When I first heard that Obsidian (Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords) was teaming up with Sega to create the first-ever espionage, I was genuinely excited about the prospect. Two years of waiting later, and over a day and a half of playing, I am reasonably satisfied with Alpha Protocol albeit with some moderate concerns.Story:The story is definitely on par with anything Robert Ludlum ever wrote. You are Edward Thornton, a recently recruited spy to stop terrorists from blowing stuff up. Along the way you encounter beautiful dames, evil bad guys, double agents, friends turned bad, deception, drama, blah, blah, blah. Very contemporary and fairly compelling as one would expect from a spy game. Wanna know more? Play the game!Game Play:When I researched and read about Alpha Protocol, two games struck me as strikingly similar in nature and would be the basis for comparison: Splinter Cell and Mass Effect. One for it’s stealthy nature and the other for it’s strikingly similar game play respectively. While playing through Alpha Protocol with a neutral observer (a poor soul unfortunate enough to venture to my place for a free beer and ended up having to watch me play for a few hours) we found ourselves consistently comparing Alpha Protocol to the two games mentioned. The game centers around three basic mindsets of spy game play; professional, suave, and aggressive or Jason Bourne, James Bond, and Jack Bauer respectively (my apologies if you get none of the spy pop culture.

When Alpha Protocol first made its way into the Previews section of several video-game sites/magazines, I was excited. Developer Obsidian proved itself a worthy weaver of tales, and this looked very much like a third-person Deus Ex with a Mass Effect-style conversation system. While that is an impossible expectation to live up to, I really don’t think it’s worthy of the panning it’s received from some people. Alpha Protocol is a good game that I enjoyed playing through — staying engrossed throughout. The Good:- The story is decent. It’s got a typical spy style overall, but the real quality comes in its branches. Depending on what you do and to whom, it goes off in different directions. And not just one or two; whole people will either become your best buddies or dead. I like the feeling that I’m causing all this to happen.- RPG elements are always welcome. You’re constantly improving a variety of skills. I was able to tweak my character to be the stealthy melee expert who’s good with a pistol that I always try to be in games.- Non-linear missions work. This was one of the best parts of Deus Ex (my #1 game of all time), and AP does a good job with this. You can infiltrate silently or guns-blazing, and either could work. I’m personally a completionist — finding every item and dispatching ever guard. I could do that fine in AP.The Bad:- It’s not the prettiest game. I didn’t find the graphics as bad as some reviews, but this definitely didn’t knock my socks off. There are also a.

This is the first espionage game I bought and I love it. The gameplay is good and the weapons are too. The graphics are surprisingly good as well for an old game is not that bad Overral this game gets a 10.

For those who enjoyed the nonlinearity and combat/stealth/hacking elements of games like System Shock and Deus Ex, this game will be right up your alley. If you like the decision-making and dialogue options of Mass Effect, this game will also be up your alley. If bugs, lack of polish and AI issues scare you and/or turn you off completely, then do not get this game.If you can accept a game that needed another 6 months of work but is still playable in it’s rough and unpolished form, then get this game. It’s unique, has a lot of options, and though the storyline is lackluster, the way the story bends around your decisions is very impressive.

Another example of a great game that got looked over. No its not perfect, It has its little faults but the only con i had with it was the AI could have been better but then again I’ve seen much worse AI.Here’s the deal, your a agent for a super secret branch for the US, The nearest thing i would call you as a more aggressive Sam Fisher type or at least that’s the vibe i got from the character. You travel to places around the world trying to uncover the truth after getting set up to take the fall for a job. What really makes the game is the story and the decisions you make, your constantly trying to figure out what every factions agenda is and everyone has a hidden agenda and fun part is trying to weed them out and find the truth and clear your name. You do this by your decisions in your conversations and finding evidence while sneaking around or going in all Rambo. The conversations you have with factions and their leaders is a thing to behold, I wish every game of this type would use this method because everything you say really matters, Say the wrong thing to the wrong person can lead to learning nothing or everything so it didn’t take long to learn to save before going out to meet someone for a talk. You also can have love interests in the game with different girls if you play your cards right. (you can look up on the net how to romance each woman). There has been a lot of talk about romancing the mute on forums as most do find her a cute little thing, The reason you cant is.

This game caught my interest about a month or so before it’s release and based on the generic descriptions in the previews, I was already on board. A modern day, spy centered RPG by the same designers of Knights of the Old Republic 2? (One of my favorite RPGs ever in terms of character and story depth.) Sign me up.Then about a week before release, the reviews started rolling in. Horrible graphics they said, glitches that render the game almost unplayable they said, frustrating control scheme. Almost everything that could be wrong with a game was listed as being wrong with this game, and obviously I was disheartened.I eventually passed on this game during launch day and started looking for the next great RPG, which had me waiting for Fallout New Vegas basically, but after a week or so of waiting, I came across an Alpha Protocol review here. The reviewer, another RPG fan like myself, pointed out that reviews from “mainstream” game sites like IGN and Gamespot, are often not only biased, but different features weigh more heavily to them then to the average gamer. For example, games with “amazing graphics”, like God of War III tend to end up with high scores no matter how dull, short and repetitive the rest of the game happens to be. Yet on the other hand, things like depth and plot don’t seem to count for anything in the mainstream game critic world.I also get the feeling that certain games are given artificially good scores based on how much hype is surrounding that particular ga.

There’s no doubt that the reason you play this game is because the thought of a “SPY RPG” sounds pleasing to the ear. If you want an A-list action game please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. What I like about it–In depth story-Your decisions really affect the story-Likeable characters-Definitely a multi-play-through game-Can’t beat the price of this game. I felt guilty I spent less than 12 bucks on itWhat I didn’t like–Dopey AI-Glitchy graphics-Not as much customization for the main agent you play asLike I said the reason you play this game is for the story. This game will definitely put the choices you make into considerable effect. There’s a lot of freedom in the choices which will lead to different outcomes. This ain’t the type of game that has different choices which lead to the same unisnspired outcome, treating your choices as if they never really made a difference. There’s a real ripple-effect that goes on with your decisions. Enjoy!

If you aren’t a patient person, this game is not for you. Now, that’s not to say the game is slow, because it’s not. But there are true flaws in this game that you need to accept before you can really enjoy this game. So let me lay it out:The Good:-Strong story, with characters that feel real (within reason, I’m looking at you, SIE. And you, Brayko). The story is complex, and actually makes you think.-The gameplay mechanics wise, is pretty bad. Glitching, clipping, getting stuck in floors or in walls, the cover system…but what I mean is the way it works in terms of the story. What the gameplay does do is make most situations very tense, and make you wonder might be happening next. AND, unlike a game I liken this to (Mass Effect), I loved the ability to be able to play through using stealth. The option is always on the table, and I liked that.-Your choices matter. Now, your choices matter in Mass Effect, but nowhere near the way they matter in Alpha Protocol. And I’m glad AP didn’t limit the types of choices you get to make. Because there are a number of big choices you get to make, along with more simple ones. The one drawback to this system is the conversation system. Sometimes the choices they give you aren’t clear. For instance, at the end, one of the choices is “Betrayal.” What does that mean? Am I going to betray someone? Or am I going to talk about being betrayed? Along with that drawback is is the timer. It’s both good and bad. It adds a dynamic feel to conversations.
