A series of grisly murders brings Lara Croft into conflict with a sinister alchemist from the past and a secret alliance of powerful individuals shrouded in mystery. At the center of the conflict are the Obscura paintings, five 14th-century pieces of art that the alchemist is desperate to repossess. Guide Lara through dark realms using her improved jumping ability, brainpower, upper body strength, stealth attacks, and skills in hand-to-hand combat. For the first time in a Tomb Raider game, Lara has the ability to talk to characters, and the choices you make in conversation will affect Lara’s route through the game.

So you just bought the first TR on PS2 what can you expect out of it? I will tell you. First off the graphics are definately improved by a lot. However as others have pointed out this is no breathtaking stuff. It is for modern standards graphically speaking, slightly above average. And yes the controls are shockingly hard to master. Maybe though it’s because I have played all those other TR’s and my brain has been programmed to play the way those others did. The game goes back to the old days of TR though with very little combat and a lot of just exploring and wandering through puzzle areas. Frankly I see that as an improvement. Also the combat and general tone of the game had gone back towards realism, Lara can no longer manage quite as shocking feats as she used to. She can no longer push blocky things 3 times her size(TR1) nor can she take a beating without blinking(TR2), nor can she hold her own weight up(such as the shimmy trick) for all eternity. Even her breast size seems to be more in proportion! But the greatest malady that befalls it is fans expectations. All those bad reviews are not as merited as they would appear. Even my review has so far focused on the bad, while in reality this game is actually quite good. Fans are comparing this game to their expectations and that’s not a good thing! They are having knee jerk responses to it. What you really have to consider is that the whole TR thing is very very old. The Lara Croft Character that TR revolves.

First time playing it and it’s amazing but so hard, lol. I can’t wait to continue playing it (yes, I haven’t finish it yet lol)

Okay, personally, I liked what I played of the game. I’ve played it occasionally with my friend and I used to be a Tomb Raider Addict, I had all of them and only ever beat Chronicles because of the vast amount of cheats that were helpful. Now, AOD is a pretty good game, but I agree with most when saying it’s not as great as it could’ve been. I really loved her new outfit, and the fact that she was framed for the murder. The plot was very intruiging (sp?). The only thing I had a GIGANTIC problem with was the controls. Firstly, I WANT THE D-PAD BACK! I had trillions of problems playing with those horrific controls. And switching the jump and role button *vomits* bad mistake. Now people will keep getting confused unless AOD is the player’s first TR game. I honestly WILL buy it when I get my own PS2, but my favourite games are Chronicles and TR 2 out of them all. Maybe if AOD had her home in it, and a new obstacle course, it would’ve been better. Also, I hate that strength thing, I miss her being able to hang for as long as you want, it creates for a crappy game. But those are the only flaws I found. I loved the rest of the game, and the option to run around and do your own thing. I will buy the game and hopefully this review helped to forwarn people about the possibly confusing new handeling of Lara Croft. Have fun playin AOD! I suggest you buy it ;)

I’m surprised that this game has received so many negative reviews. It’s the first Tomb Raider game that I’ve ever played and, having read the bad reviews, I was expecting it to be truly abysmal. Were people playing a different game to me?? The graphics are excellent! The gameplay is thoroughly enjoyable, with lots of puzzles, etc. and it’s HUGE! Lara does take some getting used to in the way she moves but I’ve had no real difficulty, and I’m a complete novice. The scenarios are very varied. True, the first few levels are set on the streets of Paris and are a bit boring but then it really takes off. The sewers under the city, inside the Louvre museum and the archealogical dig in the Louvre basement. And then you get a colossal, beautiful tomb to explore: the Tomb of the Ancients with the Hall of the Seasons and many sub levels leading from it, like the Breath of Hades or Neptune’s Hall! The rendering here is very beautiful, with lots of jumping, climbing, lever-pulling, creature-killing, puzzle-solving, etc. I loved every second of it. And then you’re still only half-way through the game! I can’t wait to play Legends and Anniversary, as well as trying out The Last Revelation. Give Angel of Darkness a try. It’s a lot of fun and nowhere near as bad as people are making out.

well first off to fans of the series its quite different. think tombraider 3 plus metal gear solid or something. the controls are also completely different and take some getting used to. right off the bat you may find navigating the escape from rooftops and navigating hte parisian ghetto difficult but once you get the controls down you’re in business. i think that this game seems a bit less difficult that previous games so it probably wont take as long to complete though it is still a fun ride. new features in this game include the use of money, the rpg-esque character interaction, a new playable character and a host of new weapons, etc. another superb feature is the ability to save anywhere anytime (even onthe console platform versions)! the graphics are superb but sometimes the frame rate slows down a bit…its my opinion that this game is pushing the resources of hte ps2 to the limit. all in all its fun though you’ll be surprised by the general feel of the game. its sort of dark in a way. if you like tomb raider you’ll like this game, if you’re new to the series you might want to rent it first to make sure its your thing.

controls are funky but i like that the game itself explores a new way of game-play. i personally like that you have to go back to older levels. it makes it seem like real life almost :) love it and the TR series

I am fed up with all of this criticism on Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. Since the first ever Tomb Raider release, back in 1996, I’ve been a fan of the game, and because of that I ignored some flaws on the Tomb Raider movie. (Should I expect more from the 2nd installment?)Tomb Raider games always offered loads of fun, killing all sorts of things from plants to T-Rexes, exotic locations and mysterious objects, this game is no different, but the far fetched plots are `almost` gone. I agree whith every single person that this game’s controls are difficult, but in no time, you’ll be able to do some new acrobacies! It’s been 8 years that Lara Croft has been an icon in the video game era, and it should remain on that spot for a long time. Of course I just hope the next games (Eidos and Core has promissed a trilogy) don’t be delayed too much, but oh well, it will be worth the wait.

I was surprised when I found this game I only wish it had the book.
