A series of grisly murders brings Lara Croft into conflict with a sinister alchemist from the past and a secret alliance of powerful individuals shrouded in mystery. At the center of the conflict are the Obscura paintings, five 14th-century pieces of art that the alchemist is desperate to repossess. Guide Lara through dark realms using her improved jumping ability, brainpower, upper body strength, stealth attacks, and skills in hand-to-hand combat. For the first time in a Tomb Raider game, Lara has the ability to talk to characters, and the choices you make in conversation will affect Lara’s route through the game.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, has a wonderful storyline that takes us away from the Tombs of ancient civilizations and brings us to the sinister underbelly of Lara’s world that though she disdains, must experience nonetheless. Even Indiana Jones had to pull himself away from swashbuckling “archeology” to teach at a University and engage with people in a normal situation. This game displays the turbulent lifestyle one who robs tombs for a living must undergo on a daily basis, because what you stole could just as easily be stolen from you.Although, I’ve read many reviews slamming the controls for the game, I didn’t have any difficulty controlling Lara after a few minutes. I haven’t experienced any delay in excecuting the various actions and though there are bugs in the system, to tell you truth, isn’t anything I haven’t experienced before with earlier incarnations of Tomb Raider (particularly Tomb Raider II).In the end, this is a very engaging and entertaining game that will keep you occupied for hours.

All right, let me be clear about this right up front: It’s definitely a Tomb Raider game. If you’ve played, you know what that means, so I won’t waste your time. If you haven’t played it, you probably wouldn’t buy this one, so why waste your time? Moving on…Grinching (complaints)What happened to the side-step function? It’s a real pain to manuever Lara to where she’s supposed to stand, sometimes. Just moving a smidgen to the left or right, or turning a few degrees to be able to grab "X" could have been easily bypassed with the old Side-Step. And I didn’t see a good reason for taking it out, so why is it gone? Use the R3 or L3 buttons, after all.Not really pleased with the lack of an auto-centering camera. The default placement for the camera sitting behind and above Lara’s head is useful when you’re running in circles, and yet it too seems to have taken this time to go on vacation. That’s frustrating.WHAT is up with switching the controls around? Again, there doesn’t seem to be a reason for it except to make veteran players spaz out from time to time. At first, that’s infuriating, then annoying, then funny, then back to annoying. And it was unnecessary. His majesty does not approve.Huzzahs (kudos)The graphics are great. Things don’t turn all blocky when you stand next to them. There are some lighting issues on items you’re picking up, but that’s not a big deal. And sure, there’s some slow-down here and there, but as one reviewer noted, it’s Matrix-y. I can live wi.

I’m a huge Tomb Raider fan, and have been ever since the first one was released. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness received so much negative feedback, but for me, I absolutely love it! It’s my favorite in the series to date (I’m sure that’ll change once Tomb Raider(2013) is released on March 5, 2013). I had this game for PC for years, but I really wanted to experience it on PS2 because of the 360 camera rotation. Though the controls were difficult at first, I adjusted to them rather quickly. Great buy! :)

Since there is no shortage of negative reviews for this game, I’m going to focus on the positive aspects (IMO) of this title. First, somethings you should know to make it more enjoyable: there are no automatic save/check points, so you can’t manually save too often. Next, there is slowdown but I noticed that a few times I was at fault for it b/c I had the "walk" function active. Some complain about the grip meter (a time limit, basically) that appears when you grab a ledge, but I thought it added a welcome sense of urgency and tension to the game. Lastly, when you are going to KO someone via a stealth assault, your target must stand still BEFORE you attack. The parts I enjoyed: the lack of tombs. You will visit an open city to explore, talk to people, find & pawn items), a techno club, treacherous sewers, the Louvre Museum, a laboratory/compound reminiscent of Resident Evil 2 & a military base that looks to be inspired by the Splinter Cell series, as well as other non-tomb areas. The stealth & targeting systems were easy enough to use & the story involves Lara being accused of murder & on the run from the police as well solving a case involving a serial killer. The graphics are clean & nice for 2003, but the game is over a decade old & counting- so you should know & accept its graphical short comings instead of complaining about them. I wasn’t a TR fan before playing this game, so its departure from the previous games’ formula & attempts to modernize the series appea.

I loved this game when I was a kid but couldn’t remember why I returned it, now I do because it was used and it said Fatal Error: RMX Version Mismatch. This game is so awesome! I tested it when I got it in the mail and it works perfectly now.

Maybe it’s because this is the first Tomb Raider game I ever played. Maybe it’s because I’m not constantly sitting by my PS2, unless I’m combing the Internet for game guides. But I didn’t think this game was as horrid as several reviewers have said.Being an occasional gamer, it took me a while to get used to the controls. I’ve always been slow to catch on to analog, regardless of what game I’m playing. But once I got used to them, I was an old pro and Lara was moving around without problem. As far as graphics are concerned, I’m not a big stickler for that kind of thing. I like adventure/RPG games. I like the story, which I thought was creative and interesting.Having never played previous TR games (which I hope to change), I don’t know exactly how the story differs, except that it seems, judging by other reviews, that Lara spends more time in the real world instead of spending her entire adventure in a bunch of caves. My opinion is this: How many mummies, scorpions and other jungle creatures can she kill before it gets old? I thought the variation of settings just in this game alone was very cool. It had caves, labs, an insane asylum, cities, churches, sewers, etc. Lots of games that I’ve played can’t boast that kind of diversity in setting.Overall, I thought this was a fun game to play, and if you’re not afraid of change, go ahead and buy it.
