It is REALLY hard but overall a good game. The only way that it’s enjoyable though is doing the 99 live cheat at the begining. After that, it’s a really fun game.Let me tell you, the only way you’ll get through this game is with that cheat.

This is your typical Contra game albeit witha much harder difficulty! I played this for numerous hours and I have to say….Konami has truely stayed faithful to the tried and true formula of run and gun. Be warned weary “save” gamers: This game is total old school and you only get continues..and not many at that.Thank you retrolio!

In the mid to late eighties a run and gun shoot ’em up game called Contra hit store shelves. It’s a game mostly remembered for being insanely difficult. So much so that the developers gave players a code (which would later be dubbed the “Classic Konami Code”) that would give them thirty lives and they’d still end up seeing the game over screen. But with persistence (and a good memory) Contra could be conquered. Later, we got Super C as a follow up and later the all time best: Contra III: The Alien Wars. Unfortunately, after that, many Contra games to follow (save for Hard Corps on the Genesis) were not good games at all. The Playstation games were said to be the worst of the series, and even though Shattered Soldier returned to old roots, it just wasn’t enough. Now, fifteen years after Contra III: The Alien Wars, we finally get a true Contra sequel. And it’s everything the original Contra back in the 80’s was. That is to say it’s insanely hard, you only have so many lives and you’ll see that game over screen millions of times, maybe within the first level alone. When I say this game is difficult, it’s no joke. This game was specifically made for Contra fans. So if you didn’t like the series before, you are surely not going to like this game by any means.Contra 4 takes the basic run and gun gameplay of the original and does nothing to mess with a tried and true formula. You’ll go through the levels blasting anything and everything that moves while you jump from one.

As expected from a contra game this is a very fun video game. I like games that are hard, not impossible or frustrating, and this game more than meet my expectations, the game is hard to complete (of course I’m talking about the hard mode, the easy mode is, well… easy). The challenge mode is great also.

this game is hard!!!I think its probably so short they didnt want you to finish it two hours after you turn it on.

Konami knew what they were doing when they gave Wayforward (Mighty Switch Force, Mighty Flip Champs, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Quit Stealing our Garbage!) the keys to Contra’s 20th Anniversary game. This may not have anyone involved from previous games working on it, but you’d never know it by playing. This game is like a, “Best Hits” album of a game. Everything about this reminds you of your favorite parts from the original NES Contra, Super C, Contra III, Contra Hard Corps, etc. They even make sure to include Bill, Lance and their cheesy 80’s names from the first game, Mad Dog and Scorpion – they made them all characters in this one. The first level is a jungle reminiscent of the first stage from the NES classic, but it’s all new and plays with your expectations. You expect to fight a tower boss at the end, with an “eye laser” on the bottom and two guns on the top – but you don’t expect it to explode, and then have a new dual screen tower appear in it’s place. That’s the genius; they toy with your expectations, instead of merely recreating it. The core action is as solid as it’s ever been – although I miss being able to hold both triggers and fire both guns at the same time, like in Contra III: The Alien Wars. But what’s here is as refined as Contra’s ever been. This is fun. This is challenging. It looks like a lost 16 bit gem, and it has a rockin’ soundtrack. And it’s got Contra’s soul; all the way down to it’s core. Fantastic game. The only th.

Contra… Ahh who doesen’t remeber that game for the Nintendo 8 bit??I remeber playing that game every so often, but only as a rental, since I could never seem to find the game in any shelves at the time. I remeber playing it with my brothers, and was having a great time..Now Contra 4 is here, and boy does it bring back old memories. I still remeber how hard Contra was for the NES, and I think that Contra 4 lives up to that, if not even surpassing it.Having come straight from playing the excellent Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on PS 3, it was a real kick to the groin when I died in one hit in this game, no Force powers to save my behind here. Contra 4 is hard as nails, even in easy mode, but that’s the way Contra games are..Now for the short review:Graphics: 7/10 It’s not the best looking DS game ever, but it’s more than good enough, seeing this game is a side-scroller, just like the Super Mario games of old are.Sound/music: 8/10 Good sound effects, and a nice soundtrack that does this game justice.Gameplay: 7/10 The game is fun to play, but I do think it’s to hard, even on easy mode, so they should have been a bit more easy going on that mode.Overall: 7/10 This game is a classic, and deserves to be in any serious DS game owners library. The only downside with this game is that there’s no option to save you progress, wich I think they could have added, since the game is so hard, and it’s no fun starting from level 1 every time you want to play…Other than that, I would real.

I purchased this game like two moths ago and have played it non-stop. Good graphics, good music. Tight play control and is pretty easy to learn for first time contra players. I love how they used sound effects from the earlier games. You can also carry two weapons like alien wars and power up your weapons by picking up the same weapon twice just like the arcade version of super contra. Both Ds screens are used to give you a much larger view of the action. You also have a grappling hook that allows you to get up to hard to reach places and avoid getting hit at times. The game is very hard, but that’s what fans of the series like myself expect. I’ve never used any codes to beat a contra game and never will. You have the ability to discard a power up and try out another one quickly or give it to another player. You can pick four different characters to play with. The game also has a lot of extra content to unlock, stuff such as the nes versions of contra, a listing of the history of the series and a challenge mode and you can even unlock different character sprites from other contra games to name a few. I’ve found so far that I really enjoy playing the challenge modes very much. The 3d over the shoulder stages from the first game are back which I loved and you can of course play this game two players as well. The game doesn’t use the stylus or the mic which is a big plus to me as I feel many games have tried to shoe horn those features in when they weren’t needed or played better.

Playing this game the other day was like having a time machine that allowed me to travel my blissful and effervescent past. Love this game to death!
