Ultimate Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man is a 2005 action-adventure video game base on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man and the comic book of the same name. The game was publish by Activision for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Nintendo DS in September 2005.

Like Treyarch’s previous Spider-Man title, Spider-Man 2, the game incorporates an open world design. Allowing players to freely explore fictitious representations of Manhattan and Queens when not completing main missions to advance the narrative. One notable feature exclusive to this game is the ability to play as both Spider-Man and Venom. Who control differently and have exclusive storylines, which cross over with each other. The game’s storyline is set within the Ultimate Marvel universe, three months after the Venom story arc from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. And centers on Spider-Man’s investigation of the company Trask Industries and their connection to the creation of the Venom symbiote and his parents’ death. Meanwhile, Venom must avoid constant capture attempts by Bolivar Trask, who wants to recreate the symbiote’s capabilities.

Ultimate Spider-Man receive generally positive reviews from critics across all platforms, and is retrospectively regard as one of the best Spider-Man games ever made.

Gameplay

Ultimate Spider-Man is a third-person action-adventure video game, set in an open world base on Manhattan and parts of Queens. Players take on the role of Spider-Man or Venom and complete missions linear scenarios with set objectives to progress through the story. The player starts in story mode where they can only free roam as Spider-Man. And the game automatically switches between Spider-Man and Venom during missions. After the main story completion, the player can switch between the two characters at any time.

The two characters play differently from one another. Spider-Man is more agile and uses webs to travel through the city, being able to either web swing or web zip. Similarly to Spider-Man 2, the player needs to be close to buildings and manually attach webs to them. Spider-Man can also use his webs during fights, immobilizing enemies for a few seconds, or grabbing and throwing them around. Once an enemy is down, the player needs to quickly web them in order to immobilize them for good, otherwise they will get up and continue attacking Spider-Man.

Venom

Venom is much more aggressive and uses his tentacles to pull himself to buildings, much like Spider-Man’s web zip. He can also perform massive jumps and grab enemies. Whom he can either throw away, crush against the ground, or consume. While playing as Venom, players can consume non-player characters to regenerate health. Normal pedestrians usually grant the player more health points than enemies. While free roaming as Venom, he will slowly lose health regardless of taking damage or not, requiring the player to constantly consume people to regenerate health. Venom can throw cars and go on destructive rampages, earning police attention. The more destruction Venom causes, the more police will attempt to stop him.

As the game progresses, Spider-Man and Venom will have certain “City Goals” to accomplish in order to continue the storyline. These consist of various side missions, such as races, combat tours, and collectibles.

Handheld versions

The Game Boy Advance version of Ultimate Spider-Man is a side-scroller beat ’em up, divide into seven “issues”, each containing three chapters. Both Spider-Man and Venom are playable, and each has his own series of levels. In addition to the two main characters, the game features three additional bosses: Shocker, Silver Sable, and Carnage. This version includes a limited supply of Spider-Man’s web fluid, which can be refill by picking up special markers scatter throughout levels or drop by enemies. Additionally, players may choose to collect hidden power-ups to gain more web fluid capacity or gain moves and abilities for both Spider-Man and Venom.

The Nintendo DS version of Ultimate Spider-Man is a side-scroller beat ’em up, albeit it features a 3D environment. Both Spider-Man and Venom are playable, and each play differently from the other. In the Spider-Man levels, most of the game happens on the top screen and the touch screen is only use for selecting special attacks and operating certain objects (moving heavy objects, opening broken elevator doors, etc.). In the Venom levels, the game switches to the touch screen, and players are able to grab and throw objects or enemies using Venom’s tentacles, or attack by tapping the screen. The game also features a slightly modify storyline and a multiplayer mode, where players can unlock different characters and arenas for a head-to-head fight.

The controls were a little different than Spider-Man 2 (by the same maker) which I didn’t understand, but you get used to it quick enough. The look of the game is great and a lot of fun to play. All of the Spider-Man titles have been great.

  2. David Watkins

    Game came in great condition

  3. SilasSchmeler

    The game works great.

  4. JPersonJ

Well this game has aged a bit since I played it last, it was still fun. A lot easier this time round, but that’s a decade of growth on my end. Story is weird and passive fans won’t recognize many characters. Playing as Venom is still awesome, but you have to beat the game to free roam with him. Some bosses are just tedious. But traveling is fun, more so than combat, and you’ll enjoy you day playing it.

You can play as Venom and swallow innocent people, including that annoying little boy who kept letting go of his stupid balloon in the second game. Need I say more?A fun game,Good gameplay,Comic book-style cell-shaded art style,Highly recommend to any Spiderman fan.

Per my son,"it’s kinda cool" However he has all but one, the latest eludes himThe u have it. An addition welcomed

  7. Super Cool

As the title indicates Ultimate Spiderman has a very short single-player story, which can probably be completed in six hours or even less. The length of the game, however, is considerably lengthened side-tasks most of which are web-swinging races, some of which are gang beat-em-ups, and occasionally rescuing and searching for hidden tokens. These side-tasks are by no means side-quests and are by no means as entertaining as the main story, so why do they comprise the majority of the game’s length is a question that will boggle the minds of gamers. This game had the potential to achieve greatness, but falls short due to shortness of story. The inked-cartoonish look of Spiderman is great although not as spectacular as the model Spiderman in Spiderman the Movie game, which I have also reviewed. I have yet to play Spiderman II, but at some point I plan to. However, the short story of Ultimate Spiderman is far superior in gameplay than the gameplay of Spiderman the Movie. Playing as both Spiderman and Venom is great and both characters are well-designed with fabulous inked-comic book looks, which in a way maybe better than the more deeply modeled look in Spiderman the Movie. Play as Spiderman you feel both swift and powerful, while playing as Venom you feel a great sense of power and monstrous rage. It is great. The majority of missions are as Spiderman, which is fine. The most spectacular parts of this game are the boss battles. Wow, you truly fight gigantic characters.

    This game is so fun!!!!!!

  10. Awesome-O

Ultimate Spider-Man is a fun waste of almost 5 hours of button mashing and web swinging. You play as spider-man and the villan “Venom”. Playing as Venom is a fun add-on to the game for sure. Possibly a Must have for intense Spider-Man fans.
