Smash Brothers. The graphics are beautiful for a Gamecube game. If you played Super Smash Brothers right before you played this game, you would be amazed as I was. There are trophies in the game, and I don’t really like them too much. Like, if you beat the Adventure mode, you’d get a trophy of the character you used. It’s definitely very different, but I don’t really think it affects the game play too much. It’s more of an add-on than anything. I’m pretty sure the goal is to collect all of the trophies in the game, but there are a lot!So, if you’re a huge fan of Super Smash Brothers I highly recommend you buy this game. I’m working on saving up to buy Super Smash Brothers Brawl, but that’s another review.

Get this game and a good working GameCube controller for one of the best game experiences from Nintendo.

I loved super smash bros ever since I played the first game on the Nintendo 64. I bought this game when I bought a used Gamecube one way. I was expecting many differences from the original, but I was pleasantly surprised! I was able to pick up this game quickly without much trouble. In melee, you can play through the new adventure mode or the classic adventure mode. Gosh, so many memories came flooding back when beating that evil large hand again.Any super smash bros game is beat played with at least one other human. It is still sort of fun playing against computers at the hardest level, but once you become a pro its easy to predict their moves. So I recommend finding some friends to play with to see this game’s full potential.I do admit I abuse captain falcon and kirby to the extreme. And I’m proud of it.

Everyone says it is the best Super Smash Bros. game of its kind, but until SSB4 is released, I refuse to agree just yet. I do enjoy it more than the N64 version, and I do love playing Brawl. However, this game seems to have more variety than Brawl and the N64 version. This is why people call it the best. I can’t wait to unlock all of these characters that have and have not returned to Brawl (or the one due for release later this year) and attempt to use them in battle. Now if only I had an additional memory card…

The only game I know that has kept the value of the entire game and gamecube worth far more than it would’ve been otherwise. It is truly one of the best things ever made.

My 13 year old loves this game. It was a used game, though, and so he was frustrated by a couple of things. It did not come with a game card, which meant he couldn’t save any games. If he unlocks a character, it does not get saved. But he does enjoy playing it.

This game is still a blast to play years after it’s release.
