In All-Star Baseball 2004, Acclaim Sports tries to reclaim the title of ‘Best Baseball Game’ for the console market. Surprisingly, it does a good job living up to expectations. The first thing you’ll notice when you turn on the game is video of past great baseball moments combined with highlights from the 2002 season. Selection screens have been massively overhauled as well compared to ASB 2003. Graphically, the game has never been better. Grainy video effects are used in the ‘Scenario’ challenge which look great and make you feel like you’re playing a classic game. The best part of this game hands down is the ‘Franchise’/’Expansion’ mode. It may very well be the best simulation of Major League Baseball ever released. Like in ASB 2003, you can manage a team for thirty seasons, but that’s where the similarities end. There are now two segments of the minor league system for each team (a high minors and a low minors), a 40 man roster, a Rule V draft, an amateur draft, ability to trade anyone on your team w/o calling them up to the big show, and a player editor for start. Detailed player ratings are back as well. Literally, one could spend hours just tinkering with your team (and all 30 if you wanted to. There is an option to control all team’s General Managers) and not play the game itself at all. Did I mention downloadable rosters as well? No more going through the teams one-by-one. (You need a network adapter plus a broadband connection to use this, FYI.)Another mod.

I can’t believe there are some people who give this game 5 stars. I have played ASB games for years now and 2003 is the best one yet. What did they do with the camera angle? How about the lousy frame rate? How about catching the ball 3 feet from your glove? No, no, no, this game is NOT 5 STARS, do not confuse consumers please! It has cool things like mound visits and pitcher worm ups but the gameplay sucks. Baseball is about pitcher versus batter duel. THERE IS NO SUCH THING IN THIS GAME. If you want a pitcher-batter duel get MVP 2003. The gameplay is fast but at least you get to pitch like a pro.

I found this to be one of the best baseball simulations I’ve played yet…and I’ve played quite a few. Baseball sims are generally pretty tough to make realistic in gameplay, either they skew too much to offense or defense, but this one had really good gameplay and a great options menu between games, with only a few exceptions. My gripes with it are:1) Random errors not always consistent with player’s ability. There is no way Gary Sheffield has twenty errors in right field by the All-Star break unless one of his arms fell off.2) Strikeouts too low for pitchers. Even Pedro Martinez can only get six or seven per game on a good day. But the slightly better-than-reality defense balances this out well.3) Too many top players missing from the Legends lists. I like Schmidt and Killebrew and Stargell. But where are Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Carl Yaztremski, and even George Brett (to name a few)? I liked Thurman Munson too, but Carlton Fisk was better and I’d have preferred that they drop some of the marginal “legends” like Billy Martin or Steve Lyons in place of some guys who were actually Hall-of-Famers…the sun doesn’t rise and set on New York Yankees baseball (and they didn’t even include two of the Yankees’ top five players). The Negro League players were an excellent touch, though.4) Hitting was a bit tough at first, but after I realized that you have to move the cursor around as the pitch is coming in at you, it got a lot easier. Of cou.

I recently rented this game because of all the mixed reviews I read and I didn’t want to buy a game that I wouldn’t end up playing. But this is by far the best baseball game out right now. There are many different options in this game compared to MVP(some say better than ASB) And as far as the hitting goes, I actually think it was easy to pick up on and it’s realistic. If your batter is good against righty then the batting icon is larger than when he faces a lefty, And that chages from player to player. I don’t own and hardly play baseball games but this game made me enjoy baseball much more than I thought I could. The only downside is that high 90’s fastballs are incredibly hard to hit (once the pitcher gets tired its gets easy) and there are more errors that there should be (still its not hard to deal with) but other than those two things I can’t complain. So I give ASB 2004 a 5 star and proclaim it as the best baseball came out, hands down!

I went to Blockbuster about a week ago knowing i was going to get some kind of baseball game. When i skimmed through all the baseball games, i noticed that High Heat 2004 and MVP 2003 were out of stock. The only one left was All-Star Baseball 2004. I was already a little dissapointed because MVP 2003 looked like a really good game with high reviews. As i started to play the game my options were opening. It was alright playing it for the first time. The simple, although sometimes a little lazy on the throws, which can a guy off when the computers game-winning run is tagging up at 3rd.The pitching is also simple and easy. Your pitchers will not get very many strikeouts, probably only 3-5 in 9 innings. It is very easy to strikeout batters if you put the settings on “probable pitching” which is simply when the computer throws the first three pitches for you.Hitting is kind of difficult at first. You almost always make contact, but 75% of the time fly-out or ground-out. When you think about it though that is really what happens most of the time in real basbeall. Hitting homeruns is very hard. I usually hit one every 3 games. Sometimes though I’ll hit 5 in one game! So it really depends on if your game is on or not that day.Overall this is a good game. Difficult at first but you really start to get the hang of it.Oh and the managing is great! I love being a GM. This game has amazing GM controls. Bringing up minors and the Rule 5 draft. This game is very good.
12 year old gamer in-raged by the disaster called All-Star Baseball 2003 –
All-Star Baseball 2003, What can I say. Graphics- great. Features- Outstanding. Gameplay- Someone cry me a river! The reason this game gets 1 star is because this games gameplay is at an all time low! And as we all know you can’t have fun in a game that has horrible gameplay. First off, the battin coursor. You have to guess where the pitch will be thrown before the ball is pitched (duh) and if you have “Spidey Sences” piece o’ cake! But I’m no super hero. This means if you get lucky, you’ll get between 2 and 4 hits after 9 inings. Pitching isn’t great nor is it a disaster waiting to happen, kinda in the middle. There’s not much to be said about it. I wanted to rent MVP Baseball 2003 but got stuck with the only baseball game in stock this one! if you want a great baseball game AVOID ALL-Star Baseball 2003! Now I’m gonna continue shopping on Toys R US.com and buy MVP Baseball 2003.

I have played this game for years, I just bought another copy cause I had lost my original and got the urge again. Can’t go wrong for $1-$2. It can be quite glitchy, but thats part of the fun in my opinion!

After Triple Play 2002 ended up a coaster, the case a leveler for a wobbly table, I was reluctant to get back into the baseball mode for fear that electronic baseball peaked with Intellivision. As Steve Lyons and Thom Brenneman introduced Dave Roberts and my Dodgers stepped into the batters box at PNC Park, I was already giddy. The Smashmouth lead-in (second only to GT3 in excellence) and the game set-up are the elements of baseball even Bud Selig can’t take away.Sadly, Kip Wells three-hit me through eight innings, but K-Brown, Guillermo Mota, and Eric Gagne were able to match. After 11 innings, one run per team was scored.(I’m glad to hear I’m not the only person having a hard time swinging the bat.) I’ll spend a bit of time in the batting cages, but in the meanwhile it is a treat and a tribute to the game to watch two teams demo a three game series out. I feel almost like the 10-year-old who watched Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey lock up Blue Heaven’s infield for the first time.Thank you, Acclaim, for bringing respectability back to baseball.

This game is a classic and I highly recommend it. It gives you the chance to have your own expansion team and play against the other major league teams. You don’t see this option in games that much anymore.

Just got the game and have been playing for a little bit now. Unbelievable!!! The graphics, sound, commentary, crowd are amazing. Real to life. I have been onboard with ASB since 2002 and this is many many times above last years game. Very possibly the best baseball game ever.
