Atari 2600 isn’t going to be anything like your Playstation 3. It won’t be anything like your Gamecube. It doesn’t even begin to function like your Sega Genesis, or NES for that matter. After all, it was the first system to where you could simply insert a cartridge instead of having to switch out the motherboard or whatever, and it had a lot of games made for it. The graphics (obviously) are terrible, the sound (obviously) a simple beeps or tones, but the games are classic in this age. Pacman, Pong, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, those are just a few to name. There are hundreds of simplistic yet addictive games, and was almost like the iPhone of 1978 in terms of library! Stupid, simple, pointless games that everybody fell in love with and still love today. It is a little piece of history you can buy and play!

You know what’s pathetic? People my age (15 or so) have been suckered into games like Call of Duty. No one in my school even pays attention to Mario, Pac-Man, Sonic, or Halo (And that’s in the same genre!). But if you are one to find the good in classics like I did, then prepare yourself for the Atari 2600, the game system that pretty much started it all (Yes, there’s the Odyssey, but let’s not count that)! The Atari was a system that had video games with really primitive graphics. The sound effects were your average beeps and bloops, and there’s often no music (Not the case with Pitfall 2, though). Most of the games had a pretty simple objective: To get the highest score possible. To go with that theme, there are also lots of arcade ports, such as Pac-Man, Mario Bros, Frogger, Asteroids, Pole Position, Dig Dug, etc. And wouldn’t you know it: The system and games were successful, critically and commercially.Perhaps one of the best things about these games now is that they cost a bit under $5 each, most of the time. So if you pick up an Atari, be sure to go find some good Atari games out there. I bet your $20 could find you a pretty good amount of video games that would be very worth playing. Some games I recommend are Pitfalls 1 & 2, the 80s arcade ports, and Spider-Man.

The Atari 2600 popularized the changeable cartridges and allowed us to play arcade games at home. An extremely large amount of games focus on high scores rather than beat a game. I think IGN stated it pretty well that the 2600 is the console the entire video game industry is built on. My all time favorite game on the console is Pitfall!
